Edited by: Aureus on 13/12/2010 21:09:25 Yeah well as long as mining is so repetitive, tedious and boring you're going to have people creating software to automate it. It's just human nature and there are no good solutions to this except having a completely new concept of mining.
Instead of the repetitive warp to asteroid belt, lock target roid, click mining module, jettison cargo when full - rinse, repeat cycle perhaps we have to revolutionize the way ore is obtained.
Personally what I would like is something like this:
1. Introduce a new system for scanning and discovering mine-able asteroids. At first if you warp to an asteroid belt you wont find anything there. But by using certain survey/astrogeology skills and doing probing/scanning of a system you can find mine-able asteroids. Think of like the way the OP hunted down his roid in low sec space.
Or perhaps you initiate a mission like a deadspace mission with puzzles, potential rats or other hazards and other fun stuff. When the mission is completed you have found a deposit.
2. Once you find an asteroid it appears in the asteroid belt as a on object which you can warp to and orbit etc and in your inventory you get a "claim". The claim is sort of a deed which states the location of the roid, what type of ore it has and it's maximum yield.
3. You can now either sell your claim to other players or you can mine it yourself. To mine it however you place a new deployable mining rig on it. This mining rig produces a fixed amount of ore over time for you sort of like an R&D agent produces RP's per day. Depending on your skill and the mining rig's attributes it can extract more ore per day than others.
You can only have a limited amount of mining rigs operating on separate claims at one time, as dictated by your skills - sort of like R&D agents with research projects.
The mining rig keeps producing that ore each until it has depleted the claim (which will be much higher than asteroids are now - think days or weeks of mining the same roid) or it is attacked and damaged. This of course might happen in low-sec or null space. If you wanted to though, when you log off you could undeploy your mining rig and then redeploy it next time you are online. Otherwise in high sec or if you are safely in your alliance space you might leave your rigs running 24/7.
4. In low-sec / null space you might find a new type of battles over strategic claims and raiding the enemies rigs to deny them resources for a period of time.
This would be an interesting system because it completely removes the unnecessary tedium that is mining and at same time makes completely nullifies macro miners. That is because anyone can setup their mining rig and it works for you while you go and do something more fun in game or log off. Macro miners would be obsolete. And mining would be fun again.
As for the ore itself I suppose it would by default be stored in the mining rig's storage hangar which you can periodically visit and haul ore from. For ease of managing a belt with multiple rigs especially alliances with potentially dozens of rigs in one belt you can anchor a special centralized storage hub and have link modules in each rig and the rigs transport the ore to the hub, so you only need to haul ore from the central hub instead of visiting each rig.

Except that insurance almost entirely invalidated the "it costs more to replace" argument for the longest part of eve's history. Apart from T2 ships, which are still expensive to replace, and fittings, which mostly aren't that expensive anyway except for certain rigs .. So if you derive pleasure from the difficulty other's have to replace their lost ships then how did you enjoy blowing them up for all the years that insurance covered most losses? How does the increased cost of minerals nowadays affect you today, considering ships cost more than they did before and insurance is worth less .. ?
I'm a relatively new player, so my experience does not go back years. However, I did cheer the insurance nerf for precisely that reason. Fights are everywhere, but meaningful fights are exceedingly rare, and the reason is the cheapness of everything. I, personally, would gladly trade fewer fights for fights that had some meaning.

I remember the days of making battleships and being able to spin a nice profit. Now, for the time it takes to make a bs and the profit is hardly worth it.
Supply and demand is the problem. Seems there is too much supply - another way to look at it is differentiation - a miner is a miner and thats it in eve and with any Industry out there - there are several types of buyer - buy cheap and replace or buy expensive and keep. We don't have this ability in eve. Ok we have expensive cruisers etc but to manufacture one you still require the same ore as what you use to make a cheap cruiser.
I'd suggest you move somewhere other than the 3 major market centers. It's not hard to make a profit with t1 construction. Just find an active area a little further out from market center and you're golden. I made money in noob alliances. Most of them don't have carriers... it's easier for them to get modules out in small fast ships, but not many BC's or BS's. Put a manufacturing/mining (likely don't even need the miner) alt in a young alliance pretty far out there, and sell your t1 crap for a couple of mill over Jita. You make loads of easy profit... They only complain when you start doing stuff like attempting to double or triple jita prices, which is just unnecessary... specially cause there's often cheap mins available. It's only difficult to be a manufacturer if you attempt to set up shop as a low skill char in a market already serviced by lots of high skill chars.
just apply the rudiments of a basic business plan, and it's simply so easy. You can easily serve yourself AND serve the other eve players around you.

LOL... sorry i could not resists! But i agree... you should have stopped mining the minute profits dropped below 1 billion isk a day. I know i did cause its not worth my time if i can't make a billion isk a day anymore!... BOO! Eve use to be GRRRRREEEEEAAAAT back then!

If I spent all day bent over in a mining ship staring at rocks I'd expect at least 5b plus I'd want the asteroids to make me breakfast after.

I try to fix the market everyday, but without leverage it's hard work trying over coming those who believe minerals are free and willing to devalue their time towards zero.
