Hey computer nerds.
I have a 3(?) year old laptop (HP dv6500) that has made a hard drive swirl sound since it was new. Recently the swirl is happening alot more often.
The laptop is working fine. Anything that might be making the hard drive swirl? I assume the swirl sound is the computer hard drive seeking. I ran a hard drive test and the test says my Hdd is fine.
The laptop works fine, just wondering if there is a option that might quiet the laptop.

Run Disk Defragment. It is built in Windows utility. Do it over night, it takes forever.

Pretty much this. If your data is heavily fragmented, your HDD is going to have to work that much harder to access it. Use the Windows Defrag utility or Defraggler (google it). ---

The windows defrag never really worked for me, I use power defragmenter powerdefrag It might also help to clear off old junk from the HDD, especially if its near full.

Ok the thing is...is that my laptop defrag setting says it is automatically scheduled to run every so often...so it auto defrags itself.
I'm downloading the other defrager although I've never had a problem with the built-in windows defrag app.
At this moment its an annoyance, although could be a precursor to hard drive failure...the HDD testing software says I'm fine and its been like this since forever...its just it makes this whoosh sound much more often than I remember it. I only use this laptop to browse the web in the kitchen while watching tv or whatever.
Thx for the replies. ----------------------------------- They see me trollin... |

I tried the powerdefrag and it made no difference.
I'm going to order a new hardrive.
I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to get the operating system off the old hard drive and onto the new hard drive.
The laptop didn't come with any reload cds, instead it has a partition on the hard drive which you select at startup in case you want to reload the operating system.
Is there a way I can burn the operating system on a dvd or usb flashdrive and load it onto the new hard drive? I imagine there is a way. Thx again. ----------------------------------- They see me trollin... |

Edited by: Vogue on 07/01/2011 21:31:47 I would also prefer to do a fresh installation of windows with a new hard disk.

Its the unmistakable sound of a hard drive about to fail. Back up now.

Things don't work that way.
If you get new hard drive that is bigger or smaller than your current hard drive. Than cloning your old drive is not going to work. It might be even worse than that. The new hard drive might need different driver, that will make things even worse.
Here is Plan 1. If your laptop has a sticker from M$ with Windows name and serial number. Than you can use torrent to download that Windows with that name, burn it on CD/DVD and use that for OS disk. When you install the OS, use M$ serial number from the sticker. This way you are legal and everything works as it should.
Plan 2. Find new hard drive that is same model of your old hard drive. Clone your hard drive onto the new hard drive. Reinstall OS from that special partition.
Plan 3. You old hard drive is fine, but cluttered. The rule of thumb is that you have to reinstall Windows Xp every couple of years. Copy your stuff, make sure you have the installers for all the programs you use, make sure you got all the user names and passwords. Reinstall OS from that special partition.
I would go with Plan 3 to start with. The first rule of fixing anything, from toaster to relationship to cars, etc., is this: Don't fix what aint broken! As far as I can tell, nothing is broken, yet.
