It's a neat video, the butterfly effect, but it feels more and more like it's nothing more than that - a neat video. I've spent the past month living in low sec, and the whole cause and effect thing is... sadly missing.
In this month I have hauled out over 400 million isk worth of goods from low sec, and sold it at a trade hub. Enough to pay for the PLEX for another month, and replace ship losses. So far I have lost none of my goods to pirates, and no one has ransomed me.
I have lost ships though: - 1 pve battlecruiser - scanned down and ganked by a tengu. Ganker didn't even bother to loot the wreck. Pointless. - 2 empty T1 industrials - gate ganked. Grand total, less than 2 million isk worth of modules dropped. Pointless.
I actually took the time to ask what the point of the attacks were, and the reasons given were "why not?", "to make you cry" and "to **** you off". While it would suck to lose an indy carrying 50 million worth of goods, at least I could take comfort in the fact that a pirate made a profit, and that my ship was lost for a reason. So far I lost 50-100 million worth of hardware rigs included, and the pirates have earned 2 million doing it. It's almost enough to make you cry.
Pvp outside 0.0 is just so bland these days - totally pointless. I haven't seen a real pirate in ages, just gankers, funded no doubt by high sec grind. It's depressing. There's no reason for anything any more. It's not for money, territorial control, nothing... it's all for the killmails and the e-peen. A few years ago, an empty hauler would be ransomed; it won't drop anything if you shoot it - but maybe you can squeeze 2 million isk out of the pilot to let him keep the ship and go about his business. This just doesn't happen any more. Seems like people just shoot everything on sight these days. Something feels wrong, and I can't help thinking it's to a great degree due to high sec being much too profitable...
Guess it's time to consider moving into null sec. Maybe things will make sense out there?

Nobody offers ransoms because 9 out of 10 times the victim starts raging and refuses to pay. Then you have to deal with somebody's crazy nerd rage and leave yourself at risk for getting ganked yourself. Not worth it.

High sec profitable?
Now i entirely agree with you about killmails, it's more an fps than an mmo atm. ________________________________________________

The butterfly effect only comes into play when you are flying a rifter and encounter mining barge under attack by pirates.

Wanna bet further down someone calls you a bitter vet?
Besides that trolling attempt I have nothing else to say really. The other thread where I asked the logic of a particular feature about killmails, there were all kinds of reasonable arguments to keep them as they are. Hey, I gues that one guy who things that STO is looking better than Eve these days would say I lost that one
Anyways.. my personal theory about what happened with Eve on a grand scale didn't found much discussion yet and I'm to tired to derail your thread too. support Public Idea Tracker | 24hr PLEX |

I consider high sec profitable, yes. Maybe not compared to null - but compared to low sec, hell yes. Running level 4s you can pay for a new 500 million isk ship once a week, and just use it all to gank people.

You're assuming that pirates somehow know whether your hauler is empty or not (pro-tip: taking your word for it does not make good business sense). Whilst in theory they could use a valuable midslot to fit a cargo scanner and spend the time checking, it's safer, quicker and easier to simply destroy your ship and find out.

Actually it was a wolf.
And you are participating in a butterfly effect. The goods you sell someone else does not have to travel for etc etc. Somewhere down the line a large alliance picks up the goods or uses them. Or has used them.
Just because you are not in a lone Wolf that helps a mining barge that goes on to etc etc...

Well, if you are extremely short sighted, sure, blow it up. Bad for business though. Fitting a cargo scanner might not make sense from a hardcore pvp aspect, but if your plan is to gank haulers you can probably afford to waste one slot on one of the ships in the camp. Destroying property without making a profit is counter-productive. The richer the people around you are, the more you can rob from them. Working actively to bankrupt the people around you isn't going to increase your profits.
Besides, when they don't even bother to loot your wreck...

I suppose that's why I'm bitter.
Fun for my pirate, back when I had one, was to make a living on piracy. Blowing ships up that doesn't stand a chance, for a laugh? Where's the fun in that? People used to have higher standards. Now, it feels like a gank-party.

VERY profitable. But not all highsec, just a few select systems. Mostly Jita and those alike.

Not missing. Just presented in a highly simplified and idealized form in that video. You know, so most people would understand what it means. _

Edited by: CF ProctoR on 10/01/2011 16:56:14 Yeah, people do that for a laugh. Also, another entry on their killboard profile.
It is ridiculous but that's the way it goes.
Do you ever see people attacking others IRL for an MP3 player? Sure it happens, sometimes people even get killed over them, but these crimes are committed by lowlives. These aren't real mobsters, they are petty criminals. Bottomfeeders.
Even Somalian pirates go for sure. They get a tip and attack ships that are supposed to have a valuable cargo. And when it comes to Somalia, we aren't talking about a particularly developed part of the world. Yet they are pros in this regard.
In developed countries you don't have areas that are out of jurisdiction. Even undeveloped countries have some form of security forces present. You can't just go around robbing people because you get punished for it. If not by state police then by the junta or perhaps a bigger crime organization. You simply cannot do in real life what is allowed in EVE. You have territories that have no laws. Show me some place on this Earth that has absolutely no law, however contorted form of law that is.
That's why EVE is not like real life. It's incredibly fictional. If we had a real Amarr Empire, they wouldn't let their citizens suffer from pirates. You know what would happen? They would send out a purging fleet and destroy the pirates along with all corps and alliances they are involved with.

how do you know the guy that killed you never looted your wreck?
I know a bunch of people would rather keep their cap boosters and ammo in their cargo so they can try to get another fight then stop to jettison them and loot a few million in stuff, most bcs aren't fit all that expensively.

How do I know? Simple:
1 Ship blows up. 2 Warp pod to nearest station. 3 Get your free newbie ship. 4 Launch. 5 Use directional scanner. Looks safe? 6 Warp back to the scene of the crime. Now, if your drones hang in space, and everything is still in the wreck, all of it, then yea he didn't loot it. 7 Pick up your remains, sigh at the pointlessness of it all. 8 Cry for a bit on the forums, until you feel better.
