So in about a day I will finally have all frigate skills to 5. I was thinking of returning to RvB, but when last there, I always seemed to be popped quickly. Now that I can fly any frigate, what's probably the best tanking frigate available. For armor I was thinking the punisher, but not sure. For shield, the merlin I guess. For guns, I have T2 small autocannons and arties, and would probably use them over say blasters, lasers, or rails.
So what would people suggest?

40k ehp with slaves, 54k with boosting legion, with more realistic fitting around 35k. If you can get erebus to boost you... Pretty useless but 40k ehp frig is fun efting.
For active tank its hawk and again vengeance.

If you are wanting a useful isk efficient ship to go along with your tank then either a merlin for t1 or a jag for t2.

i say the best frigate for tanking is a passive sheild tanked rifter. one on one is good and the shield recharge rate is good with t1 items. but like everyone said, against a blob, your not gonna last a second.

Hmmmm... the Merlin and Punisher are tanking beasts. :)
First off, ignore the people saying to run away from the fight. Second, ignore the people suggesting faction frigs - they're too expensive for throwing away in RvB. You're going to want a Punisher or Merlin if you're in it for tanking. The Griffin is pure lulz, but I hear that's banned in RvB. The Imicis is pretty amusing if you're into the mini nano ishtar kind of lifestyle, and the Kestrel is pretty ganky these days. And of course the Rifter has always been a good choice because pretty good at everything.

I assume you're wanting to use a t1 frigate.
Although punisher and merlin have the best "tanks", if you're not in a solo/very-small-gang fight then your best tank will be range and speed.
So if you're really keen on surviving above anything else I recommend you get into something zippy - perhaps an mwd nano-rifter with howitzers as a fast-medium-range artillery platform. This would be especially good in RvB where you will be able to apply damage on the next called target without delay. The ability of long range weaponry to apply damage instantly to the primary target (without the need to trundle into range before firing) can make up for the weaker dps.

What Lian said. They work well because of their bonuses, though if you go buffer tank on a Punisher it does turn into a brick, but it takes a bit to kill.
For RvB you might want to look at long point setups and speed. The MWD Kessie can work along with an Arty Rfiter. Both will give you a chance to get away, but sitll be useful in a fight.
If you want to get in and slug it out, it doesn't really matter what you have, when you get primaried you will basically crumble.
You cannot use a Griffin due to the ECM ban, but that doesn't mean you can't use other EWAR. Look at the Cruicifier and you mightbe surprised at what you can do with it. It could just be that the purpose of your life is to server as a warning to others. |

I am surprised not many people have mentioned that you speed tank frigs. Any other tanking ability is secondary ( it is not like your going to make a brick frig).
So speed + buffer. I have tanked a couple of drakes, a nighthawk and two other BC size ships( cant remember what they were now) while webbed in a hawk, though i nearly died on that one after i ran out of cap boosters( i failed to watch my supply as i was scout and bait and got caught up in the moment).
In a frig speed is your best friend. And you second best friend is a buffer.

As a former RvBer...you're best off using a merlin/punisher/kestrel if you don't want to get primaried in frig v frig fights. Rifters/tristans/incursii will get primaried = you die fast. If you're fighting on a station then you'll probably have a cruiser undock on you = you die fast.
Another factor you might want to consider is your skill as a player. Regardless of what ship you're flying if you simply hit "approach" and F1 - F3, then you'll quickly find yourself in the middle of their gang and a common way to call primaries is distance...if you're far away, aligned out ready to warp if needed then you can escape if you see everyone red boxing you & warp back in at range to keep fighting. Situational awareness and not just shooting until you're dead will greatly increase your survivability & success in any form of PVP.

I found the best tank in RvB 'feet' fights to be the range tank, 25km from the action spitting missiles from a kessie, ymmv.
