Edited by: SHK7 Fiction on 08/12/2010 14:50:32 Edited by: SHK7 Fiction on 08/12/2010 14:49:00 I'm considering switching my game box over to ubuntu since I love ubuntu and eve is basically the only game I play anyways, I'm just wondering if there are graphic quality issues because of the emulation through wine? I overheard that alot of games could not be run in full quality, which is my last hurdle in making the switch, the only thin I love more than Linux is very nice spaceship graphics.... And weed..PS sorry for the wowed typing I wrote this on my iPhone, had to edit 3 times.

Only way to know is test it for yourself.
I run two clients in linux (I will never install or use windows again) and have most the settings turned on and everything on high.
Known issues: - Shadows may not show up right or be off -- disabling these doesn't seem to bother me. - HDR has been known to cause crashes, but I use it just fine. - See my anti aliasing thread about issues with the new AA feature but graphics to me look fine without it.
I've played many games in wine, and for the most part the quality is as good as windows (in some cases I get increased stability and better performance). Though this is more a game per game issue. Depending on how 'standard' the game programmers are. the winehq app database is a good place to read though on games, issues and the likes.

I run the game with full graphics settings in Kubuntu and have no graphical issues currently. I am using a Nvidia card however. It seems that most people with graphical issues are using ATI cards.

Thanks for the feedback guys, running with AA would be a preference, I'm quite fond of it, I personally turn shadows off because I get pixelated shadows currently which is anoying, id rather not see it at all. Luckily I am running an nvidia card and loving that as well.. hmmm well lets if I can put this together and make it work... I'll post any progress here later down the line.
Thanks.

Wine is not an emulator. I say that not to be a **** but goes right to your question. As far as image quality, I don't see a difference. As far as FPS, any direct3d game run through wine will have lower FPS than in native windows. This is because wine translates the D3D commands into openGL and this process takes a bit of resources. It depends on your setup but with a 285gtx the framerates are so high anyway I can't tell a difference between windows and wine.

Many games cannot be run in wine at all, let alone full quality. But as wine has evolved many games that weren't playable have become very playable, it all works on identifying bugs and solving them. But if Eve is your main game it should run and look great for you.

Hey. I am thinking of it too. Just wondering about FPS decrease. Anyone participated in a large fleet fights when lag was involved? Do linux players suffer more cuz of lag + lower fps?
Any comments welcome and thanks for feedback.

With a decent graphics card, I think the lag from fleet fights would be more from the server rather than the performance hit from wine.
I'll try a comparison between wine an native fps later on. It won't be an accurate account of how a large fleet battle will be (I don't have one on hand to test it lol) but it will be relative to itself.

To see yopu guys activly giving feedback and support to other players in the process or recently switched over to a Linux OS is very refeshing. A friend of mine had installed and set up Ubuntu 5, a long time ago. Needless to say, I dont have that machine anymore, but IF I should ever decide to get Ubuntu back on here and run Eve, I belive I would frequent this page more often. Keep up the support guys. It's cool to see.

Edited by: Squealing Piglet on 19/01/2011 07:26:17 Just thought I should share my experience with Eve Online on my HP 6730s (Radeon Mobility HD 3430 version) with openSUSE 11.3. The shadows don't show up, couldn't figure it out, my characters always miss one eye in the portrait, major graphical glitches from time to time.
I use Catalyst 10.12 custom built package for my openSUSE 11.3.
Tried many things, except Cedega for a while. I have a subscription so I might give that one a go before it runs out and I still can download the engine (cause Cedega is turning off their old service).
Anyway, the new Gametreelinux.com website and service hopefully will do wonders for us linux users :D
On the other hand, some other games through wine run flawlessly for me. But not the latest Incursion as of yet.
My other gaming rig is Win7 Pro 64bit. I prefer it for games.
