Edited by: Master Gotama on 02/12/2010 23:16:29 holy crap! apparently the fastest supercomputer in the US Defence Department is made of a bunch of PS3's. Not sure if i should be frightened or excited .
on a side note, never knew you could install linux on the PS3 either...
edit: subject title, duh...

Hahahaha. I can hear the rage from the big defence contractors now. 2 mil for the computing power the air force got is going to set a horrible horrible precident from their point of view.
Btw this was first done by some astrophysicist looking to get a cheap way to run his calcs who put together 6 of them in a similar fashion.

The real news is that SONY pulled out support for Linux on PS3 some months ago so all the current PS3 supercomputer projects are on hold.
If I remember the article from 6 or more months ago right, the Air Force super computer now runs the old Sony firmware in order to keep Linux support. If some simpleton gets the bright idea to upgrade the firmware on Air Force PS3 super computer...

That's actually a pretty cool set up, they're getting a lot of computing power for a pretty low price.

that's actually the most newsworthy aspect of the story. US Military able to develop and build something at a cost-savings.

Old.
The reason they chose to use a large amount of PS3s is because they had decent processing capability at a very cheap price. If you recall - Sony sold the consoles at a loss - with the assumption that they would make it back in software sales.
That of course made them very interesting if all you wanted was a counting system. Being extremely accessible and replaceable also helps.

Not exactly. One estimate of PS3 cost is 500 dollars. PS3 originally sold for 400 dollars. Yes, Sony was loosing 100 dollars. But. Even if Sony sold PS3 for 500 dollars or more, a Beowulf cluster like the one Air Force is running would still make more cost effective super computer.
PS3 is amazing piece of hardware and it was mass produced, that makes it popular and less expansive. There are better super computers out there, but they are not mass produced.

PS3 super computer finishes the calcs in about 3 hours for a 2 mil investment. Cray super computer finishes the calcs in about 1 hour for several orders of magnitude more of investment. This is why they they nixed linux support in the latest firmware so they wouldn't feel the wrath of the US defense contractors.
