Edited by: AtheistOfFail on 26/12/2010 11:34:09 I thought about this for a while so here's what I'm thinking. This will be a no-limit stakes game that is only played on the forums. The deal is very simple.
You can bet any amount (multiples of 1m ISK if possible) on whether the server will start up correctly or incorrectly. Bets will take only 23 hours to be decided (since it's a day to day operation). Your winnings will be contracted directly from Jita 4-4 as soon as a decision has been made. I will be overseeing the bets but the simple idea is as follows.
If a post regarding any extension of server uptime is put up on the EvE forums, the people betting on the "Failure" side will win the bet as long as the server does not start up in time. If server starts up at the correct time, with no problems, the "Sucess" side will will win the bet.
Now time for some math. In order to decide the amount you win i have come up with very nice formula.
Your winnings = (Your amount/ Total amount of winning side) x (total ISK wagered by both sides - 5%)
In theory you will get your percentage out of the total ISK - 5%
Example: 10 people play for 200m total. Your side bet 5m total. The rest was put on the opposite side. You wagered 1m and you win.
Your winnings = (1m / 5m) x (200m - 5%) Your winnings = 0.4 x ( 190) Your winnings = 76m ISK.
After i can get some proper API tracking going, i will probably link it to a daily ticket tracker with different reason codes or something. For now i will be preparing a forum ticket list. This drawing will be for tomorrow's downtime since today's has already begun.
All ISK for the lottery should be sent to AoF Lotteries Corp. Check the corp's CEO. If it's not me, you're sending it to the wrong place. Reason codes should be "sucess" or "failure". No quotes.
PS: ISK must be sent before 10:59 UTC time. Any later and it is considered for the next round. PSS: Server shutdowns do not count as "Failures", this is only a bet on the 30 minutes downtime cycle.

What if the server starts up late without a post? What if an announcement is put up but the server starts up on time anyway?

1) I'll be closely monitoring the server uptime plus I will base myself off the graph here. I will be checking it and the client itself at 1 minute intervals. If the server is 1 minute late, the bet is considered "Failed". If there was a better option that would give me the exact time, i would use it, but i have yet to find anything so far.
Also, i have modified the statement, instead of just a post it is now based just on start-up time.
2) The real start-up time is what is being looked at. But usually the post is put up after DT has passed as more of a damage control.
PS: I will be considerable on this so it's not gonna be just a blind bet. If a post is put up but the server is online in time, I will honor the bet as is. PSS: Today's server downtime went off without a hitch, but will tomorrow's?

2/5 is 0.4 though. That was the original example. But since i had said 1 million ISK multiples. I tried to change it after Copy-pasting. Thanks for pointing that out.

What if we spell "success" correctly in our reason code box?

The node crashes.
PS: The bet is NOT YET active. I don't want to have to post proof every day so i'm asking a friend to code something that will querry the server at 10:31 UTC time and see if the node is online. The results will be posted on an easy-to-read page.

Small point... downtime is 1100 - 1130 UTC. Querying the server at 1031 will always return a positive unless the server is undergoing maintenance. I am still struggling to see how this works. Would a sweepstake be a better solution?
Get everyone to post a time when they think the server will return to service, first one to guess the correct time wins.
