Everyone wants engine trails, but why doesn't CCP want to add them again? Does it cause a lot of lag?

same reason recoil was removed from guns. to reduce lag. lag remained, CCP failed.

Performance issues is something that might have been said was the reason, although IIRC engine trails could be turned off anyway, but that is a client side problem and has nothing to do with lag.

Didn't they say it was something to do with an upgraded effects system which the old engine trails weren't compatible with?
Either way, bring them back! ---

As you say .. why isnt it just another toggle in the display config? Most people would have them set off anyway.
Heck they could even let you set the length/particle density etc to suit.

from what I can recall the reason engine trails were removed are because the new engine didn't allow them to be added very easily but I believe they are working on new ones using the same stuff that makes the new fighter bombers missiles (the server treats those missiles as turrets the graphics engine makes missiles and explosions for it)

They got removed because they had a huge performance hit under Scene2 (new Trinity engine), even with high-end parts. They said they'd be back when they had time to do it in a manner that didn't reduce performance for everyone. ---

The new hamsters can't render engine trails. They are in the process of being trained though.

Engine trails never looked good. They might have done if they were nice and smooth but they were always laggy and jerky; a ship jerking around would produce jerky trails which stayed there for a while reminding you of the lagginess, rather than instantly being over so you could begin to forget what you just saw.
Plus they were stupid. You are not flying the red arrows on an airshow over the coast, you are flying huge space ships. What sci fi has ever had engine trails? Why don't you attach some pretty ribbons too?
I turned engine trails off the day after i booted eve in 2004 and didn't even notice they were removed. If you want engine trails go play homeworld.

They detracted from the realism of the game, I'm glad they're gone. Also, iirc they sometimes came out of the ship at ridiculous angles, especially in tight orbits.

Because SB, turret firing, ECCM, etc. effects are not stupid? Let me clue you in: engine trails provided a visual indication of the ship's movement vector.
And they did look good and need to come back. ...

To be honest, I was quite glad when they were taken out - but it did surprise me that they didn't just make it an option... since it's all client-side, and shouldn't impact lag.

I think the problem was that the fact they wherent client side and couldnt move them to client side. Im sure once they figure it out how to do that and make the effects either range or optional they'll re impliment them. Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 1SEPT10

The sparrow that pecks at the other sparrows when they eat told me it was because they heard players liked engine trails and the needed to stir the pot with another issue that would **** people off for no reason to deflect from the many other things they did wrong by 'accident', don't do and so on.
