Originally by: MotherMoon actually, I thought Katanagatari, while pretty, was too slow. they talked about the same thing like 5 minutes in the 1st 40 minutes like I was some kinda idiot >.<
maybe it gets better.
"it gets better" doesn't even cover 5% of it
think like this: series is based on a 12-volume novel, each volume = 1 arc = 1 sixty minute episode. story progresses damn good, main characters get to be well developed, and the ending is beyond epic.
pretty much the best series of this year, and has a rightful place on the top series ever done.
want to know more, Tvtropes has a good "synopsis" of the series. ---

Haven't seen much new stuff recently, but I guess I'll throw my two cents in...
*Cowboy Bebop (needs no publicity, but can't not included it) *Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (starts off awkwardly but becomes increasingly epic as it overtakes the original series) *Monster (the anime/manga equivalent of a Charles ****ens novel: a long but consistently suspenseful story, loads and loads of characters who are almost all interesting and individually memorable, and a tapestry of seamlessly integrated plot threads) *One Piece, Code Geass, and Eureka seveN (guilty pleasures, perhaps, but if you don't let yourself get hung up on the silliness, melodrama, and air-surfing mechas, respectively, you'll find exciting stories with interesting characters, IMO at least) *Welcome to the NHK and Sayonara, Zetsubou Sensei (dark comedies, if you like them you'll love them) *Paranoia Agent and Requiem from the Darkness (AKA Hundred Stories) (pure style with brilliant characters and on the the darker edge of the spectrum; the stories go almost nowhere, but you really won't care)
Honorable Mentions: Gurren Lagann, Mushishi, Ouran High School Host Club, Scrapped Princess, Excel Saga, Pani Poni Dash, Black Lagoon, Trinity Blood, Saiunkoku Monogatari (shut up), and Bakuman (not great, tbh, but I'm in love with the manga)

Edited by: Selinate on 14/12/2010 05:56:26 I've been watching one called "Birdy the Mighty" recently. I think it's one of the better ones that I've watched. funimation.com has videos of it on their website (and they have rights to the series, so no, I'm not posting illegal video links or w/e, ccp).
EDIT: Also, what's this opposition to nudity you have, OP? Is this just an opposition to the excessively silly sexually themed animes, or just nudity in animes in general?

yeah.
if you want to know the story from the start, you really need to go from the beginning.
the oldest series however (SDF macross from the 80's) isn't the "start" tho, since Macross Zero from 2002 is the story's prologue.
Relation chart is all here.
also, be prepared for Macross is quite known to mix space battles with music, so cheesy moments gallore. oh so much music (Plus has one of the best soundtracks, and Frontier is close too) ---

But it never stops being a 'high school' archetype-driven metaseries, so if that's not your thing...
Also, never judge an anime without watching at least a few episodes. -

Yeah there's that, but I wasn't thinking about that so much as series with either poor initial episodes or simply very slow ones. A lot of anime series seem to be paced like movies - they start slow, expecting the viewer to hang around until the end. They don't grab you with the pilot the way most western series do. Also, spoilers! -

I had the entirety of the original Robotech and lost it, for some reason. I was six when I first saw it and loved it, in fact I still remember at one point Rick's eyes are pointing in opposite directions, which was funny.
Originally by: Grideris This thread has nowhere near enough Ghost in the Shell.
Check first post.
Ghost in the Shell is one of the best stories I've ever seen/read.
Akira is also good, but not the anime. I had number 877 of book 6 of the signed copies of the Manga. I really should read the whole story, as it's brilliant and the Manga puts the anime to shame.
Now I'm going to have to look into all these you guys have mentioned. I really do want to avoid series, because I just don't have the time or will power to sit and watch them all.

yes, but both cases shown have like a 540¦ turn on the plot.
there is even more extreme cases like Code Geass, but all in all, best series usually have a slow-paced start, or really don't like like a great series at all from the start. ---

They do, but ScraPrin at least (I'm not familiar with the other one) starts good as well, so judging it (quality-wise) on the first few episodes isn't too bad. There are other series where the style is consistent but the early episodes are weak, and they may put off people who would like it if they gave it a chance. The most extreme example I know of being Noir, which I just watched recently, and which doesn't really get going story wise until about the last 1/3 of the series (26 episodes long).

Yep. Which is why I have learned to always give them time to get going! In fact these days every time I see an opening episode which is slow and doesn't explain anything I start expecting a great series out of it. -

utawamono is good, has nice story and it seems like it's something not bad, till it hits you with a 10-ton hammer and you rethink about the whole series yet again.
thos only happens in the latter 1/3 of the series tho.
also, another slow-paced series but that has soo much win in it is Kemono no souja Erin ---

I have only watched the first disc but I thoroughly enjoyed Ergo Proxy. I think if you play EVE and like Anime then this is a sure win.
It was mentioned in another thread recently, but the Anime adaptation of Seven Samurai, Samurai 7, is also an entertaining watch, but I highly recommend you watch the original Seven Samurai first
Lastly, one I have never seen listed that I enjoyed was Berserk.

No they replayed the new one intermitanly with the old. This time in the correct order, they messed up the episodes the first time to keep the plot confusing, it was genius. There is a new movie since I last checked in though.
The TV show follows the books quite well. The next one is do this year. \o/
I love the one with the epic space war, even the NC doesn't have that many ships.
