Edited by: Lord Wamphyri on 17/11/2010 17:38:39 Ok, so a lot of us have now had a play with the prototype of the new character creator on SISI.
But I'm curious - when you design your avatar, what is your motivation for making it look the way it does?
The way I see it, most people will fall into one of these categories;
- An Avatar that resembles yourself in RL
- An Avatar that resembles an ideal vision of yourself in RL
- An Avatar that resembles a celebrity
- An Avatar that embodies the characteristics of your in game persona
- An Avatar that is the embodiment of an ideal lust object, that you would drag to bed if it existed in RL
- A combination of some of the above
So.. which is yours? And have I missed any?

As long as it doesn't make my eye's bleed I really don't care all that much.
Although now that I look at it, my avatar looks like he has an ego. I guess that matches me in some way.

My main has a mohawk and a face full of spikes and tattoos, because i wanted to be a space pirate when i made him 6 years ago.
Then i logged in to find roughly 80% of players are pirates, and began running missions to be a rebel.

Now that I think about it I hate having a sense of ego. It doesn't bother me when other people have them or let it show in public, but when I feel the smallest amount of ardor to brag about something I just don't. Or if I somehow see things that I'm better at than some people I try to think of ways to "equal it out".
I don't know why, I guess is a psychological thing, but anyways, this makes me create characters that do not look like they are wealthy/important or choose factions that have a "glorious" or strong background like the Amarr or the Gallente. You can tell why I chose Minmatar. :B

For my main (this guy): 6. (1 and 4)
For alts: 1, 4 or 5.
Will be fun to see how close I can get to 1. Got reasonably close once, will have to try again once the char creator works better.

An Avatar that resembles yourself in RL ? Depends on game, but not really... very seldom. An Avatar that resembles an ideal vision of yourself in RL ? Never tried. An Avatar that resembles a celebrity ? Never. I'd rather pick one of the two above instead. An Avatar that embodies the characteristics of your in game persona ? A bit of that, sure, but more as an afterthought. An Avatar that is the embodiment of an ideal lust object, that you would drag to bed if it existed in RL ? Occasionally. But that doesn't exactly say much, since I'm not very picky about that sort of thing. A combination of some of the above ? Usually I just tweak and tweak until I'm happy with the result, with none of the above goals as a mandatory set parameter, but more as a general initial guideline.
So basically, something like this... * cycle the default templates (if they exist) and see if any of them seems appealing, if not, start from scratch based on some face I have in memory, but only as vague starting point (strange as it sounds, I would have serious troubles trying to sculpt my face, I would need to constantly look in a mirror, I have a very poor memory of my own face in spite of seeing it daily in the mirror) * tweak the face to partially reflect whatever personality I think I might want to play it as, but don't go too wild in any particular direction (unless I am absolutely certain of the gameplay style choice to be final and the looks are somewhat relevant) * the finishing touches should be there to make the character more "appealing", so depending on gender, either handsome/rugged or beautiful/nice (again, unless on the previous step the exact opposite would have been the goal)
In the end, you get a look that doesn't really resemble anybody you might have ever seen before TOO much (maybe a little), and preferably also not unrealistically perfect either (can become boring fast).

It'd be nice to play the game a bit before making your avatar, as making the avatar is something you do before you even get into station docking bay, never mind in space
I made my character with visions of owning a mega-corporation and making loads of money and being rich and powerful, and so tried to reflect that with my avatar. I also gave myself really high Charisma :P
My in-game persona has changed, and ended up nothing like the one I had vague intentions of when I made the avatar
That's why the new avatar creation should be really interesting as people already have an idea of who their in-game persona is when they make the new ones
Whilst on the one hand, avatars tend to be so small in-game most of the time, that when you look at the full size avatar pictures of people you thought you knew, you find they look quite different to the little thumb in local or ally chat (which is kinda off-putting sometimes)
However, I was really pleased that my character looked nothing like the other deteis clones, and I've maybe only once seen an avatar that even vaguely resembled mine
It is going to take a lot of Sisi practice to get that same effect next time, and with the current avatars, the struggle always seemed to be how to make my chars look older than the base age of mid-twenty's.
Also spending a lot of time playing with the slider bars set to the extremes helps give an idea what the range of looks available are. I seem to remember setting everything to the max, then toning things down to make a more subtle effect

Well ... over all the MMO's I've played ... I have a substantial number of characters.
An Avatar that resembles yourself in RL: If I'm picking a character to represent myself - then I make some effort to make it resemble me in some way ... but ... that's only going to succeed so well given the tools at hand. That - and that resemblance can be minute, abstract or expedient. For example - I do not look like an Asian/Indian with a mohawk and face paint - but - there is a connection, though a minor one between myself and the avatar I'm posting with.
An Avatar that resembles an ideal vision of yourself in RL: Now here - I tend to pick an appearance that is somewhat younger than I am now.
An Avatar that resembles a celebrity: I have on occasion gotten inspiration for some of my characters from TV Shows or Movies I've watched ... but again ... you're only going to get results within a certain range here ... i.e. - no one is going to look at one of my characters and go "Oh! It's xxxyyyzzz!"
An Avatar that embodies the characteristics of your in game persona: I don't really have an in game persona. Just some characters I play more often than others. Actually trying to maintain a persona and differentiate them between my characters ... is just to much work. I think ... that people who are into role playing ... probably have fewer characters. Just a guess. When I developed some of my first characters for EVE I had a little bit of a back story for them ... but after a while ... I just didn't bother and now believe that some of the choices I made in connection with that back story were a mistake.
An Avatar that is the embodiment of an ideal lust object, that you would drag to bed if it existed in RL: Yeah - I've got lots of those. I don't use these characters to represent me. I think of most of my characters as being Employees - these are just my really good looking employees. Mostly though ... it's just to have something pretty to look at on the screen.
One other thing I've done in character selection - was to try and have a mix of characters from the games different factions and sub groups. I don't have them all but I do have some from each faction.

I usually work exactly the opposite of what you describe. I get an idea about my character while making my avatar or while browsing through available portraits. I never know what I'll end up playing until I see what is actually available for me. I always start by quickly going through the basic options for all races and genders, and see if anything attracts my eye or gives me inspiration.
For example I've chosen the portrait in the link for my current playthrough of a few different NWN/NWN2 player made campaigns. That one picture is enough for me to build an initial concept of the character in my mind. I know the race, class, alignment, personality and general background from just looking that picture for a moment. Then I just start building on top of those initial ideas and make them detailed enough for me to get interested in actually playing with her and seeing how the world reacts to my mischievous and deadly halfling shadowdancer.
I'm going to do this again with the new character creator, so my characters won't remain the same and it is propably refreshing to go in a new direction with them. DSQ will be the only character I actually try to replicate in some fashion as she is now. At least in the mood if not in exact looks. That grumpy and disapproving look has grown on me and it fits the mostly trollish and critical posting I do with her.

With SL, it was someplace between 1 & 2 (could have been exact to myself, if I paid for the guys who take photos of your face and generate the head skin for you).
With Eve, it was 4. Simply b/c I had no interest in heading toward RL, since it was unlikely anyway.
I've considered trying that once the new creator is polished, but I have to admit that this pic has grown on me too.

Well, there is the Jin-Mei of Gallente so I guess CCP acknowledges that Asians do exist sans the Brownies. If anything, CCP acknowledges that African Americans can't fly spacecrafts. Hello? Jorde La'Forge.
I chose #5 though I'm asian in RL too
