Hello all, just wondering if it would be possible to install EVE onto an external HDD and run it from there so I don't need to install it on every computer I have. I would like it on my laptop, however the space on there is limited due to the 128 GB SSD it has, and I don't want to clutter it. |

If you're using eSATA or USB3 you might be able to, otherwise the transfer rate will be godawful. |

I don't know why not.
afaik there's really no functional difference between a hardrive in the computer and one attached by an external cord.
Edit: yeah transfer might be a bit slower than an internal SSD, but I don't see that making all that much of a difference for EVE. |

128GB is more than enough EVE at the most (with saved chatlogs etc) should at the most eat 15gb, although with future expansions this is subject to change. |

The optimal thing to do would be a 16GB RAMDisk for load times. But seeing as you have a laptop, it's going to be hard to get good transfer rates out of a USB Hard Drive. Try to get one with eSATA or USB3 if your laptop has those. I Endorse this Product and/or Service Source Recorder-esque tool for EVE |

I've got SISI set up on an External hooked up with Firewire 800. That seems to work fine. EvE: Everyone vs Everyone

16gb would be awful, because it doesn't have enough space to accomodate updates, considering EVE is sitting close to 14ish GB now. |

My old desktop supports firewire 800; it's over twice as fast as USB 2.0 for most tasks.
Seconding that USB 2.0 might be troublesome, might not; firewire, USB 3.0, or ESATA should run it fine. |

Thanks for the support guys, should have posted in the OP that it would be a USB 3 connection, so it would have no issue running. |

I mean, i used to play eve on a 4gig flash drive stick! |

My friend uses a usb 2.0 external drive for eve, and i don't think there is any noticeable difference from a regular installation.
Just copy the installation to the external drive and it should run just fine, i'm not sure what happens if you use it on a computer with a different drive letter configuration, but i don't think it should give you any trouble. If you use different versions of windows, you may need to run the direct x installation on each of the computers, but i think the new launcher does that for you now, but i'm not really sure.
I would not advice running eve off a usb memory stick, not unless it's quality hardware. I did that for some time, but the stick got really hot, and in the end i think it was permanently damaged from the constant high heat levels. GÇ£The best way to keep something bad from happening is to see it ahead of time, and you can't see it if you refuse to face the possibility.GÇ¥-á |

I run it from an old 500 GB USB 1.1 disk. Can multibox without any hassle. If you're reading this you've come to my signature, which has little relevance to this post |

USB 3.0 or thunderbolt (apple) will run it without a noticeable difference to an internal drive/raid. Drives like that are still on the expensive side atm compared to good old USB2. If your laptop is a bit older chances are good it doesn't support those connections as well. Adding a Nas to your network can do the trick as well. Although the laptops will run eve slower then your main unless they have dedicated hardline connections as well. |
