As you can imagine I am somewhat concerned. 104 C is the reccomended max operating temp for the 8800, but my knownledge of the microarchitecture of the card reassures me it wont suffer any damage before 125C.
No it isnt dusty.

Is that a burning video card in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
PS: Get speedfan, install, kick the fans to 100% and if it works, buy lottery tickets on my supercap lottery.

Not sure about the 8800 GT, but the 8800 GTX has a known problem with cooling. I already toasted one and am running on the warranty replacement, which is still working even though the plastic on the card itself is so melted you'd think it wouldn't.
Currently the cool winter air from a window open slightly behind my computer is keeping things under control, but i don't think it's going to last another summer.

So in summer your card catches on fire?

Usually just get artifacts or lag, which cause me to stop playing until the thing cools off. A couple times last summer i thought i lost it after it refused to work at all for a few hours, but it somehow recovered.

My GTX 295 normally operates at 88C when running 1 account, if I run a few more it goes up to 99-104 and I have seen anywhere up to 109 on occasion. It has always done that and in the beginning I was quite worried but history has shown that it works just fine under these circumstances so I gave up on being scared about it, I stopped down clocking and giving it extra cooling.
I have a Coolermaster Stacker casing with extra fans and everything so it's not a cooling issue. I guess that by the time it'll burn out it's time for something new anyway.

Could still be an issue with the heat sinks. They have to carry the heat to the surface to be cooled by any moving air.
As far as i know there's no such problem with the 295s, though.

Turn on vertical sync (use any setting that's not "interval immediate")

Its down to proper airflow through your PC case, my 8800GT is running at 49C running 1 EVE client at 1920x1080 all high and 16Q AA.
Alot of people just don't think to check out the heatsinks on there graphics cards to see if the channels within the heatsink might be clogged up with dust therefore heating the card up.
Also a correct push/pull set-up for the airflow of your case has a massive effect on the cooling of the internals.
Any graphics card running over 80C is down to very poor cooling, obviously this is very dependant on the country your from, I am from the UK so these temps are easy to reach but if your from say....the state of Texas USA or India then for sure your gonna struggle to get nice cool tempratures.

460gtx 1gb here runs mostly at 40C when running 1 client. with max stress it usually tops at 50C.
Right now at idle it runs 24C

My 9800gtx died due to poor anti-dust attention by me about 3 months ago.
I started to get colour issues and crashes, in between bouts of long playing sessions and one day it simply would not boot.
I got the 250gts 1GB version, very cheap and performs better - track one down if you're looking for a similar card as a replacement.
