Create a new item called a Gate Lock which is purchased on the market. This can be used to lock the mission gates subject to the big bad pirates hacking the Gate Lock. The higher the meta level of the Gate Lock, the harder to hack. The higher the hacking skill of the pirate (whether new or using an existing skill) the less time it takes to hack. Also, have it send out a signal to the user of the lock when somebody attempts to hack it.
Flame away.

lower the boost to lp from low-sec missions to compensate and i'm fine except for the pop-up letting them know it's been hacked

< 1.08 will get you your own private deadspace even outside of null sec. Unravel what this means and the secrets of pve outside of empire get much clearer.
And the signal thing....no. D-scan spam as you run the mission.

No to a popup But I would allow it to appear as a probe in the scanner, changed state listing when it is being hacked. That way the missioners has to pay attention to the screen rather than getting a bigarse message.

Great idea. The illusion of safety is key to more bears in lowsec.
I was thinking it'd be nice in general if gates only allowed a number of ships, equal to twice the size of the mission runner's fleet, through the gate, every 20-60 minutes. Maybe that could be the cheapest lock; just prevents the runner from being blobbed.

Just to clarify, that would be notification on any attempt to hack not on a successful attempt. Notification doesn't have to be a pop-up.
If you're wondering why notification on attempt is better than success for the pirates, consider the following:
If you're a bear in a mission and you get the notification that the lock has been hacked, you're probably going to simply bug out.
On the other hand, if you get the notice that somebody is attempting to hack the lock, you're going to have to decide on whether you want to risk staying and completing the mission. For example, the bear might scan the area and see a single ship and decide that he can survive a kill attempt long enough to finish the mission even if the ship gets through. What the poor bear doesn't realize is that the hacker has a team waiting elsewhere for the hacking to be successful. By making it a notice on attempt, you get to play greed off against fear.

forget locks how about gate booby traps, anyone who attempts to steal my **** is greeted with a proximity mine so when they warp in they are at half armor and I can just blast away their hull.
