I strongly suspect that this release may cause some foreign governments to scale back their diplomatic cooperation with us, will likely inflame tensions in the Middle East (outing Sunni governments for advocating attacks on a Shiite government is sure to win them widespread public favor ... not!), and in summary is going to create more problems for the US at a time when we don't need any more issues.
Personally, I think Assange has guaranteed himself some serious jail time. Therefore, I hope the US government pursues him to the fullest extent of the law, for having broken the law by publishing these documents. I'm sure he'll be looking at a nice, long, jail sentence.
So you don't think the drone attacks, the checkpoint incidents, and the rest of the effects of occupation don't negatively affect diplomatic relations overseas? And I address only the tip of the iceberg.
I hope Assange, who I don't fully trust, gets a Freedom Medal or whatever they call that stupid trinket these days. Just to **** you off.

Originally by: Sergeant Spot The Chinese go ballistic at the drop of a hat. Just one example: Imagin if wikileaks published a few documents showing the chinese behaving badly in Tibet? The North Koreans LOOK for opportunities to be offended so they can kill people.
The Chinese government holds mass public executions of citizens on a weekly basis for even minor crimes, in stadiums, after driving them through cities on flatbed trucks for everyone to see, then send the remaining family the bill for the bullet. That might be the worst thing any country does, and they openly admit it. And last i checked they still screw with Tibet on a regular basis, even though people tell them to stop and disagree with it. The Chinese government straight up doesn't care what Bono or world leaders think of what they do, they just do what they want and make no apologies.
North Korea also doesn't really care. Most of the citizens are starving or living on foreign aid, while they literally spend all their money on a possible attempt to unify North and South Korea. They're not trying to convince anyone they're humanitarians. They're still ****ed off at the US for splitting the country up and have war on their minds. They're not pretending anything else is going on, or pretending to be buddies with the US. What you see is what they are.

It's highly entertaining. It's like X-factor, Weakest Link, Coronation Street and The Apprentice all rolled into one, but real and better.
There's nothing very surprising in there though, but I bet that won't stop the Middle East going ape-plops with each other.

I think the Chinese are like the Minbari from Babylon 5. On the surface a gentle and thoughtful tribe, rich with history. But if you are sharp with them and insult their 'honour' they will emo rage and the do all sorts of convoluted distanced actions to exact revenge.
I am particularly interested in articles about mystery man Hu Jintao.

Oh hey I know, if you don't want your diplomatic relations negatively affected you probably shouldn't do stupid **** that makes people mad at you? Not that there's a nation on earth who adheres to that doctrine.

As for how such documents are gained, well, if wikileaks is serious about making the world a better place, they'll need some dedictaed agents willing to risk death and torture. If they don't bother, then their morals are fake, and its all about them feeling self important regardless of who gets hurt and regardless of how much damage they do.
Wikileaks is a news source, not a privately run intelligence agency. I'm sure that they'd be delighted if someone sent in the state secrets of North Korea just as I'm sure that that's very unlikely to happen.

I have to say after all the revelations I'm still waiting to facepalm harder than when I read this.
"A man involved in talks with the Afghan government purporting to be the Taliban's number two Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansour was reportedly an impostor -- a "lowly shopkeeper" from Quetta, Baluchistan, according to Western and Afghan officials (NYT, Post, AP). The impostor was reportedly flown to Kabul on British military aircraft for at least two meetings, is said to have met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and was given "a lot of money" to persuade him to talk part in the talks."

It would be entertaining if Wikileaks would get their hands on what diplomats from across the globe wrote about George W Bush. That would be very very entertaining reading.

So what youre saying is that if a nation do something criminal and then hide it behind secrecy, people who expose criminal actions done my government should be arrested?
You know, thats the difference between criminal nations and democratic ones. And I like to think a democratic nation dont do such thing.

If invading one country who did nothing to antagonize us, and another who simply harbored people who antagonized us didn't bring the nukes raining down, I highly doubt that a few mean words said in what amounts to a troll between bored diplomats is going to hurt the image of America.
Having said that, I believe that all information that affects people on an international scale should be free and open. I applaud wikileaks for what they do, regardless of their motives our their target.
Now, having said that, if it doesn't involve a pop stars vajay-jay, or the latest sports star to go to prison then no one is going to care.

The fact that some of the stuff leaked by WikiLeaks contains evidence of outright illegal activities, ordered by some of our highest officials, would hopefully spark investigations of those named, and that they be held accountable....but, they wont be.
As the granddaughter of Gypsies displaced during World War II, all I can say is...no, doing whatever you "feel is warranted to protect national security" is not Ok.

Wikileaks are trolls. They are successfully trolling politicians, governments and, most of all, the commercial media, who reveal their own uselessness by their reactions. This is worth more than the content of leaked documents, which nobody is going to read anyway.

Ehhh... as someone who's family comes from Iran that doesn't surprise me at all (only thing I'm surprised by is that people actually thought it was a SECRET). People there still get all ****y and personal about slight cultural/religious differences (i.e. Sunnis don't like Shi'ites, Arabs don't like Persians, and vice versa) centuries after the schism(s) actually happened. Honestly, they should all just take a page out of European history and learn to live and let be.
As for Wikileaks... I'm torn.
On one hand, I love the fact that so much hypocrisy and secrecy is being revealed. In a so-called republic/democracy withholding information and keeping people ignorant about what is being done in their name (be it good or bad) is [to me] a slap in the face to anyone who actually CARES. No doubt that Ben Franklin is turning in his grave.
On the other hand, I understand the value of withholding certain information in certain situations. Information can be damaging and/or misconstrued if put into the wrong context.
I will be watching this closely. _______________________

and so forth.

Your ignorance is showing. Those gunships waited over a hour to fire, at first thinking the news guys were being held by the terrorists. Once it became obvious that they were hanging with them willingly, they ceased to be a concern. Don't want to get shot?, don't CHOOSE to walk around a war zone with terrorists.
Wikileaks knew that, but figured they could spin it to reflect badly on the U.S.
Play nice while you butcher each other.

Edited by: Benny Hill on 30/11/2010 05:38:34 The problem with Wikileaks is that they have no credibility. It is run by a rapist and are funded by a leftist organization which is a puppet of George Soros. And the source of the war documents comes from a soldier on suicide watch suffering from depression after his homosexual relationship ended that made him hate society and then the military over its homosexual policy, while he pursued other leftist groups funded by George Soros. There is no way to even confirm whether the released documents are even legitimate, or what documents are missing that put others in context.
