The character generator doesn't seem to work for me. EVE just hangs. Does it work for anyone? Is there a workaround?

Edited by: Neral Tasat on 18/01/2011 16:54:01 Edited by: Neral Tasat on 18/01/2011 16:52:48 It's unusable:

Plus, it's very slow, but that doesn't matter so much as long as the graphics are going insane (the stuff hanging on my right are my eye balls, teeth and... what exactly is the rubbery stuff?! ).
For the char creation I will just boot to Windows but once WIS finally launches, this will be a major problem.

Someone in the deployment update thread said that it might take "a couple minutes" after a "black screen" - I'm not getting a black screen however, I'm getting a progress bar that quickly fills up to 100%, reading "Entering Character Creation" and it's been like that for a couple minutes.

Hi there!
I am running Eve on Ubuntu lucid with self-compiled Wine 1.3.11 (perfect except jukebox so far). After today's update, I also had the exact problem as seen in the screenshot by Neral Tasat, plus it was incredibly slow and the character model shows some lines, which look kind of like heightmarks on a map, if you understand what I mean. After some clicking it just completely crashed my system.
I used the winetricks hint posted by Assassin126, which solves the laggyness and also makes my eyeballs look right. No change with the "heightmarks" problem, though. Ill come back if there is anything new.
Cheers, Deuce

I tried the glsl trick, fixed a lot of bugs (teeth popping out, etc) but I still hang when I go to the portrait generator. ---------------------------------------- Gallente by birth, Minmatar by choice. |

I was wondering, since your forum avatar is so... errm!
As to the difference between the portrait you created in char creator and how it appears quite-anywhere-else, CCP has stated (was it in a devblog?) that for some time, we'll get "low quality renderings" everywhere. Then, when the flood of new portraits settles down, hamsters will rework each of them so that they can be rendered at max quality.
Edit: yup, here you go.

I had the same problems after setting GLSL to disable the designer works but Portrait not. After poking around with wine setitngs i stumpled about an error message of wine that the Device is out of Memory. So setting the "VideoMemorySize" to 1024 fix the problem. Char Creator now works for me

Confirm. I had it set to 128, matching my cards actual memory. When I changed it to 1024 anyways, I could make portraits.
Now if I get the patch notes correctly, we'll have to do over all portraits at some point in the future? Also, what's the point of having multiple portraits of an avatar if you have to commit to one anyways?

The character editor is slow, and I have the problem with the eyes, teeth and what ever other part not filling in the body correctly as posted above.
I have even disabled GLSL via 'winetricks glsl-disable' but have the same problem with the eyes and teeth.

I have this problem as well, It's lagging like hell, it's a miracle I got through the creation-section without crashing.

I was able to fix all my issues by installing the newest 260.x nvidia drivers. I better mention this in this thread since there are a few on this subject.
Seems as if you use the newest 260.x nvidia drivers and set up wine correctly you can get the character editor to work just fine. Its a little slow on my 9800GT, but beyond that nothing was choppy and usable, it just took about 10-15s for each option to fully render.
Am still hearing issues with ATI or any non nvidia cards on this though.

Not sure if I'm getting the same problem as everyone else, but the first part works great, no problems, but when it goes to portrait I get a black screen with the timer going around and around until I get bored and close it down. I tried disabling GLSL which did nothing. My registry doesn't seem to contain anything under that heading, unless I'm looking in the wrong place, and I'm not sure how to edit it safely.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and wine 1.1.29. Everything else about the game works perfectly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have just upgraded my GPU to Nvidia Geforce 8400 512MB PCI-E, hoping that i would be able to use the char creator but i have still had no luck.
I'm a bit of a Linux noob tbh, I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick, i've updated drivers and fiddled with the GPU but to no avail.
You guys are suggesting disabling useglsl? how would i go about doing that?
Thanks in advance

Edited by: Steeborg on 02/02/2011 16:26:45 As you can see I got the thing working at last. Although I seem to look like Annie Lennox in the thumbnail! Never mind.
Basically I followed the howto sticky by Essial particularly step 11. Although I cut and pasted the settings into user.reg with Gedit. On the last line I had to change the video memory setting to 1024 to get portrait to render, not what my card was. Didn't have to disable glsl either.
Now working perfectly, although I've yet to try Eve Voice.
Fly safe but carry a big gun!
