Outside perspective from an American in Scandinavia.
Psycho Finnish Christmas songs.
Sika, se kuulan kalloon saa Sika, sen seta teurastaa Sika, ja seta verta juo Sika, se joulumielen tuo.
Loosely translated:
Pig, it gets a bullet in the skull. Pig, the uncle slaughters. Pig, then uncle drinks the blood. Pig, it brings the Christmas spirit.

Bullet in the skull ? That's so much more "humane" than what our guys do to pigs around here... pin'em down and slice their jugular just right so their heart keeps pumping all the blood out until the pig dies from severe blood loss. _

Sorry, the Finnish are not related to vikings... We emigrated from somewhere around Siberia long ago, and thus don't share much genes with the rest of Europe.

Wasn't commenting on differing methods of procuring pork - it was more a comment on relative cultural preference for 'Christmas music.' I wonder if the Finnish schoolchildren perform this at their Christmas pageants. That would be kind of cool, as long as you weren't the one forced to dress as the pig.

Sika is a relatively old(1980), but still very popular pop song. You could consider it a traditional alternative christmas song and everyone knows it. Christmas pageants have more often traditional christmas songs, with the typical christmas themes and they consist from a good mix of religious and non-religious songs. Some of them are just local versions of familiar american christmas songs, like Petteri punakuono-Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Pig
Our x-mas celebration starts already on May At that time the pigs have the delicatessen in their mouths, it gets fatter it grows bigger, it grows stronger And come the November and children's singing goes like this: it is no doubt the star of the x-mas
Pig - it takes a bullet in its head Pig - nice man will slaughter it Pig - and nice man will drink its blood Pig - and it brings the X-mas spirit
I looked at the lying boar in the pig sty With a painful expression, with a swelling stomach At X-mas I don't remember the pig Only ham I slobber after and children's singing goes like this: it is no doubt the star of the x-mas
Pig - it takes a bullet in its head Pig - nice man will slaughter it Pig - and nice man will drink its blood Pig - and it brings the X-mas spirit
X-mas is full of ham, bacon, shank, fat, neck and, of course, vodka When the X-mas is over and the night set in Then is the man what he eats
Pig - it takes a bullet in its head Pig - nice man will slaughter it Pig - and nice man will drink its blood Pig - and it brings the X-mas spirit

Above translation is partially incorrect and is missing about 1/2 of the actual song: whole lyrics Even that translation has parts which are translated incorrectly.
1. JouluntShti l. 'star of Christmas' refers to both the one in top of the Christmas tree and the the star of Bethlehem while also having a literal meaning of indicating the pig being a main star of the show.
2. Sika, kun sitS suolataan (pig, while it's being salted) Sika, yhdessS kuolataan (pig, we slobber (it) together) Sika, ja isi mielellSSn (pig, and dad likes to) Sika, on vesi kielellSSn (pig, drool it)
Sika, lopulta tappoi sen (pig, was finally killed) Sika, ympSrist÷ vatsanhappoisen (pig, by the gastric environment) Sika, voi kuinka isi sy÷ (pig, oh how daddy gorges) Sika, isiltS loppuu vy÷ (pig, daddy's now running out of belt)
Anyway those are supposed to in (true)passive which English doesn't have and (partially) because Finnish also lacks future tense. Also I'm no song writer so don't ask me how are you going sing that song in English with those words.

Juice Leskinen (RIP) is a rocksinger and lyricist known for his controversial and parodic songs. Sika (Pig)is a popular christmas song in Finland, but as it has been pointed out most of us still tend to sing/listen to more "behaving" songs like M.A. Numminen's Joulupukki puree ja ly÷ (Santa bites and hits) here

Dunno because we always have a star only swedes and other weirdos would put anything but a star on top the Christmas tree.

My colleague, Rakshasa Taisab, is referring to Suomi people, who look very different from the Europeans who went viking.
And for proper slaughter of pigs, you need a this Suomi Model 1931:

Omg. Someone actually properly using the word viking, as in the verb to go viking.
Someone with more then a hollywood understanding of history on my eve online
@ the OP if you live in scandinavia and think the finns were Viking you pretty much fail at understanding the history of your place of residence.

Edited by: Herr Wilkus on 25/12/2010 20:45:21 Yes, I understand the Finns aren't Vikings. From what I understand, the jury is out on whether or not Finland is 'Scandinavia'.(Person who said that wasn't the OP, BTW.) I merely implied they are barbarians.
Need more evidence? Killer Demon Santa in the new Finnish movie Rare Exports, anyone?

Finland is a nordic country, however loosely defined that is but it's not Scandinavia, that is the scandinavian peninsula, Norway and Sweden and Denmark added.

I shot a boar once in the side of the head with a .357 Magnum. Hit the eye boss, the thick part on the side.
The boar then got really angry, tried to kill me, the hounds, and the houndsmen. I had to stab it to death with a knife.
Marinated in cola and Jim Beam for two days, it tasted great.
Lesson: use a rifle.

A friend of mine told me, metal is mainstream music in Finland. Apparently their idea of "elevator music" is not James Last, but Napalm Death.
Dunno if that's all true though. But reading the op, it might be.

Close call whether I'd call metal mainstream music, but yeah, it's a lot more popular here in Finland than in most places.
Here, it has happened that people win X-Factor / American Idol format competitions with a strong focus on singing metal. Also, the one time Finland won the Eurovision song contest, it was weird people in monster suits singing metal. |
