OS X 10.5.8
Upon installing the patch, it failed, and it told me that I needed to reinstall. To make a long story short, I tried running the repair tool found in the sticky in this forum, and that resulted in me being unable to launch the client (clicking on the icon did nothing).
/var/log/system.log told me this when I clicked on the EVE icon:
Nov 30 11:13:03 com.apple.launchd[91] ([0x0-0x2e02e].com.transgaming.EVEOnline[247]): posix_spawnp("/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/cider", ...): Permission denied Nov 30 11:13:03 com.apple.launchd[91] ([0x0-0x2e02e].com.transgaming.EVEOnline[247]): Exited with exit code: 1
I opened Terminal, and I did the following:
$ cd /Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/ $ chmod 755 cider $ chmod 755 cider_noui
The client then launched normally. I hope this helps the developer of the repair tool and any users that experience this.

This is great advise and works like a charm, Thanks!
I would offer the following suggestions to this for the "Terminally Challenged"
for this step:
$ cd /Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/
it should be:
$ cd "/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/"
with quotes as terminal is funny about names with spaces.
Also in my case, I had an additional error"
wine:could not exec the server '/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/Frameworks/wineserver'
I executed this command in terminal as well:
$ cd "/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/Frameworks/" $ chmod 755 wineserver
And it worked fine.

That's a different issue. SHA1 is a hash algorithm which is being used to compare your files with the "known good" files. A fingerprint is generated of your files and the known good files, and if they don't match, then yours have been altered at some point. Either the comparison was incorrect or the SHA1 hash generating application used to generate the hash either failed to do its job in some way or it could not read the files.

I've had this error, or one like it for the last few patches. Quite annoying.

I'm having trouble trying to fix the patch. I received a SHA1 error. I was able to enter the "/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/". After that, I don't think that the next two commands were accepted. What do I need to do?

Patch also failed for me for two different installs of this game on the latest OS X, complaining about MacOS/cider (and a few other WINE-related files). I just downloaded the 3G client (used to it with Sisi breaking on every patch) again and it worked, including the additional patch after installation.

Wuh? Why should I have to be a programmer to use a product I'm paying for? This is what I put in and it spit it back.(EVE Online.app part changed to name of my copy)

I know, I feel your pain.
Try these (including the quotes):
/usr/bin/cd "/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/" /bin/chmod 755 cider /bin/chmod 755 cider_noui

Nope, gives me this:
Last login: Thu Nov 26 10:23:06 on console imac:~ iMac$ /usr/bin/cd "/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/" imac:~ iMac$ /bin/chmod 755 cider chmod: cider: No such file or directory imac:~ iMac$ /bin/chmod 755 cider_noui
Says cider file doesn't exist but it is there.

Make sure you're really in the "/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/" after you issue the cd command. Use either /bin/pwd or /usr/bin/pwd
One of those should print "/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/" as the working directory (pwd stands for "print working directory").
If none of this works, do this:
export PATH=/usr/bin:/bin cd "/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/" chmod 755 cider
See if that works?
Does this print out anything?
/bin/ls "/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/"
Or this? (sorry, away from my Mac)
/usr/bin/ls "/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/"

This didn't do anything for me at all. Oh well. Thanks for the help though; but, I'm going to stop pretending to be a programmer and act like a customer who's paying for a product that doesn't work and just complain to support.

I received an error while getting the patch: Examining File : /Contents/Frameworks/wineserver -> SHA1 Error
I copy and pasted "/Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/" into the terminal and got:
-bash: /Applications/EVE Online.app/Contents/MacOS/: is a directory
Then I copied and pasted: chmod 755 cider and received:
chmod: cider: No such file or directory
And I copied and pasted: chmod 755 wineserver
chmod: wineserver: No such file or directory
What am I doing wrong? |

Same for me. When i start eve my screens stays black and nothing is happening. Force-quit by pressing the power button because nothing else is helping. Tried some of the things in the topic but hey i'm only a user. I know some sudo commands and thats it.
I'm now downloading the client to reinstall to see if that works. But the server wont go faster than 600kb/s, so 3gig is alot of waiting time.

I am having the same issue with my client on my Mac. It downloaded everything fine and now after reading and trying the differnet solutions here and before them the game would act as if starting up take about a min to get the music started in the game but just remain at a black screen after waiting sound track would loop but the screen remains black and can not force quit with command only option is to do a hard shut down of the system. Any assistance with getting a real fix would be welcome.

Gah, the same. Black screen of death. Also, have to force-quit by pressing the power button.

If eve on-line can not fix the black screen then let me down load the old version that was work until they figure this out. This is total uncool. I thought eve on-line was better than this, because this is amateur hour. This poor quality is the reason I quit using window products that never really work correctly.

Suffering same problem.
Click on icon, get splash screen then just goes to a black screen.
Sometimes after waiting about 30mins I will get the login in screen and everything is fine from there, other times I will get nothing.
Tried the fix as posted by OP and others, didn't change the problem.
Game is now unplayable for me due to this.
Thankfully, with CCP's track record I put in long skills to train :) But on the other hand it isn't a good thing that players know that every time you say "Patch is coming" we do this, as it's almost certain something will end up b0rked :(
