Whats the minimum resolution to run eve? I'm on holidays and I took my netbook with me hoping to be able to just set skills to train, but I can't start it, and my prefs.ini is almost empty with no information in it to manually change settings. My resolution is 1024x600, is it simply too low?

I would guess that your netbook just does not have the graphical capability to run Eve. Sorry.
I hope you set a long skill before heading off on holiday!

Dx11 should allow the intel chips to use the CPU to process 3D images, this should allow my arom cpu to be used as a gpu as well.

Somewhere in the knowledge base are the minimum requirements, and I think Hardware Textures and Lighting, as well as Shader Level 3 are requirements, so unfortunately it may not be possible to run it.
I have a notebook (good CPU) with one of the older Intel GMP cards and it barely runs. The thing overheats like crazy if I try to get out of the station; I literally run the risk of burning by notebook running it.
So be careful.

Atm its shadermodel 2 required but they are considering moving it up to 3

Windows Minimum System Requirements as listed on Commissioned Officer Edition box:
OS: Windows XP Service Pack 2 / Vista / 7. CPU: Intel Pentium or AMD @ 1.5GHz RAM: XP (SP2) 1GB; Vista/7 1.5GB HD Space: 10GB Video: 128MB Shader Model 3.0 Graphics Card such as GeForce (7 series) class card or higher, ATi x1000 series or higher and similar chips from other manufacturers. Network: Broadband internet connection. Drivers: DirectX 9.0c and latest video drivers. DVD-ROM: 2 speed DVD reader or greater required.
Yes, it does list 3.0 as the minimum shader model version. Evidently they planned the box for the future or something.
I'm guessing that netbook has a crap GPU that can't even do SM 2.0 and CPU emulation likely would result in unacceptable performance. Maybe it's a low-end model not designed for real gaming?

Edited by: Kahega Amielden on 27/12/2010 20:22:01 There's an application for nvidia GPUs that 'forces' a lot of settings including shader model version... You could use it to at least start up programs that normally wouldn't be able to due to SM compatibility (among other things).
I don't know if such an application exists for whatever GPU your netbook has (if it even has one...) but in theory it's possible.

TL;DR: Graphics cards with ShaderModel 3.0 support will become the minimum required graphics cards to run EVE Online at a yet-to-be-announced date in Q2 2011.

If you knew anything about netbooks, you would probably know that netbooks with actual GPUs are rare and a pretty new thing, and for the most part useless, since even with a decent mobile GPU, you lose so much battery life and gain so much weight, which is the whole point of netbooks, to be small, portable, lightweight and light. Also netbook gaming, seriously, I'm not even going say anything to this.
And I'm not relying on my netbook, I have possibilities to use desktops and real laptops here so it's not a problem ;)

I know almost nothing about netbooks, except they suck at the primary thing I do with my computer: play games. I don't even like laptops, as they suck at gaming compared to desktops.
I wasn't the one trying to play EVE on a netbook. ----- Marcel "M'pact" Paquet Has greater M'pact than a planet-killing asteroid strike. |

You can run pretty much everything security related with the exception of quick Brute-Forcing.
My next laptop will have a discreet graphics card, and I plan to install Linux and a cracker that uses the graphics card for extra muscle.
