‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾ Note: This is just a user created concept of an dream UI, though it is a rough Photoshop job it captivates the idea. The screenshot clutters ALL the new ideas onto one single screenshot for the sake of presentation. __________________________
I was thinking the EVE UI, as confuzzled as it currently is, reading data from it makes your eyes dance all over the screen. I decided to create a concept UI tweaks, which includes tweaked and new features:
- Current location displays a larger arrow, also displays Wardec in effect warning at all times curing wardec.
- Skill training notice displays what was just finished, whats next in que or warning of no que.
- New Mail box shows which inbox is new, and Notifications are highlighted with importance.
- WARDECs are announced with firm notice and further details upon click.
- Chat invites are no longer intrusive, may include a 150 character msg intro.
- Fleet commands ordered by the Fleet/Wing Commander will display clearly where your ship is going, included message is optional.
- Bounty's issued to you may come with a brief 150 character message.
- Instead of an "Analog" looking flight controls, you can have a clean layout of your ship's systems in a digital looking format.
- Enhanced target details show whatever you ticked in the Overview (e.g. angular velocity) in a confined listed format, a work around instead of having to make the Overview massively wide to read further details about a target.
- Combat Log only displays COMBAT relevant information, in short terms on the screen.
- Drones/Fighter interface is displayed like a combat log list, this would be useful for carrier pilots with lots of fighters on field. This could probably work out for a better "Watch" list too.
- Warning announcements, such as a forming cynosural field is displayed urgently and clearly on the screen. Only very important warnings display like this, enough to get attention and not incidentally dismissed by a "combat" message box.
- Chat will have channels and easier "X-up" features, quick location link drops etc.
Now you may view the screenshot here hosted by imageshack.
I decided to post this now cause I got tired working on it. I think later I'll probably edit in a default Window that gets rid of that tiny > arrow at the top corner and make the window more intuitive for info access. What do you guys think about this?

I like the look so far, though you should consider imposing it over an ingame screenshot so we can see how it would look in space.

I cannot read anything on your UI, my vision is too poor and your text is too small and thin. Granted, the current UI is not much better, but still.
I was actually about to write up a big list of the problems and fallacies in your UI, when I realized it was pointless.
I share your dream of a new eve UI, but there are two imporant things for you to consider:
1. Eves UI is not that bad. I'm ****ing serious. A few months ago I went and tried out a whole heap of free MMO's. Go look at the jade dynasties UI. Its an explosion in a button factory, and none of the tooltips tell you anything. Even wows default UI has so much crap in it that its totally unusable. Both games require significant modification to make the UI's a useful tool instead of a hindrance better replaced by bashing your face repeatedly into the keyboard.
I'm not saying I wouldn't modify eves UI if I could, but eves UI doesn't activly prevent me from playing the game. Which you just lost.
2. This is dev material. The successful creation of a UI requires many prototypes, even more analysis and is not something you can do on your own. For example, you probably did not realize that the text on your UI would be too small for me to read. Thats not your fault, but it is a problem.
So yes, lets campaign for a new UI. But don't try and make it for the devs, its their job to make it for you!

What Eve really needs is a more animated/interactive UI like in the trailers. Use a ship scanner and you have a 3D layout of the ship you're scanning that appears in circular format around the ship you're targeting. This like this would make the UI more intuitive, possibly even more user friendly.
For instance, let's go through something that everyone uses daily. The right click and select target. Let's say you find your rat in question and wish to target it, as it stands we currently have a bar at the bottom of the screen that slowly decreases depending on how long it takes to target said...well..target. Rather, it would be much more useful and interesting to have a readout that would display the targets signature radius and your scan resolution on the side of your target as sort of a drop down. These two things are not game breaking if known and would serve to explain why the targeting time is the length that it is in a more 'hands on' way.
Personally a new UI would be good for the game if it were done well.

Edited by: Achurua on 13/12/2010 22:48:35 thats funny the text size is the same size as this UI was created over an emplaced screenshot. you're complaining about nothing.
It doesn't matter what the font is or type of font used.
Obviously this is a photoshop makeup so theres no sense being critical about the styling, it's suppose to be functional. And easier data displayed on screen, info reformatted to easily read off what is what.

I like some of the basic ideas of this interface.
1. Its moves some of the more important information to the side in a large and easy to read way, while combining it with buttons. Similar to the live tiles in Windows Phone 7. 1a. It moves notifications like "X has invited you to fleet" or "X wants to open a private conversation" to the side in a way that one doesn't accidentally decline it (Like it appears literally a small fraction of a second before you pressed 'enter' to send a chat message. And it doesn't get in the way of what I'm dong now." 1b. It puts fleet notification in a place out of the way yet always viewable.
2. Rapidly changing information like the combat long is integrated with the background (I'm assuming movable as well). Especially helpful in fights with multiple enemies. 2a. Would suggest being able to separate damaged dealt from damaged received.
3. Improve functionality of the chat window by having icons to separate whispers and can place select chat from other tabs, keeping providing as much information in one place, hopefully without overwhelming the player. 3a. I'd suggest color coding the whispers and fleet chat stuff to make it easier to spot.

That interface actually looks really nice, good work! :)
Eve's UI might have been ok for its time, but it puts off a lot of new players and is just plain fugly by 2010 standards. It'd be a huge job to redo it all, but it'd give Eve a really fresh lick of paint and help it go on for many more years.

i like it, i like it alot, eve could use a fresh paint job with its UI
Originally by: achurua # Instead of an "Analog" looking flight controls, you can have a clean layout of your ship's systems in a digital looking format.
With this point it would be good to have the option of analog or digital, i find your design to much like the original i was thinking of more digital then that
Originally by: achurua # Enhanced target details show whatever you ticked in the Overview (e.g. angular velocity) in a confined listed format, a work around instead of having to make the Overview massively wide to read further details about a target.
VERY GOOD, maybe even some of that info tracking with the ship itself (speed, distance) as well as a window or spot where all of it is printed out nicely
everything else i find good, some things dont really apply to me being a miner by living and not spending alot of time out in the battle feild
my one concern is screen space... eve already has alot of information on screen and living in Nul sec the amount of windows and information you need on screen all the time is huge
