Edited by: Morphic Figure on 02/01/2011 02:02:37 hey everyone, i have recently being wondering if my computer is really up to date enough to be playing eve... i have some spare money to buy some new parts but i dont know what needs updating ect.. im not really what you would call computer literate So here are my current specs: Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2GHz Graphics card: ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Series RAM: 958MB DirectX 9.0
As I've already said, i don't know much about computers, so i don't know when else to list, i think these are all the major parts... if there is anything else you need to know just ask and I'll look it up. Thanks!
Edit: nearly forgot... HAPPY NEW YEARS!

Update the Graphics and add more RAM.

Basically what the person above said
I'd try aim for a minimum of 2gigs of ram: preferably 4 or more if your system was 64bit but I get the distinct feeling it's not 2 Should be a decent enough to run it half smoothly (this computer I'm on now only has 2 and doesn't seem to mind that).
Graphic card is the only other real area where you'll see major improvement right away without having to buy a whole new system - or some of us techies start debating whether an SSD would be worth it

You want at least 2 GB of RAM. And don't go over 4 GB.
To play EVE uou need video card that can do Shader Model/Pixel Shader 3. Here is table that shows what is what: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_shader#Compatibility You can see that you need Radeon X1300 or better, or nVidia 6xxx or better. Basically, any ATI or nVidia card that you can get for 25 dollars from the internets, will do it.

Edited by: Morphic Figure on 02/01/2011 16:20:33 Ok.... so i've been looking around and i have seen some parts, just a new graphics card and a new RAM.
graphics card RAM
I understand i have probably completely overshot what i need, but thats how i like it, will these be enough to play eve on max settings? and im also guessing the processor doesn't need updating? thanks for the help everyone!
Edit: i also see that it has been said that i shouldn't go over 4GB of RAM, is it a big problem if i do? if it is then I'll re-look my RAM choices.

I agree with the above advice, but as an owner of an older PC I have my reservations about your planned purchases, especially since you confess to being computer illiterate. You can't just fit a new part in to an older computer and hope it works. Usually it isn't compatible at all, if there has been a long time between updates. Is you motherboard for example compatible with that RAM. My older motherboard would never support 2000GHz DDR3 memory, so any memory updates I would do would have to include a new motherboard.
Just something you might want to check before spending your money on it.

You are a troll.
First. That video card is for PCI Expess 2.1. You do not have PCI Express 2.1. You have PCI Express 1.
Second. That is DDR3 RAM you linked. Your motherboard takes DDR2 RAM modules. DDR2 and DDR3 modules are not compatible, each type uses its own bracket, DDR3 will not fit into DDR2 bracket.
Note to CCP, I really need that Block-Fu feature, really!

He doesnt have to be a troll.
Just in case - your doing it wrong Morph. -1
Get your motherboard manual and find out what types of memory your motherboard can support and the maximum allowable memory. Also find out what interface it uses for gfx cards (PCI-E, AGP... PCI loler... anyway).
Your system isnt far off my gf old one and we decided it was new computer time after taking into account the jumps in tech since her comp was made over 5 years ago.
Either way you should also update your comps BIOS and drivers to all the latest for your tech, new or old, regularly - at least check.
Good luck and find a mate that can help you out with the updates.

Dude, assuming you are not consciously trying to pull aggro on the forum here, go no further with your computer self-help plans. What you have chosen here will not work with the hardware around your P4, the RAM won't even fit the slots physically, let alone operate proper. Seeing as you were not aware of this, you should not be doing this yourself.
As you were about to spend near 450 pounds on two bits alone, and given the age of your setup, I'd recommend spreading it around for a more even upgrade, as opposed to plugging holes EVE needs plugged. I'd recommend getting a new main board, a modern dual core, 4 gigs of ddr3 ram, and a decent graph card which isn't the latest like you had plans for now. That would yield you an overall highly improved system, as opposed to throwing expensive parts at it that won't attain their abilities because the rest of the system can't keep up (apart from the bits not even fitting :-) )
And ffs, DO NOT do it yourself, have it done by a tech, you clearly do not have the skills. If you are interested in learning, ask to watch the process.

For the ram upgrade, save you going though all the books and manuals try this link
crucial.com
Run the app on that page, it will scan your systems RAM and provide all the details on what RAm you have and if you have any spare slots for it :)

Normally i am all for upgrading instead of buying a new computer. However this one was from somewhere between invention of fire and the wheel. The processor is also hopelesly outdated, new processor means new motherboard (what you most likely need anyway since there is a good chance it doesnt even have pci express). Then we have new ram and GPU, which most likely means new PSU. With quite some GPUs you have a good chance it wont fit in the case, so also a new case.
What is left is your cd-player you can keep. |

Oh common! It is not that bad.
Like another poster said early on, some DDR2 RAM (at least 2 GB in my opinion) and a 30-50 dollar video card is all they need. It already does all the regular things, but with these two upgrades it will do them better and it will play EVE.
