I haven't really been watching the MMO market. I think WoW came out with goblins? I'm not sure what the expansion was about. Also, Black Prophecy was supposed to be due out soon. World of Tanks is basically in Open Beta as you can get a free key from shattered crystal. What happened to that Star Wars game? I think it is due out april?
What game currently or in the near future do you think will compete with eve the most? How well do you think EVE stacks up on the MMO market?
Does EVE's expansions qualify as expansions on this market? New character portraits and more red crosses compared to what else is out there?
Is CCP doing a good job at keeping up with the market? What do you think.

Whoa, I used to play Planetside a lot. Even after BFR's I used to be a mosquito and reaver pilot. I can't believe their coming out with another one. Wonder if it'll live up to the memories I think it created with a lot of people.

Sadly the MMO market looks a little bit worse than a ******ed 4 year olds finger painting, this is clearly not attractive to anyone with mental age greater than 3. Sadder still the second group of people make up 98% of the MMO market and will throw their money at WOW and its clones.
Planetside Next if it ever gets released will probably be good but won't be competing with eve as they are of different genres.
The SWG emulators are coming along but unfortunatly, they are starting to age a bit, but for me are still one of the best non-eve progressions in the MMO market atm, impressive considering its age.
So no, I can't see any big games that will be competing with eve in the next 5 years, although I'll gladly be proven wrong, once again the gaming industry proves quality has absolutely no bearing on success. Untill a larger number of players are willing to spend money on something that isn't linear and grindy I doubt we will see many good games being released |

I am keeping an eye on:
Black prophecy Tribes Universe Firefall
I couldn't care less about: Jumpgate: whatever World of Tanks Star wars: thingamy plot mcguffin
But I don't think any of them are likely to be an eve killer. Just look at the debacle that was star trek online. That was supposed to, like, challenge eve or something. Its pretty much imminently going to go F2P, and crash horribly in a few years time.
Black prophecy might manage to hold its own by virtue of being F2P from release, but jumpgate looks fairly insipid. Tribes universe and firefall are both Tribes-style combat games, and I loved tribes. World of tanks lacks a lot of variation, or so I am told and star wars is not the well thought of franchise it used to be.
The challengers will be black prophecy and starwars, the latter purely because bioware can afford to bankroll it for a while.

Edited by: Jasdemi on 01/01/2011 14:52:21 Black Prophecy is pure crap. Everything is instanced. It's just some arcade space game with online features. Will be filled with 12 year olds who don't have enough money to pay for a proper p2p game.

for me new mmos that have promise to take some of my time would be:
planetside 2 - loved the original star wars - fnnngh its star wars guild wars 2 - no sub fees and pretty graphics please me black prophecy - looks really really nice but its still a bit rough around the edges from what ive seen
ccp currently keep up with the mmo market quite well because even now, even with the list above they have no real competition. They do a good job all things considered but have a tendancy to move VERY slowly and do not seem to follow (to us players anyway) much of a desire to polish the game as it stands, preoccupied as they are with the bigger picture rather than resolving small irritations that nibble away at (my) will to play the game over the years.
unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) until they have direct competition it will be impossible to gauge how they are performing. ============================ 2003 and still alive! |

Actually I think Planetside Researves might still be available. You know the free trial. And come to think of it a month ago this guy was talking about he still plays it and it's so going along even now. So I'm going to check that out. Maybe ask them about planetside 2

This.
Its a fun game, but it most certainly won't kill eve. Its a different type of game completely.

The mmo market has dried up to new customers, most people who would have been a newcomer were guided into world of warcraft and turned into zombies or the idea of online gaming was killed by the aweful image that has presented.
in a nutshell, wow killed mmo.

Unless you're referring to an emulator, its going to be a WOW-clone.

free to play and generally looks terrible
I can't believe the first things people look at on games are like 'ooh cut-scenes' or 'oooh nice graphics' or 'i can be luke skywalker'. Not Fully customisable characters, player driven economies and open world pvp (that actually involves real loss). If anyone can name some games that do anywhere near as well as eve when it comes to these core elements I'd like to know about them. |

I'm beta testing Black prophecy right now, and I would say it has some rough spots to iron out, but will be a reasonable F2P zero-G dogfighting MMO.
I think it does not compete in any way with EVE, it's too different. I mean, I use a Xbox 360 controller to play it...
I think you're being a bit harsh on CCP with regards to whether CCP's expansions qualify as expansions in comparison to other companies, I think you need to look at this from another perspective.
I think 2011 will be CCP's finest hour. Quote me on that.

Its never gonna be anything other than a pretty tech demo.
Even if its a completely different genre the only mmo i'm looking forward to is planetside 2.

+1 Its simplicity has ruined the genre, and even single feature is copied from another game.

rift is just another wow button smasher atm, although they have expanded on the class system quite a bit compared to wow, how ever gameplay remains much the same.

I'm in the Beta for Black Prophecy, and I can tell you that this game will not touch Eve. It's got really nice eye candy, ship customization, and first-person ****pit views, but that's literally about it. It's twitch gameplay that is completely instanced. There is no, "I think I'll fly to this planet/station and dock". You basically jump to a small instance for every mission and then when you're done you jump back to your home station for turn-in. When I say "jump", I don't mean a jump drive like Eve; I'm talking the entire screen goes blank and then just loads you up with another "stage". When said "stage" is finished, you just load up the "home stage" by clicking on the jump drive. Basically you can hop around the universe because on the map there are a bunch of different locations and they're all instant. There are no gates, no traversing other space.
It's like Freelancer only not nearly as open or cool. It's fun, don't get me wrong, but it's more like an arcade shooter with slight RPG elements.

I am disapointed by the Black Prophecy beta too. Very nice graphics but its to hard to target small ships. I wish it would be something like X Wing, Tie Fighter and Freespace 2 where there is a mix of different size\class ships in battle. But the heavily instanced BP beta seems false.

I'll be interested to try out starwars MMO but warhammer one will likely suck the big one as MMO with "just combat" isn't exactly fun like warhammer has already proved.
