Why do I find myself wanting to start this up again!!
ok anyway I have been away for a while, since just after 5 edition was launched (got the rulebook funnily enough)
Now here is the problem, I have no idea which army to collect, I have alot of income now than when I originally done it, but less time to paint and model!
I know that the Dark Eldar recently had an update to their codex, but not sure about anything else that might of changed, was considering going with the eldar.. simpley as I like the Forge World avatar model but I am clueless as to whats what!
My friend who is also getting back into it, is doing some new arrmy list on the Forge world website, sometihing to do with orks, and lots of dreads, and even a mega dread?!

Edited by: Malaclypse Muscaria on 17/11/2010 05:21:50 I just started today to collect the new Dark Eldar, simply because they look so damn cool (can't say anything about how they play - aside from being based on speed - and don't really intend to play them anyway, as I don't know anyone anymore around here who's into WH40K).
I was chatting for a bit with the guy at the store, and he told me he had been to Game Workshop's HQ for some course or somesuch, where he saw how is the production process of miniatures done these days:
According to him, they don't hand-sculp their designs anymore, as it used to be some years ago, but they model it all on a 3D program (Maya or 3D Studio), along with some custom software that makes sure all the inter-exchangeable components for the plastic models fit well with each other in whatever combination, as well as fitting them into the plastic matrices that will be produced. Then the computer automatically sculps with diamond-head tools the steel planks that will serve as casts, which will be injected with liquid plastic on the assembly line.
This accounts for the sophistication, flexibility and fine detail in the multi-component plastic models they produce nowadays. I collected Dark Eldars when they first came up in the late '90s, and indeed the new designs are on a whole new level compared to the old ones.

For a second there.... I thought i was looking at a Necron Space Marine. That might be tough enough to warrant a 1+ armor save. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

What kind of play style do you prefer? I mean like Offense or Defense? Speed, numbers, or tank? Area damage or accuracy?

I can attest to this.
In a recent Apoc game, a squad of Death company charged a Green Tide (basically, a squad of 100+ orks. Yes, a single squad).
They managed to kill a quarter of them each turn, and only suffered a few back. Damn those guys are nuts.

Style of play? well kind of use to be a bit of a power player with a chaos demon prince, but really want to move away from that..
I do like the idea of something looking good on the table, so drawn towards a force that has either numbers, bulk, or Titans
I use to be no good with a speed army to be honest, I did try using some white scars, and just got slaughtered..
My main cause for concern at the moment, is beating my mate collecting this Dread heavy ork army, heavy punching would be very nice of course, eldar stand out with the lances, but then there is Tau, but I do want some close combat abilities!
I really would prefer to steer away from any Chaos God influenced army, like Dark Eldar, or Chaos Marines etc, Necron to be are just boring.
I want an army I can build up characters from and perhaps write some short stories with, which leans me heavily towards Imperial, Guard, which again have good tanks, and warhound and reaver titans, but would take me forever to paint the mass of infantry!!
Anyway at work, so best leave it there for now, will check replies when I can!!

Just remember - you can never have enough tanks.

Personal fan of the space wolves here. they be nasty in everything they do due to being viking/werewolf/superhumans. 'nids usded to be fun too with the carnifexes but I don't know how they work with their latest version.

If you want High Octane Nightmare Fuel, Warhammer 40,000 is the place to get it.
And as a side note, they're not chicks with guns. They're battle nuns with automatic (small) rocket launchers wearing armour made from the same stuff as battle tanks.

I don't have the time or patcience to collect full 40k armies, so I've taken refuge in Necromunda and other skirmish games. I'm forgeworlds ***** though; my wallet is already weeping in the corner seeing the new space marine releases, I've always wanted to make an Iron Hands army.

When I played I had an arse load of rhino tanks that never got used so I got a load of bits and bobs, welded it all together and turned them into light tanks. They kinda looked like beefy scimtar light tanks.
stick them in 4 squadrons of 3 lights with one heavy battle tank and combine them with 2 basilisks and you will **** face.

I occasionally get 40k nostalgia that DOW is increasingly not fixing. A quick look at the costs of setting up a new army, rules-books and army codex tho soon brings me round. Plus all my mothballed models are massively out of date.

Why not? I mean with the latest rules you have the pathmakers. No, not pathfinders, path makers; the only scout squad to bear more heavy weapons than the front line squads (which is zilch), ability to call in air strikes, and they get their own tank. Scouts wish they were space marines. Space marines wish they were pathmakers.

oook, well its look more and more like its going to be the new dark eldar..
If only they did some kind of Dark eldar Titan, then it would be all good, also I really not keen on the shape or style of their vehicles!!
Sucks...
guess it will be an all infantry army... so many models

DE rely on speed and mobility to make their army effective and removing their vehicles would seriously hurt your chances of winning. If you want more troops over vehicles I would suggest Orcs or IG. Orcs have stronger foot soldiers who can take a beating and IG can soak up the damage with numbers.
Does anyone know whatever became of the Inquisition? Did they ever continue with that group or scrap it in the new rules?

I've been wondering the same thing Ts'ao, after an absence from the game of 20 years. I've just started collecting a vampire counts army from ebay and mantic. For 40k, I think I'm going to go for Imperial Guard, simply because those huge tanks look so awesome.
