This is not a whine, so please spare the rudeness, I just seek wisdom.
I was killing belt rats with my Caracal crusir ship in a low security system. I failed to pay attention to the local screens. This is my fault, so for this I am not whining.
A fellow in a nighthawk command ship? came to find me, and killed me.
My question is simple, did I ever stand a chance, could I have somehow through tactic or skill killed him, or was I doomed from the moment he scrammed me?
Just trying to learn..............
thx

The Nighthawk Command Ship is a Tech2 variant of a Battlecruiser.
Battlecruisers are very good at destroying Cruisers, similar to how Destroyers are very good at killing Frigates, because they have more of the same-sized weapons fitted and superior fitting resources for a much better defense. A command ship is even better at that than is a Battlecruiser. Aside from quick reaction time on your part, you did not have much of a chance. You already realize that you should have been watching Local, so I won't harass you about that. In short, a Caracal will not usually have a good chance against a Nighthawk barring extenuating circumstances.

depends on how the NH was fitted. He's a shield tanker so chances are if his not a bad pilot he wont have a long point and a web as these take up valued mid slots, so he would probably have a scram. so your best bet for survival would be to have an afterburner fitted instead of a MWD, get out of his scram range and warp off. Other then that your pretty much boned.

That would really have been a fight to be avoided.
As you say you failed to keep an eye on local and I guess wasnt using the D/scan.
Eve tends to teach harsh lessons and the loss of your ship should be considered a learning experience.
While ratting in low sec you need to check the activity in an area, keep eyes on local and your directional scanner. Have a couple of safe spots to run too and no matter the sec status of anyone who enters the system assume the worst.
People may tell you that you will make more money missioning in high sec, however you will become a far better pilot doing what you are doing and hell a little danger is more fun yea

Given the amount of health you have and the amount of damage a Nighthawk does, you were almost certainly dead unless he warped in too far away to scram you for long.

Basically, the nighthawk has the same weapons as you.
Only a pilot who can fly one is much more skilled in them than you, and probably has better ones equipped, and since it's a tech2 battlecruiser he has more of them.
EHP wise he has an advantage probably on the 5 or 10:1 scale.
There's really nothing you could have done, except had an MWD fitted and burned away (you are probably faster), then warped off once you got out of warp disruptor range. Fighting is futile.
There's no amount of skill that can overcome a disadvantage like that, unless the nighthawk fails terribly (IE doesn't even fit a tank and has terrible damage or is afk or something.)
Very few tech1 cruisers can stand a straight fight with a battlecruiser. The caracal is not one of them. Your only mistake was getting tackled. |

you could purpose-fit a caracal to tank a nighthawk, but there is absolutely no way you could come up with enough damage to kill one. maybe if you had a cyno fit, and dropped a carrier, but why you would choose a shield tanking ship as hotdrop bait, and why you would drop a carrier on a lone nighthawk... that's the kind of shenanigans i used to get into.
there aren't a lot of ships that are capable of killing command ships 1v1, at least not in the realm of subcaps. they pack a whole lot of tank into a very small package. while generally commands are not outrageous in terms of dps, their tanks are superb pretty much across the board. be careful, it's a jungle out there. -+- derp.

To paraphrase everyone else, you're a hamster, he's a cobra, unless he's drunk to the point of being comatose, you're screwed. However, on the positive side of the ledger:
i/ even though you're new, you ventured into lowsec and ii/ you ain't whining about about getting killed but rather trying to improve it for next time.
...so you're off to a pretty good start I reckon.

First, thank you all for the much needed advices.
Now, this comment has me intrigued.
I am working to understand the various ships in the game.
How could I accomplish the above? Would I not need to know which missiles, and therfore which specific damage, for which to tank?
Or am I again missisng something obvious.
Simply to survive such an encounter would be for me a win, to be honest.

Edited by: Sorted on 03/01/2011 02:10:38 EC-300s *2 and pray. Or MWD + Overdrives. or risk an embarasing loss mail and fit two stabs + ECM burst.
Or get a falcon alt.
Or if you want to kill it, get an Arazu alt, Tackle + damp it, break range with the caracal and hope hes not passive fit and a friendly is bringing you more ammo..
If you wanted to fit to solo it, you'd need to know it wasnt a passive fit, and keep outa its range. - so either stop it locking (ecm, chance based) or reduce its lock distance, while keeping a long rang point on it and pouring in the damage, while managing your cap, tackle range and EW. Would be tough though. If it turns into a straight up slugfest your screwed (his damage and tank is better)
Good luck.

Someone actually asked how to kill stuff, instead of whining. No point to ridicule the OP then. - I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |
