So as I sit here in Bagram battling both jet lag and sleep deprivation...funny how I still have the energy to get some sort of EVE fix before I go to bed (don't judge me, I swear I'm not addicted >.>) I find myself wondering something.
The death of EVE.
And why I said "it's not what you think"...I'm not here to post another whiny thread about it, rather, I'd like to know why so many people swear it's dying, that CCP is killing it.
Personally, I love EVE. I do. And not just because of the eye-candy graphics, how relatively easy it is to get into (for me at least...but then, I did do the tutorial, and that 12-part mission afterwards, like you're supposed to ...and moreso, how you can lose EVERYTHING from a simple mistake, how brutal it is, i.e. you can and will die and all you can do is watch your ship bleed to death...the older age median which means no Mountain Dew-crazed preteens like the ones that infested Xbox Live, the community, the ships and how you can fit them however you like (at your own risk), and so on.
Granted, I've had my share of bad experiences...damn, I really should have listened when they said don't fly something you can't afford to lose? Now what am I going to mission with. Lol...but overall, I love this game. One of the best games I've played and best MMO I've played so far.
So, I ask you this, player community...why the bloody hell are so many people swearing EVE is dying/dead, when we have expansions every month or so? When we have hundreds of thousands of people who play, with the promise of many more with the way CCP advertises (seriously, I've seen an ad for EVE on just about every site I can think of)? How could a game that's showing such promise, potential and longevity possibly be dying?

This is a forum for an online game. Every forum for an online game has trolls. Trolls like to claim the game is dying, just to get a rise out of people...

That's probably what it boils down to. People still bitter that torpedoes got their range nerfed or who demand that 0.0 lag be instantly fixed or who hate Drakes just as much as I do. Or otherwise upset that the game isn't all they want it to be and more.

Everything that's alive will eventually die, and EVE is hardly an exception. But then again, the game world is always doomed, and every little change has some group claiming it was the one thing that made it ruined FOREVER.
People have been predicting its death ever since BEFORE it actually went live, and other than statistically acceptable fluctuations, the userbase has been more or less increasing nearly linearly for at least the past 4 years (it's had its teething problems very early on). When everybody stops crying about EVE dying and all that nonsense, that's when you have to start worrying, because it's a pretty accurate sign we have a dead game walking on our hands by then. _

The latest QENs have these nice graphs with total paid-for accounts from EVE's inception to right before the date the QEN is published.

Edited by: Tarin Adur on 23/12/2010 07:53:12 The old eve(RMR and next 2 or so expansions) we're truly 'fun' for me, after that the game started going downhill fast, to the point that now pvp isn't about skill, or an individuals decisions, but about who has more drakes or can drop more motherships on each other.
Eve isn't dying, but it's a far cry from what it used to be.

then most EVE players really are anti-social nerds (with just one friend that might be interested in EVE for each) because with word-of-mouth you would expect exponential growth or logistic growth if the total market is very small, wouldn't you?

Eve is a drug, many users have injected too many times and will never again experience the rush of their first hot drop, their first solo kill or their first nano hac gang.
Eve is the same drug she has always been, it's just that as vets we are no longer surprised by anything. We see something in intel chat and glance at the the dotlan printout on the wall, we meet the enemy fleet and within seconds of seeing the overview know exactly what we're up against.
Meanwhile that noob in your corp who has not yet scaled the fabled eve learning curve is frantically grabbing screen shots to remind himself of the first time he saw a cap fight, or possibly dealing with the anguish of losing his first T2 cruiser. The noob is the lucky one, he is experiencing the highs and lows that the vet is missing.
It is not eve that is dying, it is a symptom of what I call the 'mid eve crisis'. At about 2 to 3 years old most players go through a depression of sorts, fleet fights are boring and laggy, mission descriptions have been learned word for word and nothing is as bright or fun as it used to be. The eve is dying crowd are almost invariably made up of mid eve crisis characters.
The results of this mid eve crisis vary immensely, often players start their own corps or seek out absurd industrial challenges, carebears start looking for pvp and I've seen anti-pirate mercs become scammers. Most players who are 4 years plus have gone through this and treat today's drake fleets with the same irreverence as yesterdays nano hacs, we will still be here when the drake train has hit the buffers.
My mid eve crisis consisted of hopping between new corps and teaching them how to pvp, it was fantastic reinvigoration for me and a year or two on from that time I love eve as much as I always did, though now it is a second home rather than a place of wonder. A common but rarely mastered route for vets is to become bitter and cynical with a wry sense of humour, for a more full description of this particular condition pick up a dictionary and look up 'Grimpak'.
When you see the phrase eve is dying you should be happy, for it is a sign that a new vet will soon be born.

I started in 2004, and I know for a fact that Eve was dying then.
Eve was on it's last gasp even then. As always, it was due to CCP not doing things the way the thread author in question wanted them done.
My conclusion?
Being warned that a game is on the verge of death by whiny morons actually makes the game better!!
So.....
CCP, MARK MY WORDS! YOU MUST DAILY SCREW OVER THE "EVE IS DYING" WHINERS, AND THUS BUILD A GAME MADE OF PURE AWESOME.
Play nice while you butcher each other.

Bumping the first ever post desiring a discussion on removing tech 2 bpo's(assuming it wasnt locked due to inactivity haha yea right) with concerns over their validity in the game is legit. Spamming endlessly with new posts all the time spewing the same old crap over and over again is a whine my good sir.

You get served a lot of Eve ads because you visit Eve related web sites and do Eve related searches. If you spent your internet time focused on some other activity, you would tend to see a lot of ads directed to that other activity.

Eve is not a game. It is...
a sandbox... a space simulation... a social network... a cult... a man cave...
The only consistancy in EVE is the ability to get exciting at exactly the same moment the wife wants me to do something.
