I just hit autopilot, have a few minutes before I arrive back in The Forge and thought I'd reflect on the experiences that led me to New Eden. The year was 1990, I had just purchased a game for my Apple IIc called "Space Rogue". Besides a realistic space flying experience, one could travel all over the galaxy trading goods, upgrading weapons, and all the while avoiding space pirates and doing the occasional mission to afford it all. Warp speed to November 2010. I had long given up my dream of being a deep space miner in favor of the more mundane activities in life like day trading and real estate speculation when a friend of mine recommended a book to read: Dungeons and Desktops. The book attempted to categorize and delineate an otherwise chaotic subject: the evolution (sometimes devolution) of RPG computer games, from Akalabeth to Dungeon Siege with a part at the end all about MMOs. In the last chapter EVE online gets a few paragraphs in between Ultima Online and WoW. My heart began to flutter as I read about how EVE was an "anything goes" type of atmosphere, where players could be pirates, space station owners, and...lonely deep space miners! After a few hours of playing the trial version I was immediately reminded of one of the things I had liked about Space Rogue: a very high learning curve. After reading over the forums, I rejoiced when I found out that this was, indeed, the Holy Grail of MMOs for someone like me: It's difficult to learn, but once you figure it out, the experience is unlike anything out there! I then got my regular account set up and am currently contemplating double boxing. I'm a miner after all... Well, my autopilot just disengaged, no waypoints again. Thank you to the EVE online staff and creators for sticking with a great formula over the years and allowing me to live my dream as a galactic deep space miner/trader/planet colonizer! Love, Mercuri

First of all, welcome to EVE. I'm glad you are enjoying the experience
Secondly, don't take what people say on the forums very seriously. We have a rather high concentration of players who disagree with CCP, but instead of leaving simply whine...about everything...
And by 'about everything' I mean some people would start complaining if CCP saved a litter of kittens from certain doom and took them back to their worried mommy. I can already see a thread about CCP focusing too much attention on unimportant matters, abandoning EVE and creating a new Hello Kitty RPG for 12-year-old girls. It's true! I read it on the internet!
Thirdly, try to get yourself into a good corporation as soon as possible, mining alone might be kick-ass right now, but it will get monotone after a while. In a corporation you can check out what else EVE has to offer and if nothing else, at least you get people to keep you company while you mine.
And last but not least, never undock an expensive ship if you are not ready to lose it.
Have fun and fly safe \o

I think most would actually. This is supposed to be a harsh cold universe. CCP should ransom them to the mother cat, and then jettison them all into space anyway after she paid up. - - - Dian'h Might - C&Ps resident "internet kleptomaniac" |

Dungeon Siege!!
One thing I absolutely LOVED about that game was the ability to bring max 7 pack mules with you on quests so you never had stash and inventory problems!!
Good old days ...

Funny that you mention Space Rogue for inspiration. Given how close it is to mainstream favourites like Privateer. :)
But over the last few years it has been rare to find anything that compares to the depth of those sorts of games. ---

Thanks for all the well wishes! And I will be joining a corp just as soon as the whole "lone miner" thing gets old.

Edited by: iBlob TheBuilder on 29/11/2010 01:07:58 I would just like to warn you about Hulkageddon 4, as its that time of year again. Its where veteran players target miners, such as yourself, to blow up in high sec for the lulz and tears.
You seem to have a pretty good attitude as a new player, so I just thought you might like to know about it.

Welcome to EVE mate! As a new(er) player to EVE, I have to say this is the best damn MMO I could possibly find on the market today. I've been a big fan of space and such much like yourself, so I know you'll get into EVE.
