It's really groundbreaking stuff. Why not make it a standalone and distribute it? Coupled with a few RL Pics vs Generated Pics (showing uncanny similarity) and it might garner some big media attention, get us some more players etc.
Start a trend of people using their generated face on facebook?

Did CCP really create this, or did they just purchase a license from the creator of the product that allows CCP specific use of it?

It's all CCP they did the research and development for it and the rest of the carbon stuff.

Good suggestion. Not the first time a company has garnered interest in their game with this method. Dragon Age's character creator comes to mind.

Allow people to import the avatar they have made in to the ingame CC, so you can design the character on your own time and not have to waste time doing it again when starting the actual character in game.

This needs to be put up on the right part of the forum so that I can give it one of those nifty little thumbs up. This would be an excellent source of income for CCP, bringing in more money to be spent on making EVE even more enviable
Gets a +1 from me for being a good idea and +100 for being a sensible, reasonable and non whining forum post. Well done you

Also character creator should be sold for 100$ and each time you create character you have to pay another 100$.

A good idea.
On importing out-of-game designs in the game: The character design likely would need to import/export as XML or something like that. Though then it also would need to be proofed for the good, bad and the stupid - while it is "only" cosmetic, it'd still need to check the parameters against someone manipulating the saved design or trying to import corrupt files. (For reference of what I'm talking about, consider the edited saved fittings where an asteroid is apparently fit with GM Death Rays etc.)

The funny thing is of course that's just a portrait generator atm and they're not actually used as characters in the game. It would attract some people but if they found out it's just a 2D face designer tool they'll leave just as quickly.
IF you'd do this (which is a good idea) do it after Incarna is actually gone live, not now. It ramains to be seen how those high quality characters will behave in an environment with more characters and how the animations will be and how the strain on your PC will be if they're walkig across your screen with dozens at a time.

The Incarna character creator actually was made for a different game.
The game it is made for is called World of Darkness.

I saw this when you linked to it from your post on Scrapheap; I guess you know that this was designed for another game, by having played that unreleased game, right?
Sarcasm aside, the new character creation was designed from the ground up for EVE, and was done so using our Carbon framework. All of the characters were designed specifically for EVE, along with their clothes, hair styles, artistic looks, etc. We've always wanted to have full body avatars and this is merely the begining of that.

whats more important is when can i buy the clothing styles characters have. Some of the female amarr shirts would look damn good on my wife, and i would love to get my hands on some of the caldari kit. Add to eve store, k thx :P

Successful dev troll best troll!
But don't you think that minor tweaks to the character models, clothing, and hairstyles would yield dandy avatars for WoD? It seems like the underlying engine would be the smart thing to use for WoD.

Guess what Carbon serves .... the big picture. Build one, use among many. Sharing resources from EVE towards core technologies for consolidation of innovation and research towards readily available usage among products. We're the beta =P
It's why there is so much less unique look and feel for the EVE delivery of it =/ In plenty other games it would look neat, but for EVE it lacks something. It's a bit bland, but who knows, maybe they will spice things properly instead of leaving that for microtransactions for vanity items =)

Edited by: Hesperius on 07/01/2011 19:49:19 Right now CCP has the characters on lock down, the character assets are on the server. I don't know if this will be the case in Incarna. If it is, then we can all sleep well at night knowing that our characters are safe from abuse (poor Zoey from L4D).
That being said it would still be cool to have actual Eve characters staring in videos like Clear Skys.
Overall I'm -1 to the idea if CCP can keep characters locked down.
*if you really dig character creation that much you should look into some 3D modeling & animation apps.

Umm... the character creator isn't bad but groundbreaking it is not.
Go ahead and look up the APB character creator on youtube/google and look at the level of detailed customization we could only dream about here.
Look, I'm not complaining and I'm very happy we are getting what we are getting, but I'm just stating the facts.

Honestly I think Carbon looks a little better.
The customizable features are nice, but most of the extra customizations you see appear to rely on imported graphics for the tattoos, which would need unacceptable server resources and the hair... well, they're working on that.
It'd be nice to have a standalone creator that could import/export settings out of the game. Hell - i'd even like a funny little DNA graphic or something to represent your characters genome :D

CCP must have already thought about doing such a thing, then ruled it out.

Having actually tried APB creator and carbon... The APB one was way easier to use, much easier to get what you actually wanted. The problem is currently, we're going to end up with another "clone syndrome" that we currently have. Where pretty much every character of the same bloodline looks like they're related.
*EDIT*
The graphics are not imported, there are preset shapes that you can use and a layering system that is very similar to photoshop is used. Watch the video again, the "skull tatoo" is created not imported. It took hours, but people did it.
I know I for one spent a good 2 hours working in that character creator to make my character truly unique. It helps that I'm already very familiar with photoshop though.

Care to explain why all the characters, even the black ones, look like modern day scandinavians. What happened to the funky futuristic headgear and masks? What happened to the weird racial characteristics of the Sebiestor or the Amarr? In other words, you people have spent an inordinate amount of time on crap that no one wanted or was asking for. On top of that you took out all the character to make it look like a modern online fashion store.
Creativity at an all time low in Iceland at the moment?

Edited by: Bodessia on 07/01/2011 21:40:41 It's about ****ing time. Maybe WIS will actually come out! Interesting the way EVE did it, if by accident or not. Created an interesting world where a rich history developed. A player base who is tied to their characters after years of training and investment. And then actually gave them bodies and things to do when they didn't want to click in space. Which is a lot, considering how a lot of people just log in to train and station spin. That also speaks to how tied they are to the game... considering.. they're not actually doing anything.
I think EVE is going to explode with ambulation if there are worthwhile things to do in station. And even if there aren't... most people sit in station anyway. And anyone who couldnt get personally tied to a portrait now will be with an avatar.
