Now everyone can train the same skills, when having them at 5 everyone is like everyone else, there are no unique, individual skill-sets.
I'd love to see rare skill-books, that drop maybe 5 a day or are extremely expensive, to create more diversity and means of character skill customisation. They should have small effects for long training time, to avoid a greater imbalance. For example a rank 10 skill, that boost armor or shield by 1% each level and is a rare drop from a rare rat or a one-time pirate faction standing reward or can be traded for 10000000000 tritanium, wormhole stuff or whatever.

Would this make EvE better or just different? It's a matter of opinion, sure. In my opinion, unless you have all 4 Races Titan 5... you still have skills to train.

Edited by: 0oO0oOoOo0o on 30/12/2010 11:12:33 One of the most common reasons to quit an MMORPG is when a character can't improve anymore. In the WOW-type games that's usually when he reached the level cap, got the best possible gear, achieved this and that. In EVE it's when he maxed out the SP for the ships he uses.
And no, it is not advancement or progression to train a titan skill to 5 when you already have one such skill at 5. The constant improvement and progression is a vital reason that keeps people playing in the long term. When they "seen it all" and can't get any better, the chance, that they move to another game, is much higher than when there is still room to improve and become stronger (even if that's small and difficult). So yes, it will make the game better for the vets. Keep the benefits low, and there won't be big disadvantages for the non-vets, that have other skills left, which give them more power per invested SP.

No, never. Vets can already use officer fail fits, which can be destroyed. If they were able to get an advantage without anyone being able to take it away from them it would be screwing everyone in the process. One of the best things about eve is that a newbie can quickly catch up with a vet in certain area. Vets can only use more of things, if they want an advantage with things that newbie has trained for, they have to invest a lot of money and put it at risk.

I don't think this is one of the best things. It has some importance, sure, but the additional skills I'm asking for are minimal advantages for a high cost in ISK and training time. A soft cap (with diminishing returns per invested skill training time) instead of a hard cap which specialised players hit in something over a year. And then we have the situation that i described in post #3: the lack of improvement that makes people quit. You did not rebut post #3.

tl;dr: I have run out of skills to train that I think are useful.

Although you make a valid point that "what more is there to do when you've reached the top?", eve is much more than this. In the typical mmo such as WoW, yes, your amount of fun decreases once you hit that "can't go further" barrier, and about the most that they can do at that point is sit and have a good time with friends, guild mates, etc, or pvp.
EvE is unique and veers off this philosophy a slight bit but maintains a little bit. In eve your not bound by chance drops to get to the top (although its still timely to get all the skills that even touch the stats of your ship all to 5). I believe you've lost sight of why you trained those skills to 5 i nthe first place. Its so you can fly your ship as efficiently as possibly and get all the enjoyment out of it (before it goes splode) Furthermore, you also get to have fun with your friends, corpies, and generaly sit and enjoy the game as a whole. Technicaly there is no roof in eve as you can always be making more isk and be buying more expensive things. There is no end-all-be-all here. The phrase "mmo" is there for a reason, enjoy the company, and its a game, just sit enjoy the content already.
Tl:DR version: Eve unlike other mmos isn't about hitting the top, its about the content and interactions(people) which all make the game whole. The skills although important, aren't the main show here.

EVE is not about rushing to the end-game to collect gear that everyone else is collecting.
EVE is about interacting with other players, building empires, blowing stuff up, and simulating a science fiction universe.
What makes your character unique and special is you.

This idea might have merit if these rare, slightly effective, and long-training skills were subject to some random loss chance, upon podding; like t3 skills in a t3.
Or maybe they're just super rare, and only work in Alliance Tournaments.

Having rare skillbooks which would ultimately end up as just another commodity for trading between the wealthiest players thus helping them to maintain their uber status wouldn't solve anything imho.
Instead, what if each character had a latent natural ability that wasn't even obvious to the player until they reached level 5 with a particular range of skills that was unique to them. This could enable the player to train some skills an additional level or two beyond level 5 based on natural ability, thus making every player even more unique.
Being able to train all skills to level 5 simply by putting the time in is not how real world knowledge works.
