I have never used them or seen them used so forgive the ignorant question.. but... how exactly do they work? For example Defenders.. do you have to target the incoming missles? Do you have to hit the 'fire' button whenever you see an incoming missle? The rate of fire seems pretty high using defenders so do you only need one defender launcher?
And on smartbombs, umm,,, I don't even know what question to ask here. Maybe I will just have to play with smartbombs a little.

If you fire your Defender Missiles with targets in range (i.e. enemy missiles), they'll home in automatically on that missile, hopefully destroying it before it hits your ship. You don't have to target anything with them. You can opt to fire them manually or set the launcher on autorepeat. It will then fire as long as there are targets in range and missiles to fire. I've only used one launcher at a time for my Defenders, don't think you need more.
I've never used smartbombs myself, so someone else please fill in.

You set smartbombs going and they'll hit anything within their range, including gang members, stations etc, so be careful where you activate them.
They hit everything, the range and damage depends on the size and type.

it's actually quite an easy decision:
(1) smartbombs are good for taking out close range 'rats and missiles IF YOU DON'T HAVE A MISSILE SLOT
(2) missile slots are GREAT! ______________________ Best darned links ingame and out (backup) |

Smartbombs use capacator but aside from that have infinite uses. Their damage range is about 5,000m in every direction of your ship.
Defender missiles are a bit pants; they don't work exactly as you'd expect. If there are 3 missiles on the way to you and you launch 10 defenders, they will all go for the first missile. If that missile is successfully killed or hits your ship, all your other defenders that are still in space will not go for the next enemy missile. They will fly around in circles and then explode. ------------

Oh thats just lovely.  So if you have 6 incoming missles your gonna be fumbling around for your smart bombs.

Yes mac, but I've never done it. Apparently they need good timing, so lag is bad. Also, smartbombs hit your drones, and any innocent people nearby, which will bring the concord smackdown if you're not careful.
If the enemy is quite far away I would prefer to use defenders, and if they are close I don't think you have much of a choice but to tank or run. ------------

Heh, don't joke, I done that before at a rogue drone complex, was firing off a couple of smarties and firing missiles at the same time, when i discovered I was blowing up my own missiles I felt like a right plum...  -----------------------------
