So dx9 graphics still? What shall I do with several hundred spare graphics cores? Run an n-body simulation in the background perhaps?
Are we heading towards a console game here?

So OP; please explain to us, the posters, which massive improvements EVE would have if it would be DirectX 11.

Making EVE running in DX10-11 would be a major major problem I think it would take forever and for what?
EVE right now looks stunning in fact its very much like DX10 in my opinion.
The bump maps are awesome, now we have in game AA which works a charm.
The only thing visually for my personally that could increase the wow factor would be better weapon effects, other than that Its awesome.
Well done CCP

DX10/11 would do a lot of things. As he mentions it would free up the game to use more processor cores allowing it to run faster on the computers end. Less graphical lag for max current settings. Explosions could be more dynamic and fluid looking. Thrusters could look way cooler and possible return of trails. They could make ships actually break apart into several peices when they explode instead of just dissapear in a big fireball.
Theres a LOT of stuff that DX10 and 11 could do for this game graphically. Would it be a pain to implement? Sure...will they do it? Eventually...guaranteed they will eventually. Anybody who says they won't is an idiot. They are already pushing out support for older shader model cards. They would only be doing this if they are intending to upgrade further. And thats all CCP has done with this game is upgrade and push for better graphics over the years.
It will happen. Someday.

If the backwards compatibility was revoked at the same time, it would be.
OTOH, we're not playing a console one-size-fits-all game here. Why shouldn't there be an option for higher-end PCs to be used to the full? Do we have to wait for our hardware to be obsolete before it'll be supported? As some in-the-know posters have commented there is a LOT that dx11 can do. No small effort, but that's the way the market is heading.
Not everybody wants to spend the money required to have hundreds of graphics cores, or the multi-monitor systems such cards support. But those of us who do are at the margins, and quite willing to get the best out of hardware by playing games that do support it instead. Then again, as a long-awaited "major upgrade" there isn't really a whole lot in Incursion. If I wanted the excitement and thrills of character generation I'd play The Sims.

People without any understanding about how graphics / games / python works should not make any comments, dx11 will not free up anything to use more processor cores in any way other than dx10 or dx9 that's more how a game is programmed if it uses multiple cores or not.
Also graphically they aren't even using 50% of the possibilities with dx9 and there is absolutely no need to go to dx10/11 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pinky: Gee, Brain. What are we going to do tonight?

Edited by: Rian O''Shea on 30/11/2010 21:24:14 Yes, the game is using SO much cpu that I can only run 6 clients at the same time. If we could use the GPU more then I could probably run 8 or so. Also, we have a lot of physics going on in EVE and everything is calculated client side.

To all the clueless DX11 people, do you realize EVE is written in Python? Single core! Non optimized full of bottlenecks and blocks piece of garbage? GFX is the only part of the code that is not lagging :) I can have nice >150fps in big fleet fights ... until I enable brackets lol

Why not? In DX10/DX11 you have Compute Shader support...But these are SM 4.x / SM 5.x features, still some years ahead. CCP will get rid of SM 2.0 GFX mid 2011, but if they decide to drop SM 3.0 support, the forums will be flooded with whiners who want to play on their (you choose) Smart Phone / netbook / 8-years-old-laptop etc... ___________________________________ Science & Diplomacy Manager @ BECKS Circle-of-Two |
