I have a nice computer to play eve but now am challenged to build a low cost 2ndary box to play and was wondering how to get the most bang for the buck with the empahsis on cheapness. Does eve rely more on processor or graphics card. Cost is important because i am broke and I don't trust my criminal roomates stealing this box. So if you suggest something more expensive justify it. I hope to be able to do lvl 4 missions, 0.0 ratting and light pvp. As of right now I am thinking about: Pentium dual Core proc XP op sys 2gig Ram nvidia 8400 or ati 4550
Input appreciated, as if i were to spend more money would it be better to go w/ a core 2 duo (stick w/ intel as I have a mobo that supports the pent dual cores thru core 2 quad not that the quad is in the price range talked about)or beef up on graphics?

I cant stress enough that I am not looking for i3 or phenom procs, not looking for $100 graphics cards as there is a good chance that box would be stolen and I am broke

Will work not brill but will work.
no it only uses 1 core GFX you can get away with 6800 [even next years updates]

Any old single core mid-range P4 or early C2Ds (OR their AMD equivalents) is fine. For GPU, work on Nvidia 7300GT (or ATI equivalent) and above.
The Nvidia 8 and 9 series are a bit overkill imo if you're looking for dirt cheap.

I have the mobo and case all ready. So the 6800 will survive even next years updates? is this update info posted? lock cable will be used but short of building a steel box to house the unit it will not be safe. thanks tho!!!! |

If you want bang for the buck, AMD instead of Intel.

Something in here does not compute properly or sounds at least a bit fishy.
Why do you need a second machine and not just add a second monitor to the first machine and... well, there you go, it doesn't get any cheaper than that for "multiboxing" (software style). Also, why would your roommates stealing the SECOND box be a problem, but not the first one ? Or what's the deal with all of that ?
...
Getting 1 FPS at lowest possible graphic details would still suffice to borderline accomplish all your requirements (since client-server comms are on a "once per second" update cycle anyway). From that standpoint, even a cheapo integrated video card (as long as it has Shader Model 3 support) should be enough for a couple of years. Heck, just buy the cheapest dirt-cheap second hand machine you can find with a PCI-Express mobo (if you're lucky, you'll get it for under 100$) then if it doesn't have at least a 6-series GeForce or similar Radeon, then dump the CHEAPEST new PCI-Express video card you can buy (don't think you can even find any below 7-series for sale nowadays) in it and call it a day.

To run EVE you need Shader Model 3. The 6 and 7 series nVidia cards support this, from ATI you would need X1300 and later card. These cards cost 15 to 30 dollars, 8400GS usually 25-30 dollars.
8400GS support Shader Model 4. I think 8400GS would be better buy.

I really did not think the why of this was important. But since you asked I have my "nice" computer elsewhere, safe not as accesible.
I dont really think 1fps is playable for other than hanging skills

you can find a case with a Kingston lock and just lock the monitor and case to the most solid thing in your room, and protect your harddrive with truecrypt. gotta lock that thing down like the pentagon.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card,2362-6.html The 4350 is better than 8400GS. But the really hilarious part is that older HD 36xx beats the HD 4350.
From a little bit of reading, apparently HD 4350 is HTPC card, something about on board audio chip for HDMI.
