Hi All!
I need some help. I have over 4 million Skill Points in Gunnery, and Ive asked tons of other people, but I cant figure out why the damage I deal is so pathetic
Usually 30-80 and if I'm lucky 100-140, but thats super Rare.
My Gunnery skills are: Controlled Bursts LVL 5 Gunnery lvl 5 Large Hybrid Turret LVL 5 Medium Blaster and Railgun Specialization LVL 3 Small Blaster and Railgun Specialization LVL 4 Trajectory Analysis LVL 3 on its way to LVL 4 Surgical Strike lvl 4 Motion Prediction LVL 4 Rapid Firing LVL 5 Sharpshooter lvl 5 Weapon Upgrades lvl 5
Now I cannot fathom why Im not doing over 100 damage... Its really making me angry. IF someone can help me please, Id appreciate it, I can put in my limited API if needed.

The ship, fit and target all matter as much as your skills.
Without those included we can't help you too much.

According to your fit you've got 0 damage mods (magnetic field stabilizers), you are using a low damage ammo type and t1 meta 0 guns.
Getting better guns, 350mm prototype gauss gun, for example would help.
Adding a damage mod like say a magnetic field stabilizer 1 would help.
Using higher damage ammo would help too like say anti-matter. You could also try caldari navy iridium ammo if you really wanted to stay with iridium ammo.

Are you talking about DPS (damage per second) or just damage (as in damage per shot)? Are you talking about 100 damage (or dps?) per turret or are you talking about all turrets grouped?
Seeing your fit I assume you're talking about damage per shot per turret, and lets just say that you'll never reach that with your current fit.
Why are you using T1 guns when you can easily train Large Railgun Specialization and use T2 instead?

STOP training large hybrids!!!!!!
Blasters/Rails are made of fail these days.
Cross-train Amarr or Minmatar and enjoy. [Choice depends on environment]

Try 3 hardeners. 2 of the higher damage, 1 of the lower you will be receiving.
1 large armor repairer.
2 magnetic field stabs
Mids:
1 tracking computer 1 100mn afterburner or cap recharger depending 3 cap rechargers
high slots
8x 350mm railguns (use at least meta 3 guns.) improve drone electronic warfare for drone range.
Rigs are fine as you have them.

The Hyperion just isn't a great mission ship. The Megathron beats it out as a gun ship and the Dominix easily beats the Mega as a mission runner.
But if you have your heart set on it, I whipped this thing together for someone else who was asking a similar question:
[Hyperion, don't do this] Large 'Accommodation' Vestment Reconstructer I Armor Thermic Hardener II Armor Kinetic Hardener II Reactor Control Unit II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Heavy Capacitor Booster II, Cap Booster 800 LiF Fueled I Booster Rockets Tracking Computer II, Optimal Range Tracking Computer II, Tracking Speed Cap Recharger II

Large Auxiliary Nano Pump I Large Auxiliary Nano Pump I Large Auxiliary Nano Pump I
Hobgoblin II x5 Garde II x3
Swap hardeners as needed. Garde IIs are highly recommended for supplemental DPS. Carry two of each script for the TCs so you can adapt to any situation.
As far as skills go, pushing Gal BS to 5 is a good move; that will help your damage output somewhat. As for the gunnery tree proper, definitely get WU to 5 and AWU to at least 4; you'd be amazed how much that improves the fits available to you.

To put it mildly you don't have good gunnery skills, you're only half way there. Mastering one gunnery weapon system takes about 16mil in SP whnen all V for a single weapon system, though not many will train specializations to V obviously (especially for hybrids as they currently are).

Also, if you are set on using railguns, and specially large railguns, and even more so using large railguns on the smaller-than-Battleship-sized mobs that you get in practically 100% of the missions out there, do train Motion Prediction V. It's just around a week.
If I were you, I would:
1) Not use the Hyperion for missions, and instead get me a Megathron with its tasty tracking bonus. 2) Train Large railgun specialization IV now, and use T2 guns. The difference is huge, and you already finished the long prerequisite. 3) Train Motion Prediction V, and then Surgical strike V.
I think these steps would increase your damage quite a bit.

Well, I would say you need to look a a few other factors. Your gunnery skills are fine but you are not using any damage modifiers (weapons upgrades or rigs), also, are you using the correct ammo against the right ships? As a general rule, try to use EM against shield tanked ships and explosive against armour tanked.
Are you aware of how tracking, optimal and fall-off ranges (which you can always check via the tactical overlay) and transversals and your opponent's signature radius all affect the damage you do?
I hope this helps.

Yah, My main has over 7 mil in gunnery and I still don't have 1 gun to lvl V. Guns are just getting started at 3 to 4 mil SP.
As mentioned earlier, put some Mag Stabs on there for DPS. A tracking mod will help with small stuff. If your missioning try fitting smaller guns in 2 slots. Hybrids in general suck for missions btw.
Also, you have 2 nano rigs but no repper. MAKE UP YOUR MIND !

Edited by: Narisa Bithon on 30/11/2010 01:10:15 the hyperion sucks as a rail boat - it lacks the tracking bonus
either use a megathron instead
or use a dominix for missions

Put a magstab2 and tracking enhancer 2 in the lows, use the 350 protype guns and your damage should jump considerably.
Consider antimatter ammo and a closer range, irid lets you stay further back but gimps your damage by 20% or so compared to anti.

4 million is nothing..guns need max skills and implants to compete with missiles. And put more damage mods on there.
I have 13 million all in hybrids and secondary gun skills.Id say I started liking them around 10 million.
And omg lose the 350 and put some 425mms on there lol.Advanced weapon upgrades helps a lot,as does a 5% pg implant.Slot 6 squire pg8 I think it is.
