Hello all!
As EVE Online: Incursion is about ready to roll out, it's important that our Mac players be aware that some of the older hardware setups might run the new character creator a little sluggishly. If you find this is the case, toggling "low quality characters" (which doesn't actually diminish the quality of characters) will result in a much improved performance.
If you guys could please log into Singularity (information on how to do so with the Mac client can be found here and give us feedback on how well the new character creator runs for you, this would greatly help us as we continue to test and fine tune the NCC.
Looking forward to your feedback!

Char creator works fine on latest iMac with Highend Grafix... However more clothing styles would be cool... it is a little dull still...

Unfortunatly, there is no manuel patch, you will have to download a fresh client.

Slightly off topic, but I was wondering, what are the min specs OS/Hardware going to be for this. Also, will this be representative of what to expect in the future? Or will Incarna, raise this bar again?

Downloaded 220459, launches, show splash screen , then nothing - not even a blackscreen. Eveonline menu is there, but won't quit - have to force quit.
So I cant test the char generator on my iMac, sorry.

Edited by: Commander Excelsior on 15/01/2011 16:40:28 what a great stuff !
it's not as fast as windows bootcamp version, BUT, it's good to go anyway !
the only one thing i found is the color selection doesn't light up to normal conditions almost everytime. it does when we keep clicked on the related hair, or eye icon or else...
i noticed my gpu fan loads up, even with "interval 1" in config. i can't analyse the fps as ctrl-f doesn't work at this stage.
config : macpro 2.66x4 '06 10.6.5 ati(msi) 4890

I do not have "older hardware" and I found having high quality graphics was painfully slow.
Model Name:MacBook Pro Model Identifier:MacBookPro6,1 Processor Name:Intel Core i7 Processor Speed:2.66 GHz Number Of Processors:1 Total Number Of Cores:2 L2 Cache (per core):256 KB L3 Cache:4 MB Memory:8 GB Processor Interconnect Speed:4.8 GT/s
Chipset Model:NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M
Im not sure what you mean by "low quality characters" but after a frustrating try, I set the shader quality to low, and that really helped with the speed. Made the entire process actually fun.
But I sure hope the final version has more styles and options. I cannot get anything like the look I want with the present setup. I think there are even less style options than the old version.

Not meaning to troll, but if you want us to test out things on SiSi, can we have a little attention in cleaning up the whole OSX instructions (less references to running .exe files, less mass-conflicting instructions, and PLEASE oh PLEASE can we sort something out with the patches? If there is no patch or the current patch is out, please say so! |

Edited by: Varia Henn on 18/01/2011 21:50:21 Ive tried the character creator with 2 systems:
iMac 27" Core i7, 4GB Ram with ATI Radeon HD 4850 (mid 2010)
MacBook Pro Core i7, 4GB Ram with NVIDIA GT 330M (mid 2010)
Both running OSX Snow leopard 10.6.6
The iMac with ATI runs the creator with maxed out settings (minus AA..) very nicely. No technical issues with it at all, really.
However, the Macbook with NVIDIA I had to tick the low graphics quality box in order to be able to use it at all without lagging to high heaven. The CPU hardly does anything, about 17% all cores accounted for so the GPU does indeed seem to do all the work.
This behavior has been consistent for both systems from when I started testing it on sisi, build 216164, all the way to the live creator on TQ today.

Edited by: Selinate on 18/01/2011 21:58:37 For a roughly 1 and a half year old macbook pro (top of the line at it's time), dear god... the character creator is unusable because it runs so slow.
Will installing snow leopard help? This is just unreasonable for it's speed, even with low quality characters toggled...
EDIT: I also had to set the shader to low just to get it to run at a good speed...

We added an option to enable or disable Multithreaded GL which lets Open GL use your CPU to help with graphics, could try that setting if you want to utilize your CPU better. This used to always be on, we added the option of disabling it to see if it would help with some of the heat issues reported in this forum. ------------------ Tester, Scrum Master Quality Assurance

Character creator is extremely hardware intensive. If you can run the game on max settings in a fleet battle without lag, chances are you'll still lag during character creation. I had to go use a stronger computer just to get the model to load, then lagged through the process. At least the results are fantastic.

Not the latest and greatest hardware, I know, The character creator runs very smoothly with shader settings on low, but it is practically unresponsive with shader settings on high. Enabling or disabling multithreaded OpenGL didn't seem to have any effect on CPU use (which hovered around 15%) or framerate.

Not true. I switch over to my windows partition, with all settings on high, and I swear, I must be getting at least 4 times the frame rate. It's not THAT hardware intensive, it just sucks on macs....

This. On my MBP that is a year old but had maxed specs at the time, Eve runs fine at an average of medium settings. The character creator however is completely unuseable due to lag, whatever the settings. Rebooting to windows makes it run very slightly faster in general gameplay and infinitely faster when making a new avatar.
Something is wrong.

Right, but we're on the Mac forum, therefore referring to Macs exclusively, usually.
And it's 100% shaders btw. Turning those down does everything for you.

Two bugs (Live Server).
1. Changing graphic settings inside the Character Creation -> Character Model is gone and only teeth/jaw is left. Clothes are still there (pants at least). Logging/quiting etc doesn't help to fix it. Only after entering the Tool with another Character end the switching back to the first one fixes the problem.
2. Portrait View: Lighting Option doesn't work. Tested the tool with a noobchar, saved settings at the end... After a while, my ingame image is updated and has lighting, but obviously i like to have the option to modify this, before i have to run around with it for the rest of my digital life...
Performance of the Tool is good. Had no problems there.
As a sidenote: It would be nice if you check the Mac patch _first_ before you let people download a corrupt version... Wasn't the first time, right?
cheers

You want me to go through all that just to give some feed back?? You have to be kidding me. I don't think so, kindly read it here: iMac 24" with the latest OS and I can't even get into that character creator. I get stuck at the dialogue box.

Character creator garbage here too. I can change lighting but can't zoom out at all on portrait screen and do not have the same options as everyone else with clothing. No tuck in or crop options other people have.

You said it was hardware intensive, I was just saying that it's not hardware intensive since it works fine for windows. What you said would mislead people who think that it's going to suck on their mac no matter what, even if they have a windows partition.
Also, it's not just shaders. Anything above the lowest setting kills my FPS when I'm on leopard. I tested all of the parameters, same result, incredibly unmanageable framerate...

The only way to get decent framerates is to set shaders to Low, everything else to high, and use low quality characters with no physical simulation.
With everything set to high (but no physical simulation), you get maybe 1 fps on a recent MacBook Pro using the better graphics chip.
It would not be so bad if you could change graphics settings in the middle of the process, so you could sculpt and pose at higher FPS and then look at things in really high quality before committing.

You can. As I've posted in a couple of other threads, make sure you're in the low settings before you enter the character creator, or else you can't sculpt. Once you've started, I haven't had any trouble switching between low and high to preview the work (other than the wait for the textures to load when switching to high). I did get a "switching graphics modes throws away your changes" warning dialog once, but I haven't been able to reproduce it, and switching settings hasn't thrown away my changes. Note that I did my switching by toggling Shader between High and Low (that seems to be the real fps killer), not by clicking the "low quality characters" checkbox.
