So, let's assume that I paid my subscription in advance for, say, a year. I would like to set training for several months so I won't have to fiddle with it at inconvenient times.
I seem to recall that some people believe it helps "alt/char farmers". How is that? Why is it a bad thing to let us have a longer queue? I mean there is no training anyways when a subscription is not paid for so it's not that.
What is it then?
The simple incentive to make people log in?

Ah those newbs.
I remember the time when I used to drive my bike, in the rain, uphill, for an hour, to reach my PC and change my skill at 3 A.M. because there was no queue. _______________________ Drink Eau du Nichup«, the taste of heaven. Now available as Nichup Citrus« as well! |

mostly so you have to log in about daily.
although having a 1d and a few min queue time when you just want to add the next level that will take a week and you need to go or something is just really annoying.

The queue is meant to solve a different problem than the one you're describing: the problem of having to change skills at inopportune moments or awkward times of day.
That's all it's for, and for that purpose, there's no need for it to be more than 24h long. In fact, it could probably be a lot shorter and still work just as well. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Now imagine if we could have the queue auto inject skillbooks once the prerequisites are met as well as doing the yearly attribute remaps. It would be awesome, then you can be away for a year at a time and not miss a thing.
Ok, so what I once proposed a long time before the skill queue was introduced was an 8h queue. Just long enough to get you past annoying things like sleep and work, not to have a fresh character skilled up while you are away travelling around the world.

While I am sure your post is full of sarcasm, I still feel this is how the skill queue should work. More specifically, I think you should be able to inject a skillbook so long as you have at least 1 level of each prereq. Of course, it would require rewriting the queue code so that it checks for prereqs (not just the prior skill level).

Honestly, I see not a single reason why the skillqueue can't be made longer. If I'm away for a while what harm can it do if I can put up some more skills and not being forced to either put on a very long skill or take my netbook with me.

I actually made a post at some point asking for the ability to tell it to inject and train skills in queue. I actually did get a CCP response.
As I recall it was basically "yeah- I see why you could want that. The suggestion came up when we were making the queue. Unfortunately, that would require rewiting pretty much the entire skill database system, so it's not gonna happen."
I'm paraphrasing, as it was a few months ago.... but the answer was no. *** Wish list for PI:

As for why not a longer queue, I imagine because it would take more memory, more server resources to keep track of skill lists for 400k characters. You make it 2-day and you've doubled the size of some database somewhere. Need for speed and all that.

Edit for content:
The queue already has a limit to how many entries you can have in it, doubling the length doesn't automatically double the data set. It's not like it stores an entry for every single second of your skill queue length or something like that.

Just think how many threads like these could have been prevented had they called it a "Auto Skill Changer" rather than a "Skill Queue".

Yes. To make people log in. Or to quote CCP when asked why they didnÆt make the cue longer, ôwe want people to playö.

be happy that you even have the 24h skill queue
in the good old days you didn't even have that (you had to plan ahead way more, or accept to gain less skillpoints)

Lost quite a lot of sp back than because my wife turned off the alarm clock which i set to get up at 3am to start a new skill. 24h is more than enough buffer for me (and she is happy about that too). ------------------------------------------------------- Sig was removed due to derogatory comments towards a group of people. -Karl Chroimcer

My suggestion is some way to put skills in queue via EVE Gate. So, even if you don't have EVE installed, you can easily access the Internet and change your queue.

If you are going to be a away for a while just stick a really long skill at the end of the list. I think being to line up skills for months on end is a little extreme, it's not that difficult to log in every once in a while. And like the above poster said, we used to not have the option at all.

QFT. Before there were millions of threads demanding a skill queue. Ppl were whining they had to get up 4 am to change the skill, which I thought to be silly since I never had to wake up to change skill during the night. I saved myself from it with just a few hours of careful planning and that was without evemon too.
If you find changing skills every 24h cumbersome, do this: put <24h of skills into the queue and then slap some long lvl 5 skill at the end. Repeat when the long skill is done.

Or rather: put <24h of skills into the queue then add a lvl 5 at the end and then when you next log on, add another <24h in front of it; repeat as necessary.
And yes, waking up late for work but still needing to log on to swap skills around was... inconvenient. The current queue system really is much better.

I totally support this idea. Most areas are way too crowded. This would ensure most people never log on for long periods of time and free up valuable server resources.
Brilliant!

And certain people would do this with new characters and sell them for $, which is what CCP are trying to avoid with the 24 hr queue.
Remember, you can stick a 28 day skill (or longer) in the queue as long as the current skill queue finishes in less than 24 hours.

àand after the 14th, the queue can be up to 112.5 days long anyway, so why bother. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |
