Plus, the very first NPC a newbie kills in any MMO is always a rat.

I believe it is also a humorous reference to the well used MMORPG/RPG game mechanic of going out and grinding rats for exp.

When you stepped out of the city gates of Freeport, the first thing you usually killed was a rat.
Of course my first encounter with a mob (mobile object) in a MMO was when my character walked off the platform in Kelethin and after plummeting to his death (screwy gamma settings) respawned next to an orc pawn which resulted in his second death seconds later and since said orc was sitting on the respawn this resulted in a nasty little death loop until I managed to figure out how to run to a nearby guard.
But in general grinding rats was one of the earliest MMO tropes. Low level characters go around killing rats. Then usually as you advanced you found larger and larger rats to kill.
In the end the only real difference from one mob to another was their HP and damage output ergo you go grind rats.

Cause you go kill them and we can't call them pirates cause that term is used for the 'majority' of eve's pew pew spaceship killers and that would get confusing also cause they are dumb as ****.

Yes there is a story behind the term "rats".
About 6 years ago we all called the "rats" "computer generated non player controlled isk providing belt located combat entities or CGNPCIPBLBE for short. Some new guy heard this and said, "rats, thats too much to say!".
The rest is history as they say. |

It's mysterious, the reason for this! It may be nobody knows. Everyone seems to have their own version.
But the most obvious reason, is to differentiate between players engaging in piracy (pirates) and NPC entities that are part of NPC pirate corps, who prowl the belts to provide targets for PvE'ers, and harass AKF miners. (rats)
The 'Really Atrocious Tactics" one might be true too, as the rats, like most/all NPCs, attack by using the 'approach' command and will fly straight towards you, making kiting them dead simple. (just 'keep at range' just slightly outside their guns range and peck them to death.)

Why do people keep making **** up?
We've told you the answer it's an MMO trope. In MMO's you kill rats you kill small rats you large kill rats you kill giant rats you kill undead rats you kill clockwork rats you kill divine rats.
There is no other reason to it.
It isn't mysterious it's just that some people are stupid.

Yes because we have rstta and a pirate which are two different things in this game, usually rats were referred as ones lurking about the asteroid fields.

Both can be true, rats are called that to differenciate from player pirates and the term comes from low level players hunting rats in other games. Every other "reason" is made on the fly to look smart.

I've done a little research and come with interesting results from 2003 on the first times the term was used: Eve: Not bad at all 2003.07.04 - We find rats were called NPC Pirates at the begining: Quote: "I've joined a nice little Corp and am happily blowing up NPC pirates" "go "coo thats all glowing and er.. stuff. and look, more of the same NPC pirates that drop the same garbage"" "Please change your future advertisements to not include PvP, Pirating, or anything related to combat except for Player vs NPC Pirates"
How CCP _COULD_ have resolved m0o issues2003.06.08 - Players killing other people in low sec are called Pirates: Quote: "We spoke to a GM about what we were doing and he said he liked to see an actual pirate corp taking over" "Also it was unreasonable that a 0.4 system was so easily taken over by pirates"
Sentry guns at gates on chaos - info2003.06.09 - NPC and PC Pirates reference and the first rat reference made to a PC pirate! Quote: "There are still npc pirates at the gates, and i had to shoot em myself, the guns didnt interfere, which is a strange situation, cause maybe pc pirates wont be able to conduct business there, but npc ones." "you need to work with a friend in a different corp to test this, or find a "friendly" PC 'rat to start shooting you near the guns"
Gang targeting ...2003.06.24 - Here we find the first record of NPC being called rats, but it seems as an interchangeable term for pirates: Quote: "your gang is in 0.0 space and aproach 4-5 heavy pirates ..." "found it quite difficult to explain over our voice communictions which rat to target first"
-= Syndicate Citizens Unite! =-2003.06.26 - A clear example of how the term is abreviatted: Quote: "A Pie-rat PC Corp named 'The Gang' is taking up operations in The Syndicate. As a small Corp struggling in the outer regions, I can ill-afford thier 'donations'."
To Solo and enjoy...2003.06.28 - Another example of PC Pirates called rats: Quote: "People will play the game how they see fit, not how other people tell them how to play it. After all its the respectable folk who make this game work, no the pc rat types."
So we can conclude that the term definitely came from abbreviating Pirates, very embarrasing for Skex Relbore, who attacked so vehemently those people who "keep making **** up"! Unless new evidence comes, it is clear that the term comes from pirate - pie rat - 'rat - rat and it was applied to both PC and NPC pirates on the begining, when was the term become attached to NPC rats only to differentiate them from players is another story, probably related with times when pirates were more accepted than the times from where the term comes from.

I found this thread more interesting than I thought i would.
As an '04 player, I seem to remember using the terms 'belt-rat' as distinguished from 'mish-rats' (mission NPCs) and 'gate-rat' and pirate, which was (in my corp, anyway) solely meant for player pirates. I'm not going to swear to this, however. It was a long time ago and frankly, anyone getting upset about this subject is lolretentive.

not quite true.
from release in 2003 many of us in EVE were calling pirates 'rats' for short, and sometimes would distinguish between player rats or npc rats. The fact that in many MMO's you kill actual rats to gain exp and that it has become a general sort of definition makes it even more applicable here and it works either way.
both ways are correct in EVE, since both methods of reference were legitimately used by players at the beginning of this game regardless of outside definitions, personal preference or developer intent.
personally in EVE I've always used rats as short piRATS. In other MMO's I've played i actually don't even use that term when i really am killing rats lol, that's just grinding.

It doesn't matter, player pirates were called rats at the begining, so other games' terminology doesn't apply here, given that players are not NPCs (at least not in the origin of the word, nowadays the term is most probably interchangeable for the newcomers). It's the same as corps vs guilds, the spacial environment doesn't cope with the fantasy world that is normally assumed in mmorpgs and that certainly is assumed in the definition on that same site that wouldn't include EVE as mmorpg because it doesnt't interacts "with other fantasy things such as fire demons and aqua fairies". Think for yourself, don't blindly trust the internet.
