Hey I have a grave situation. There's this research corp I want to access L4 research agents from. Problem is, this corp has no L3 or L4 agents in hi-sec. Only one high quality L2 agent is in hi-sec from which to grind standings. How long (ballpark) would it take to access the corp's L4 research agents by doing his missions?
I'm doing his missions in a cruiser and am also about 9 days away from a cov-ops frigate for the random courier mission he gives in the lo-sec systems.
Also I have max standings-gain social skills. I just don't have the LP-gain social skills like political/military/hi-tech connections skills, but that shouldn't matter from a standings-gain point of view I'd guess.

Unless it's an alt, it's usually easier to access them using faction standings. However to avoid this being a walkover research agents usually have two standings requirements: a normal one and a specific corp one, for which faction standings won't do. The corp one is much lower than the general one but still high enough to be a pain.
There's nothing really to be done but grinding the standings, or having someone grind them for you. For this reason I often suggest someone do their early missions with a research corp, as it will pay dividends later.

Ah ok that's good to know about the different weighting of faction/corps for research agents, ty.
This character has essentially been a sleeper who just logs in to update skills. He has XXX Starship Engineering 5, RPM 5, and Electronic Engineering 5, just started him on my race's cruiser skills and my endgame with him is to finish decent cruiser skills then finish with researching/POS skills.

You'd be surprised how often this situation comes up ...
I am assuming that what is going on here is that the normal L3 & L4 agents are in Lo Sec - but - the Research Agent you wish to use is in Hi Sec. Right?
When I was faced with that situation I just kept grinding standings with the L2 agent I had access to until I got the standings I needed.

Unless you've got access to top notch mission ships that can power through level 4's at high speed you're best grinding lvl 2's. The time it takes to complete a level four mission means that the increased standing gain isn't worth it.
How long it takes you to grind standings will vary depending on your ship setup and combat skills, it can however be roughly defined as 'long enough to make your eyes bleed'. There's no real getting round this, you just need to do it.
Originally by: Eternal Noob I'm doing his missions in a cruiser and am also about 9 days away from a cov-ops frigate for the random courier mission he gives in the lo-sec systems.
I'm assuming from this that your character has fairly low combat skills? Assuming that you're flying caldari it's worth splashing out on a navy caracal, you can always sell it again when you're finished grinding.
[Caracal Navy Issue, pve] Internal Force Field Array I Nanofiber Internal Structure II Ballistic Control System II Ballistic Control System II
10MN Afterburner II F-90 Positional Sensor Subroutines, Targeting Range Phased Weapon Navigation Array Generation Extron Phased Weapon Navigation Array Generation Extron Large Shield Extender II
Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile Heavy Missile Launcher II, Scourge Heavy Missile
Medium Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I Medium Warhead Flare Catalyst I Medium Warhead Rigor Catalyst I
Hobgoblin II x3
The extra launcher on a CNI allows you to group your launchers as 3/3 or 4/2 and kill two things at once, it warps fast and has got plenty of range so you don't have to waste time traveling.

I wold say scout a bit and find out how busy the system where the lvl3/lvl4 agent lives in are. Maybe they are not that busy to start with. Maybe there are other people living there that wold like to team up to defend againt piwats. Maybe there is a local corp/alliance 'holding' the space and you can negotiate ascess/protection.

OP, your question is vague. It would help more if you had specified which research corp that you're talking about to give folks that are helping with the answers a clearer idea on the what/why for the said question. Although there's only a handful of research corps and I personally won't bother looking up each one to confirm your statement regarding no L3/L4 agents. What sort of agents exactly?
The ballpark to get a character from 0.0 to around 6.7-7.0 standing is roughly ~100 L3 kill missions. Note the following however :
* the character is not pulling any of its own mission nor do any storylines * the mission's owner Social skill >= 4
It's basically 10-15 hrs worth of grinding at an avg (7-10 L3 kill) missions/hr. Now if you plan to do only L2s, it's probably a safe bet that it'll take almost twice as long. The grinding can be shortened if the character in question starts pulling its own mission once he can access the L2/L3 agent(s), but that'll ruin your corp's faction standing if you need to maintain it for a high-sec POS.
The (fairly obscure) math behind the % standing you receive per mission :
http://www.newedenlibrary.net/eon/standings.shtml
As you can see the factors that come into play are : Agent quality, Agent Level, NPC Corp size and Social Skill. An interesting exercise, deriving the NPC Corp size constant from the mission logs shows the following pattern of values.
Huge : 0.8, 0.9, 1.0(?) Large : 0.6, 0.7 Medium : 0.4 (?), 0.5 Small : 0.2(?), 0.3(?) Tiny: 0.1(?)
tl;dr If it's a tiny NPC corp, you'll gain standings a lot faster.

Oh this gives me good idea of how long it will take, generally 4ever . But without giving out the corp, I'm serious that there are no L3 or L4 missioning agents in hi-sec. Not Personnel, Public Relations, Security, nothing at all. Except they have that one good quality L2 Security agent. That is all. I'm on the long road now..
