A lot of people often ask when will incarna come out. But isnt the most important question: "What will be included in incarna?".
I know that they said there will be bars and minigames and stuff like that, so dont misunderstand me. I just cant believe that this will be all. They are working on this for more than 4 years and when i saw the CCP team constellation and how many teams are working on icnarna, then i have to look at other full games like Oblivion, Gothic and so on which have content that is 100times (not 2 times, not 10 times, not even 20 times but 100!!! times) more than what CCP has already announced about incarna.
So what can we expect? Missions on planets (no i dont speak about dust here)? Combat on space stations with lasers and a full new skill tree? NPCs on stations with a real life behaviour? Huge corridors and docks where we can see the ships undocking and docking in? Really, i am curious about the final content that will be in incarna. Simply because if they really worked hard on incarna for such a long time, there must be already the content of a full game in it. If its just only some stupid minibars, a poker card game and a chess game in a nice looking room, then WTF have they done all the time?

They are good questions, I haven't thought about asking any about whats in incarna because I'm just desperate to stretch my legs from that pod. Seriously yes what is in incarna? Its either more massive than CCP let on (I so hope they are just teasing us) or it looks pretty with very limited content.. which will be still very welcomed, naturally, but longevity wise it could end up (at least in my case) like planet interaction, played with it for a week - got bored during it, haven't touched it again even to pickup what resources are probably waiting there :S
I'll be playing EVE still even if it is lacking content and they'll improve it eventually.... hopefully I don't have to wait many extra years to see what it could be = Fallout 3 in space (with that 'Mount & Blade' feeling of boarding an enemy ship or station ..oh please :) But if they don't have the ambition for that? .. I can't believe they'd stick to just clothing stores, poker games and the like. I think they have many a great idea they just need the man power to implement ... but I hope they haven't over extended themselves on other projects. --------------------------------------------- Francis Wolcott: "I am a sinner that does not expect forgiveness. I sincerely hope the content is live content. EvE would be so much better if we could sit in as avatars during some of the historical events in the chronicle. Especially if players could directly interact with the "Actors" to actually change the storyline.

I'm depressed about Incarna, because it really is cool tech looking for a reason to exist.
The best they're really going to be able to do is either make very pretty social hubs (which will be nice but probably empty) or just a new place to stick agents.

Would someone please be kind enough to point me to the thread/dev blog where CCP officially state that they have had a team working on Incarna for four solid years? Whats that I hear you say? You can't? Oh thats right, you can't show me that because CCP have never actually said they had a single team dedicated to Incarna for that entire period.
So hang on, that would also mean that there doesn't have to be 4 years worth of features yet!! Maybe thats why they haven't made any solid announcements as to the content of Incarna.....

Edited by: Feilamya on 27/11/2010 14:33:46 Short answer: It doesn't exist.
If CCP had done any content for Incarna (except for some concept art, slides ans videos), then we would have seen it on sisi on day one of the new character creation system.
What we did see was tons of "WIP" textures, bloodlines that all look the same (except for their default shapes and skin colors, for which there is no slider any more) and immature technology (skin intersecting with clothes, limbs and hair intersecting with each other and the rest of the body, ...) and bugs (just to point out that by "immature technology" I don't mean just "bugs").
Your homework for today will be to figure out why Incursion has not been released in November and what happened to the remaining Incarna content which was not even scheduled for Incursion.

You, dear OP, will have to decide what to do with all that shiny new sand. Like you had to decide what to do with those shiny new planets a few patches ago or all those shiny new ships introduced over the years. Now you got shiny new stations to do stuff with. What stuff, you decide. Have fun! - Don't let the trolls stop you from giving a helpful reply. :) |

This expansion is a framework for the future. FPS combat IN EVE, with station takeover (shooting will destroy them), ship takeovers (team vs team combat in supercapitals, planet takeover with console guys, and so on.
Impossible to do this all in a half year expansion so they are putting in avatar framework first, then working on combat goodies in future updates. Will take a few years to reap all the rewards of avatars....
Going to add a whole slew of new skills with soldier weaponry and boarding ships lol.

Then maybe Caldari should be buffed then in one way or another, rather than relying on the most stupidly overpowered bull**** in this game. The reason why there is so many super capitals is because they cannot be jammed. ask any super capital pilot why they got them and half will say because of ecm.

Hold the phone we have a buff Caldari opinion, someone space him quick!
Seriously though, both fleets have the option to use ECM - if one fleet utilized it better than the other and won; perhaps the losing side needs to see where they went wrong and learn from it rather than cry Nerf all the time.
Plus, don't quote me or anything, but aren't there some of those handy Anti-ECM modules lying around?
Both sides have ECM so it's not "just" you being jammed; it's just another tactic in war; and as we all know, all's fair in love and war

So you'd use the same argument for USA to decommission all its Nukes but leave Russia with all of theirs because Nukes are overpowered? (lets face it they are lol)
Next you'll tell me Logistics should be thrown out of the game because repping a persons armour or shield is completely unfair to the guy shooting at it...
ECM isn't overpowered (after all you have that huge ship of yours that's IMMUNE to electronic warfare...) you just need better tactics to deal with it.
I believe the Eve mantra is "adapt or die" either adapt to it or die from it, but don't call nerf when you get killed by it because you didn't field your own ECM on some high morality crap.

Want some overused meme with your otherwise bland and stupid posting to try and make sure self look cool and derail the fact that ECM is overpowered because you know it is and use it all the time?
My point still stands. ECM is overpowered. "Get your own overpowered ECM then" is not a valid response, and just shows how overpowered and bland ECM really is if the best counter to something completely game breakingly overpowered is just to use it yourself.

You've hit the fundamental problem that CCP have been grappling with for these 4 years.
Coming up with the technology to achieve Incarna is the easy bit - they've had prototypes built and improved upon for ages. Their problem is they cannot decide on what Incarna actually should be from a gameplay perspective.
They are caught between two polar opinions: - people who like spaceships only, and don't want to have to do any walking around to get any gameplay content, who fear the kind of fundamental changes in the game that Incarna may represent, - and those people who love walking around and want Incarna to have some meaningful purpose other than pretty graphics, who think this is the only way for Eve to start to realise its potential as CCPs 'ultimate scifi sim'.
These two camps are idealogically opposed on a fundamental level - its probably not possible to please both.
So anyway, the last few years have been people in CCP coming up with ideas for what Incarna should be, but no firm decisions being made because they still basically aren't sure what they, and their players, actually want. ---- I belong to Silent Ninja (Hopefully that should cover it). |

I am betting Hello Kitty doesn't have a mechanic which promotes not being able to shoot eachother in a PvP game, and a not mechanic which encourages people to blob. Hello Kitty is probably more hardcore than eve right now with ECM still in the game.

It is very possible to combine those two extremes, hybridise them and even to fill up all the space between the extremes, so to speak. It's in the hands of CCP however. If they leave it empty, they will lose momentum. If they enforce things, theyeffectively alienate quite a lot of the scale.
But I wouldn't worry, it's clear that CCP have an awesome vision that will be totally epic and will have explosions, and lots of content, and stuff. It's gonna be awesome, you will see. They've had 4+ years to work out a grand vision, for both commercial filling and gameplay and expanding on the sandbox principles.

Is this seriously a thread complaining about the lack of information on content in an expansion that isn't due to release for at least another 6 months?
Does anybody else besides me find this rather stupid?
Lets worry about the currently releasing expansion and see what comes out in it before questioning the next one. It's like talking about the Playstation 5 when 4 hasn't come out yet.

Massive waste of time and a missed opportunity IMO.
Once incarna comes out, every expansion after that for years to come will be focused on WiS content and space content will get a backseat.

I used to play "Earth and Beyond" if anyone remembers that. I really enjoyed leaving my ship and wandering around the stations to perform my business. It added a sense of sci-fi "reality" if I may put it that way. I especially liked the spaceship naming feature, the spaceship customization (mostly just a paint job) and the abilty to wander around the hangar looking at my spaceship.
I see a dnager that EVE will be dumbed down and dragged off to the console marketplace in years to come - allowing the current PC based EVE I know and love to wither away. Has anyone seen a (very) long term committment to EVE on the PC platform fron CCP? Proud to be a CareBear |

Ain't gonna happen. Frankly Incarna is nothing more than CCP showing off their ****. They have this "Carbon" tech for character simulation that they want to show off. What better way to do that then by implementing it into EvE while at the same time pleasing a large number of players who wouldn't mind seeing their character out of pod.
As sad as it is a lot of people won't play this game because they cannot associate a ship to themselves like they can an actual character with body. My wife refused to play this game until she heard about Incarna. Now she can't wait.
Frankly the hardcore community in EvE really is the minority. Incarna isn't going to hurt EvE...it will grow the population. Make more money for CCP which creates more money for more people to be hired to create more stuff for better expansions.
Let it happen.

I'm looking forward to incarna. I hope that there is some content that is a game in of it's self. Sort of like mass effect where you could talk to npc's and go on quests, both legal and ilegal.
For us beginners, it will be great for when so called mercenaries/pvper decide to dec a carebear corp for so cheep and easy kills. In stead of being docked just watching my ship, i can sit in a bar with a pda checking my market orders or paying a card/board games with ppl.
Maybe there could be some combat in incarna because lets face it, dust is gonna fail.

Massive waste of time and a missed opportunity IMO.
Once incarna comes out, every expansion after that for years to come will be focused on WiS content and space content will get a backseat.
Incarna will usher in the steady decline of EVE.
Calling it here.
Walking in stations isn't going to keep new people subbed to the game.
That's very naive and short sighted.
Incarna will have to have ALOT more than just " Walking and socializing " to keep people around, new and old.
I'm telling you man...it's gonna be a flopper if they don't give it more than mini games and socializing.

How do you know it won't keep people subbed to the game? Hardly naive or shortsighted at all. In fact its looking at the bigger picture understanding that there are a lot of different types of people out there and some of them might come play EvE after Incarna releases where they wouldn't have played before.
What else do you expect from Incarna anyway? I am sure there will be more than just walking in stations. Maybe new ships or graphical upgrades...we don't know yet but why complain about what we don't know is going to be in it when its still months and months away? A lot can change.
Would landing on a planet and shooting other people be cool with Incarna? Yes...but we know it won't happen. Thats what DUST is for.

Incarna will be a major desaster, even worse than PI, if CCP is going to ignore all red flags which came up so far.
It is obvious that they need to sit down seriously and think.
What do we have so far (mind you, it is just a few month until summer with the summer expansion): Incarna maybe will have something with 'gambling' but it is not sure if that goes into the first expansion. That will be all, if we are lucky. Oh right, and avatars of unseen quality (hmm, really?), and microtransactions.
Not good enough, by far!
What should be done instead?
First: Major involvement of the interested playerbase. How? Let the CSM crowdsource desired gameplay for incarna, let them do a priority list with player votings specifically about Incarna functionality. And that needs to be done way BEFORE the internal gamedesign begins. If gamedesign started already, then it is already too late.
Second: Lots of public communication between devs/CSM/playerbase and lots of feedback from the devs about the CSM crowdsourcing.
Third: EXCELLENCY! Take your time until you have enough really GOOD and working functionality and only then release it - push it back to winter 2011 if necessary. Nothing is worse than a product people are waiting for since 5+ years, that is promoted hugely and which is then a major disappointment because it is so underwhelming.
My wishlist for Incarna? Lots and really lots of customizable things. And with customizable I don't mean that we just can chose something out of list and that's it. Instead a new level of customization which is unseen anywhere else - captain's quarters, bars, games etc.
But essentially: it needs to be EXCELLENT. And I agree with the op. A bar with a poker table is by far not good enough. Every free browser game has this already these days (more or less). That is not the level of quality I want to see in EVE. It needs to be BETTER. And you can do it CCP, I am sure of that - if you only focus hard enough on it and consult the players/CSM and take them serious.

After infiltrating CCP HQ I managed to work my way into Nathans office. There in the lofty room I found a lone PC with the username N. Richardsson. "Blast" I thought to myself "its Password protected". Knowing CCP and their almighty User account security, I knew I only had one shot at this. Slowly reaching towards they Keypad, sweat was dripping down my nostril as my index finger touched "B" next I daringly pressed "E" then "E" again and ending with "R". Now the moment of truth... "Enter"
*Beep* "Password accepted"
I was in, on the desktop there were folders such as "Top secret megadeathraykilldestroyingmachine", "Second Christmas gift-new learning skills" and the one I was most interested in, "Incarna". I rushed into the folder and found to my surprise the following information.

Even IF Incarna would only include: * characters * clothes * mini-games * customizable bars * offices (as were shown on the fanfest vid)
I'd already be happy. It would be nice to walk out of ship and meet your in-game friends as characters, not just ships with some vaguish 2D portrait. And I hope the characters will also have gestures, poses, expressions. The character options as used in Clear Skies vids would be perfect, perhaps CCP could take a look at that!
Next to that I hope the offices will have whiteboards that you can actually use, like guildwars has the option to write and draw on the minimap to explain tactical plans. It would make some more technical issues a lot easier to discuss.

I don't want Incarna to be an FPS
But I do want it to affect the wider game. And I do want to be able to risk things.
I want to be able to sabotage an opponent's ship (ie prevent it warping or redocking for x minutes after undocking). Failure might mean lower attibutes for a period of time.
I want to be able to hack into a rival's computer to see what's in their hangars or wallet. Since computers use direct neural interfaces, failure might mean skill loss akin to what happens when you lose your T3 ship.
These activities would require new skills, and of course more new skills would be needed to stop them happening.
Obviously, none of this will make it into the game, but at least Incarna will offer us the possibility of INTERNET WALKING, so it must be worthwhile.

I do hope there are FPS type activities, true freedom, in Incarna. It'll broaden the horizon and allow for a much richer and dynamic scene, especially when boarding ships becomes possible.
Obvioulsy being able to turn spaceship fighting into an fps is impossible, so this would be a way to garner a new crowd and also please the sci-fi players who want a bit of fps action in their MMORPG experience.

Optimal outcome: Incarna is good enough to add some more immersion for those currently playing EVE who want it, but empty enough that it doesn't bring the hordes of casuals that CCP wants, so development focus goes back to the main game. -

Since you just listed what they 'promised' (however long ago) that is about where our collective expectations start at and have to decline as they actually try to make that all happen.
I want/demand much more or it will be just a useless way to add more microtransactions to EVE, which means they just beef up that aspect of it which is still a nothing 'product'. There are already several stupid MT 'vr' world/'games' where you can run around socializing, spending money in the cash shop, and playing dumb mini-games.
If it not only takes you 'off the grid' but away from access to it then it is a big time waster with little to no redeeming value to EVE, and no MT don't mean EVE gets better.
Example, if you can't update your market orders from a wrist device/other tech while out of pod then playing mini-games in EVE is about as useful as playing tetris on your old phone with no way to access EVE:Internet Spaceships.

Originally by: Captain Futur3 I know that they said there will be bars and minigames and stuff like that, so dont misunderstand me.
They've been brainstorming for 3+ years so they've only done serious work for like 6 months...
I'm basing this on the serious lack of functionality and polish on the new character creator. Don't get me wrong, the results can be very good if enough effort is put into creating a char, but there are so many niggles and omissions that it hasn't even entered the pre-alpha phase. A beta should be quite playable with some bugs still remaining, but the current version with almost no art being final is just starting to get off the ground.
I'm seriously not waiting for much. I'm hoping I'm wrong but I doubt there's much more content than we have heard of. |
