So I've heard that sometimes players in capital ships will use smartbombs to blow up incoming torpedoes. I tried testing this vs incursion sansha rats with a disco scorpion, and it did not seem to blow up any torpedoes. Am I doing this wrong or are they not smartbomb-able after all?

torps can easily be smartbombed, our enemies on tq try to make a "wall of smartbombs" to counter our drake gangs lol. works semi ok.. but ussly don't kill the missiles before they hit unless u have alot of damage at the same time.

There's a dev blog on weapon grouping that covers this (third and second paragraph from the bottom). Assuming it's still correct then SBs will work on all missiles except citadels, but I guess it's possible (although highly unlikely) that sansha is a special case. Anyway, I can confirm that SBs works just fine on normal missiles (I've got one on my mission boat).

Idea with a smart bomb is that as a missile is actually an object in space with hp's and such (which also cause a certain amount of lag) it can be smart bombed to death but as far as I know only BS sized smarts have enough firepower to destroy the missile before it hits. As to those new NPC-Sanshas it's entirely possible that they use turret tracking formula (the one being changed for fighter bombers) with missile graphics to cut down some of the server load, in that case smarts won't obviously work at all.

That's my theory too. Furthermore, I could see the possibility of regular missiles eventually be converted to this method as well.
If we loose the ability to use Smartbombs to shoot down missiles & torpedoes, that will make them even more unbalanced IMHO. As it is, Missiles are by far the most reliable weapon system you can use on your ship (hence why the Drake is so damn popular). Even though not a lot of people use SB's as Missile Defense, it still has been a tactic ever since I can remember. In many instances, it's far easier to use Smartbombs as missile defense instead of Defender missiles (when's the last time you or a friend has actually used Defender missiles in an engagement?).
