EVE-RO Corporation website is an EVE Online related fan-site, an experiment of mine, build using HTML5 & CSS3 only. The main focus of the website is the new web technologies and the cool stuff you can do using plain HTML5 and CSS3. No JavaScript is required (or needed) for the animations/effects. As a matter of fact there is no JavaScript on the website except Google Analytics tracking code.
Compatibility: Safariexcellent Chromeexcellent Firefoxno animation/transition/transform Operasome transition/transform no animation IEno support for HTML5 or CSS3 iPadaldo not adapted (most effects are on :hover state) works fine iPhonealdo not adapted (most effects are on :hover state) works fine IGBalmost excellent (as far as IÆve seen only multiple backgrounds on same element doesnÆt work û good job guys)
A complete list of browsers and support for HTML5 & CSS3 can be found here - http://www.findmebyip.com/litmus
MAIN ELEMENTS: planet + atmosphere rotating @ different speeds (all sections) sun changes opacity on hover (all sections) top menu (all sections) tool tip (all sections) targeting effect similar with the in-game effect (about eve, utilities and tutorials section)
Have a look and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoy it building it!

About HTML5
HTML5 is the next major revision of the HTML standard, currently under development. Like its immediate predecessors, HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.1, HTML5 is a standard for structuring and presenting content on the World Wide Web. The Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG) began work on the new standard in 2004, when the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) was focusing future developments on XHTML 2.0, and HTML 4.01 had not been updated since 2000. In 2009, the W3C allowed the XHTML 2.0 Working Group's charter to expire, and decided not to renew it. W3C and WHATWG are currently working together on the development of HTML5.

There is actually some really cool stuff you have in place here, and understanding the technologies fairly well myself I respect the amount of time and effort you must have put into this.
I do want to add however, that while I assume based on your explanation, that this is somewhat what of a "proof-of-concept" it is unfortunately very cluttered and I personally find confusing / hard to use. |

You are right. At first look it is pretty confusing, I will try on a future post to break each main element(effect) and explain it.
Had exactly the same issue when I presented it to my work team.

Although your site looks pimp - this is a good example of why graceful degradation is important - considering a good chunk of the world uses IE.

GD is useful, true, in some cases, aldo this was never my intention.
This is why it's called a experiment with HTML5 & CSS3. I know that all the effects can be replicated using JavaScript and the layout using lots of images (for backgrounds & co) but then again ... If you want quality you can upgrade, right ? :)
Currently I have 2 EVE related websites. Having a closer look on both of the websites statistics IE is somewhere between 5 and 6% of all visitors ... to be really honest 5% it really doesn't worth my time.
Don't get me wrong, I can see your point but in this specific case seriously ...

My thoughts on it? Why dwell in the past... New technology is the way of the future, not the link to the past. :)
Site looks very good, though I will agree there's a lot going on for one screen. Overall though, it looks great, even at 2560 x 1600 resolution (which most fixed width sites seem to struggle with). Certainly wouldn't mind seeing a variable width version though depending on resolution.

Very impressive. If CCP's new site, so we're promised, is half as good I'd be happy.
Keep up the good work.

Thank you guys.
My original idea was indeed to make dynamic width, but there were some issues and didn't had that much time on hand. At one point I might do a GD because I admit it's a petty it only works (for now) in 2 major browsers...
My thought was that GD simply defeats the purpose HTML5 & CSS3 was created ... move the animations/effects away from JS. JavaScript has it's purpose still but not on animations, not any more. At least this is my thought ... I might, in the future rebuild the project for all browsers but it won't be HTML5 & CSS3 ... XHTML / HTML 4.0 will do just fine with JS.

Looks nice. I myself am currently working on a sort of "proof of concept" thingy with HTML5/CSS3. It's real fun to see your websites do amazing stuff all the sudden with just so little work compared to other methods like fiddling around with Jscript or god help me flash (I hat flash, I really do).
One note about the IE though. The thing I'm currently working on will work in IE (probably even in IE6 but I won't put my hand into the fire for that) since i at first create a basic layout that is so simple that it should work everywhere. Than comes the fancy stuff which makes things look awesome that either work or don't. In todays time with so many different browsers cross-browser pixel perfection is a waste of time IMHO. Even if some animations don't look the same in every single browser the important thing is that the website still looks good and of course is usable.
With that theoretically the websites should even work in an old IE6, they'd just look plain ugly. And even if they don't work at all I simply don't care. My target group is tech savy enough to know what makes up a good browser and how to use one including all it's advantages. In that case IE users can suck it because there are way more important things to spent your time on these days. With the number of devices and different screen resolutions (smartphones, netbooks, ultra widescreen, iPad) I personally find it way more important to optimize the website that it works well with the wide range of devices / screen resolutions we got today.
If you're reading this and use IE. GO GET A NEW BROWSER. NOW. OFF YOU GO! ----------------------------- OMG THE SKY IS FALLING! Contract me all your stuff so I can save it! |

While I think the site itself looks awesome it is quite cumbersome to render. Visually appealing, but userability is so-so.

Pretty sure IE 9 (beta) supports HTML 5 and CSS 3, if I remember correctly.

Yep, it does. Some features, not all but it does. Currently I just made a redirect for IE users, will make a proper browser script when I'll have more time.
Soon the transitions/animations/transform will work in Firefox as well (Firefox 4 - Beta)
