hi cat here
I'm with Virgin Media, have been for a while, but the last few months have been nothing but trouble for me. They've ****ed up direct debit dates, causing inconvenience, and then they denied the conversation where I specified dates ever happened in the first place.
I had an o/due reminder a couple weeks ago, so I paid up. They've been restricting my service last week or so, so I gave em a call. Records not updated or some crap, but they've promised to update my service within the next 24 hours.
As I was speaking to "Kevin" on the phone (someone with his accent surely is not called Kevin?) I wanted them to make a note of my discontent. I do this all the time at work, if a customer is particuarly PO'd, a note goes against the account. Pretty much policy, if someone else picks up the account for whatever reason, they know what to expect.
Kevin informed me "we cannot make note like that sir I am terrible sorry you must inform head office I can give you address to post letter."
So, Virgin are terrible (I have thought this for a long time, but been kinda comfy with my connection til recently) and won't take complaints unless they're in a stamped addressed envelope to their head office. I told them I am strongly considering changing supplier, but I "must put this in my complaint".
Can anyone recommend a non-Virgin UK supplier? I'm so PO'd with them right now I could write a strongly worded letter, sent recorded delivery, I'm just that mad.
x

Virgin Media are indeed awful, I've heard that BT are better than Virgin but to what degree I can't say.
And going by the names of wireless networks around my house I'd say that BT either have good service or are just good at luring in customers.

Check if Be provides a service in your area, they are ADSL 2+, and are excellent. If not, I always hear good things about Zen.

Be are pretty good, but tbh I would avoid calling call centres they all suck.
E-mail ftw, I really hate "press 1 to be disconnected or press 2 to be put on hold"

This.
I had a nightmare with AOHELL for a while, moved over to BT, who were totally useless, then finally settled on BE Broadband.
Outstanding customer service, and their packages are awesome. Plus, if you want to now, you can ditch BT all together as they offer landline rental packages.
I don't think I'll ever switch from BE, tbh.
Only ever had a couple of downtimes with them, and they were scheduled maintenance in the middle of the night, and BE actually emailed me 48 hours in advance to let me know my exchange would be going offline for repairs.
I live 1.4km from my exchange :

I pay ú32 per month, ú24 for the broadband and the rest for line rental.
There's no download limit, (although there is a fair use policy which I've never breached despite downloading 600+ GB from Steam) and they don't throttle your internet connection at peak times.
I'm on BE Unlimited, which is slated as 24meg DSL. However, if you disconnect the ring tie pair from your phone socket (something BE actually RECOMMEND that you do), you can increase your bandwidth quite heavily if you have a good line, by reducing noise levels.
They give you the option of having 24mb download and 1.5mb upload, or restricting your download to 2mb and shunting the bandwidth to give you 2.5mb upload if you do a lot of (obviously legal) file sharing.
It depends entirely on where in the country you are as to your performance of course, and the quality of your phone line and the age of the copper in it.

Sold. I will look into them tommorrow, I'm in an urban area so shouldn't be a problem in theory. I don't have a landline at the moment, my only connection to the outside world is the cable, that may be an issue.
I think the final straw with Virgin for me is telling me to "put it in a letter", tbh thats the ultimate insult. "You have a problem with us? Yeah, well put it in writing to our head office." I was so furious, but I didn't take it out on the Indian call centre person I spoke to. They clearly have a different customer service model to the one I adhere to. Sure, I refer stuff, but if a customer is sufficiently annoyed, we try and deal with them that day - and not anger them further by telling them to put it in writing. I work for one of the largest companies in the world in their field, by the way.
x
e: replaced "that field" with "their field", I don't work in telcoms. An important distinction.

I've always enjoyed pretty painless internet with BT at home (village's only provider until like 09') however think yourself lucky.. i go to the university of hull.
Humberside has ONE service provider, the phoneboxes are cream and the internet is damn awful! Some ridiculous contract until 2025.
Anyway if you thought virgin were bad, try KC.

I'm with Be, due to my landline not being the best I'm on their ú17.99 package (+ BT line rental). On this package with regular speed checks I am receiving 9000kbps. Once BT get round to upgrading my line I will be moving up a level in broadband speed, but that is BT's job so most likely next decade.
Also unlimited downloads, fair usage policy is just that if your usage is causing other customers on the same exchange to have ****ty connections they will email you.
For customer support they have and IRC channel to speak to a technician directly rather than a call centre where the individual knows jack poop about computers.
Go for Be Unlimited.

I was with virgin for years at my parents' place with zero issues. Because of this I signed up with them when I got my own place. Unfortunately I could only get dsl there... Upshot is: if you're on their cable service I'd stay put (faster and In my experience more reliable connection than any dsl provider) - if it's dsl then I would recommend following the advice in the posts above. If you are on cable consider the extra expense of having a bt line installed/activated (necessary for any dsl installation)- this can cost upwards of ú150! Oh, and as far as I'm aware virgin will only throttle you if you breach their contract (using torrents excessively for example) - other ISPs will do the same. ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

I use virgin 20Mbit. It was better when it was just Telewest. I only have 20mbit as the capping feature kicks in at around 3GB download usage rather than 1.5GB. Not that I download much. But the capping nerfs connectivity in Supreme Commander FA 8 player games.

I moved to the 50Mb which has no cap, iirc it was about ú7/8 more a month more. They'll be rolling out 100Mb soon.

We chucked Virgin a few years back as they couldn't actually manage to keep us connected. Let alone any debate about D/L speeds.
Currently on Sky as a TV/Internet deal and although the speed is well under the max for the package, at least it's actually there 99.99% of the time. (And most of the speed issues are down to the antiquated BT line it comes down.) We get a couple of dropouts in a bad a week, usually only a few seconds (enough to kick you off EvE but let you log back on straight away)

Ordinarily its about ú120 for a BT phone line installation. But when I got O2 ADSL broadband in another house the BT phone installation was free.
I was very satisfied with O2 broadband. It was cheap at ú12 a month. Or ú7.50 a month if you keep at least ú10 of phone credit on a pay as you go O2 mobile SIM. The customer service for O2 was excellent. Only downside was a naff rebadged router. But you get these cheapo ones thrown in by every broadband provider.

Yeah, Virgin can be so crappola at times, ive considered leaving them in the past but im stuck with them for the immediate future. Not because of contracts or any such rubbish but the phone lines into this estate are from the 50's and the exchange is too far away for me to get any more than 1.8mb outside of peak times running to 0.6 at peak (BT themselves told me this). With 4 computers and an x-box running in the house 0.6mb would make life impossible for all of us. We currently pay for a 20mb line and get that or near that most of the time. We dont DL much and dont DL anything illegal so we dont get capped. Our isp contention rate is low because of that too.
I feel your pain Cat, but make sure that you contact BT before any other providers and let them test the line and tell you how much you can get peak and non peak times. No other providers can beat what BT tell you as BT own the lines. Other providers might offer better contention rates, cheaper rates, unlimited this, that and the other etc but they cant offer faster speeds than BT can provide through the lines. Good luck

Well there is slight of hand by what ADSL ISP's advertise as the bandwith you will get. Its law that BT has to resell ADSL broadband to other ISP's. What these other ISP's often do is to advertise a faster broadband speed but what you get is a higher contention ratio. That is say SuperMega ISP offers 24mbit with a contention ratio of 40:1 against say 30:1 for BT.
But I would recommend O2.
