WTF CCP ? We are not all uber earning programmers or computer specialists and as such cannot afford the very latest pc's. Your brain child will now no longer even let me enter the game, as it now requires "SSE2 Processor Support" to play. I googled the info and went to a site that offers an explanation for free (CPU-Z)and it informed me that my pc only supports "SSE". So whos wise idea was it to exclude a large proportion of your devoted PAYING clients by making the update useless to us. Wake up and re-adjust please....this is one P1553D off bunny

An Athlon 64 or Pentium 4 are nowhere near "latest and greatest", they're several generations behind the time.
Then Athlon 64 was released in 2003, the Pentium 4 was released in 2000. SSE2 got released in 2003, meaning it's an 8 year old technology.
To give you an idea of how old that is, I was still using my Athlon XP back in those days. ---

Thats a funny reply ibex. The point I was making is still valid though. It's one thing to be asked to replace a video card, which I have done, but to have to replace a pc is quite another. I am not a cheap ass. I have limited abilities to afford an upgrade of that magnitude

Well, here's a point. You don't *need* the "latest or shiniest toys" to run the new client. All you need is a PC that can support SSE2. So, you can buy any old hunk of junk from a pawn shop or whatever which was built after 2003 (just be sure to check that it supports SSE2, you want to be thorough). A computer that old should really only cost you like $100 TOPS. Hey presto, you can play eve again.
What you have to realise is, that EVE has always been an evolving game. It was never going to be able to be run by the original system requirements FOREVER. All that would do is hold the game back, and for what? To please the (very) few players who have a PC which is more than 8 years old? Not gonna happen. Personally, I think CCP have been very forgiving with the system requirements. They could have raised them a WHOLE lot more, and made the client far more resource hungry in order to get it to do more, but they haven't, for people just like you. So cut them some slack and save up $100 for a "new" PC.
Cheers! Max :) ----------------------------------------

Also, you don't have to replace your entire PC. You can just replace the CPU, which is (in a lot of cases) cheaper than replacing a video card. ----------------------------------------

Pentium 4's actually support SSE2. In fact, SSE2 was released on that very processor in 2001. I just threw away five 3GHz P4's because I couldn't give them away. I should have waited for CCP to release this patch I guess. I could have sold them for $40 ea. to everyone who says they can't afford to upgrade. People, there are definitely cheap machines out there that will still play EVE just fine.

Operating Systems are a completely different kettle of fish, and if you were educated in this field you would know this... There is not much difference between XP, Vista or 7 beyond creating a library which automatically changes certain API calls depending on which OS you're on, the same cannot be done for SSE2. ---

You might want to read my post again... I stated those processors are the earliest ones to support SSE2, although you might not have read it as such. By saying what I did, I meant that those processors are not the latest and greatest, yet they support it. ---

I'm far from wealthy, much closer to poverty than wealthy, and I'm on a fixed income yet I play EVE just fine. My computer is also very far from the latest and greatest, probably 5 years old now.

You obviously have a poor grasp of the English language. I never stated that my OS was not up to the new standard, I stated that the new standard requires the pcs' cpu to have SSE2 Support....two totally separte subjects

so you beleive that two days notice is adequate doy you changes to cpu requirements with incursion 1.1.0 reported by CCP Zulu | 2011.01.16 23:16:02 | Comments TL;DR: CPUs that don't support the SSE2 instruction set will not be able to run EVE Online after the Incursion 1.1.0 deployment on Tuesday, January 18, 2011. This will cause players still using Intel Pentium 3 or older and AMD Athlon XP or older CPUs to not be able to run the EVE Online client. Athlon 64 CPUs are not affected.
During the testing of Incursion 1.1.0 we received reports of a seemingly random issue that caused the client to crash on startup. While some of our Singularity testers reported the issue, we weren't able to replicate it. The error log that was generated didn't prove to be helpful, and due to the extremely few reports we received on it, we couldn't take the investigation further.
In an epiphany moment, a diligent tester figured out that some of the third party binaries we use to run EVE Online had been updated recently. Looking further into the issue, we found that a feature had been turned on that used the SSE2 instruction set and the unexpected fallout was that non-SSE2 capable CPUs became incompatible.
We've looked at hardware trend reports and the general status of the market and this obsolete generation of CPUs in desktop computers and gaming rigs is nearly extinct. We estimate that around 0.3% of the playerbase will be affected. We have, therefore, decided to not let this block the deployment of Incursion 1.1.0. An info message that pops up when you start the client on a non-SSE2 capable machine has been added for clarification. We urge everyone who encounters this specific error to submit a petition to our customer support department. We will have updates on the next steps we take with this issue immediately after the weekend but we wanted to get a blog up ASAP to inform everyone about the issue.
Cheers,
CCP Zulu

Guess I was wrong to keep up with the world of technology even moderately knowing I was playing a genre of game that evolves over time and adapts new tech. Who'd have ever thought. Did I say above that 2 days was enough time to update a pc? No. Read before opening that hole in your face, good sir.

Edited by: Zeta Zhul on 19/01/2011 06:57:01 Except of course that the new additions to this game hardly seem sufficient to require such a drastic action. Frankly now that I'm finished setting up these character portraits I can hardly restrain my yawn. It was a pointless exercise in futility that offered not one single drop of gratification.
Additionally this is the end result whenever a dev team uses finished commercial code out of the box. You can control the code you write, you can never control the binaries you buy. So I think we all have to gird ourselves to discover many more incompatibilities to come.
As for how someone too impoverished to upgrade their computer can continue playing Eve Online ... ever hear of plex? It's after Christmas and before Easter. Definitely the Silly Season.
edit: and for Christ's sake could you guys at CCP do something about these character portraits? What the hell is it with the pouty lips nonsense? Third of the portraits look like they just finished sucking on a lemon, another third look constipated. With the old system we could at least do something with the faces.

If you cant afford ú100, go and find a better job.

As far as I understood this is a CPU issue, so you don't have to buy a new PC, all you have to do is upgrade your CPU and/or motherboard and you are done. Any of those pass 2003 should do and I am sure you can find something cheap. Heck ask your friends they might have some old PC they don't use.

This really kills me...back in the day when I got this gamer pc I tried to get the beefiest MB there was yes the good old AMD cpu, it's run this game for going on 4 years nicely I might add, other than the last large patch, which rendered my Video card useless, for a couple hundred bucks I was back on line the next day. Now this cpu issue...not the same story.
The folks that are saying all you need is a newer cpu...well that might work for some MB but not all...oh sure you can get a smokin deal for a CPU & MB combo..get real...there's more to a computer than just a MB & CPU...add it up ...and if you go cheap you might be lucky and get 2 years out of it...
I think many are missing the point...we are all paying customers..a good many have multiple accounts on line at the same time...you think it's easy upgrading 3 or 4 computers...
Wonder if the reaction would be the same for those saying how easy & cheap it is to upgrade if the shoe was on the other foot..
There are two types of people out there..
Lessons>>>those that have less
Morons>>>those that have more
And I can clearly see that there are more Morons here than Lessons...
I strongly believe in Karma...and trust me what goes around comes around...
Enough about that...think maybe it's time to get an alien..
Fly safe if and when you can!!!

When dealing with older hardware it's never just about replacing the cpu + motherboard. You'll often run into incompatibilities or driver issues. You might have to upgrade the OS which can blow your budget completely right there because older hardware might not work at all with a newer OS.
And that's assuming that any particular individual has the personal skills to do the work themselves. If they have to farm out the work to someone else then they're taking a very big chance that the computer will come back at all let alone functional. And if it's the sole computer used by the entire family that could preclude upgrading at all because of the potential problems and downtime.
For you fanboys out there: seriously. shut the **** up. I've had to deal with idiots like you for more than a decade now and it never ceases to amaze me about how much of a jackass you all are. Telling people to "upgrade or GTFO" doesn't help anybody. But then again fanboys like you never do help anybody do you?

This all reminds me of another game I used to play that went through a massive overhaul about 1 1/2 years ago to the CryEngine2 (Crysis-level) graphics engine. Many of my society mates never returned after the change and the population has never been the same. Many other players continue to leave the game from dissatisfaction with the lack of attention to countless bugs and unfulfilled promises. We all just wondered " When something works so well why fix it?".The company that runs the game took a hard hit from what I heard.

Able to support 4 gigs of ram, a pci-e card (you serioulsy should have that already anyways) and the mobo is good at general but not overkill clocking.
If you cant afford ú100, go and find a better job.
I have a wife, 2 kids and I work as a sales rep for comet ( I earn like less than 25k per year.....), have a mortgage and bills to pay but i managed to GOOGLE and READ about cheap reliable hardware and got my son that combo above ^
I also love to troll but ú100 is realistic and affordable by most people, if its not there normally run down junkies who have like 20 kids and expect the government to pay for them
And I'd be willing to bet that your wife works and that you have access to company discount so as to save yourself a shed load on the expense of upgrading each and every year too......ELITSM pure and simple...if you cant afford to upgrade cos of your circumstances you shouldnt be further penalised because of the size of your wallet

Well I had to come back just to see if there were more comments on this CPU issue...and sure as I'm typing this ha ha ha...
I'd like to see some one build a new system for 500 bucks running every thing I do here...my guess is it would be crash city to say the least...a new MB CPU PSU RAM video Card hard drive...$500 get serious...
I aready know there are some out there that will slam this...so here before you stick your foot in your mouth...just how many patches before you have to upgrade AGAIN??? I managed just 2 major upgrades this time...
Unfortunetly this is reality...ya I'll likely end up getting a new system...but seeing some of the comments here regarding those that can't afford to upgrade...that's just low...I find it far from funny to say the least...just kind of lets some of us know just what kind of people some of you are...
There is more to life that EVE...real life in this household comes first...and if you put this or any game ahead of real life finacial issues...you should maybe seek out some HELP!!!

If you people are really that poor then you have no business spending ~$15 a month to play a game. Seriously, you should be spending that money on school or training or something productive.
99.997% of Eve's users would rather that the game progresses visually. Sorry that they don't support a technology used when Bill Clinton was still in the White House.

The most anoying thing about all this to the players that dont have the system to support the game is that most likely the changes that they made to the game isnt going to be all that noticeable at all.
As in most process and programing to make the game run smoother they hade to come up with new ways of doing things to keep the game runing as smooth as before, and supporting future plans CCP has for the game.
So most likely we wont see anything new on the near future that we could point at and say, this is why they did this.

This is the point. The problem with the mindset employed by many elitists here is that it can be used against them, too. So people think if budget is that tight, you should focus more on RL and not play EVE. Well, EVE can be many things, and I guess it's no secret that games can provide a little distraction and relief in tough times. This can be seen as good or as bad, but many people can't understand if they never were in a situation like that, when a game like EVE is really the only nice thing left. First elitism kicks people down and then elitism blames them from not being able to get up again.
So... now to all the people who have a good income and fulfilled life ... what the hell are you doing in EVE?! Isn't your real life interesting enough? Is it maybe just a facade of happiness? Are you maybe tired of your high-paying long-hours management job and need EVE for relief? And why are you posting here in the support forums in the first place? What's YOUR problem? I thought the pre-SSE2 people are the ones having the problem. Seems that you have one, too.
You could realize the irony that the poorest and the richest EVE players might be playing the game for the very same reasons.
And as an afterthought: From the psychological view what's called "fanboydom" is when someone has an emotional attachment and feels it threatened. That's really not limited to computer games. People will fiercely defend ANYTHING they are highly dependant on, because every critique of it will be perceived as a threat.
Hm... maybe some poor players are those who have given up and some rich players are those who cannot give up.
Personally, I'm not that attached to the game. It's just that I have empathy for people in various situations, you know. I simply didn't go all soft with my writing in order to hold the mirror in front of you, although it's always doubtful people will recognize themselves in it.

I have an older processor that will no longer run this game as well. My problem is that I have only been playing this game for less than 2 months. I have spent around $70 so far for the game and 2 months game time. Now your telling me I need to spend more $ to continue paying more $ to play this game. And how long will it be before the rest of you that have ageing computers have to go upgrade something in order to play this game. Will you feel the same then? How about when you have a couple of years invested in here? That's about $200 a year. So what if you have 4 years invested in it. So it's old tech, so i'm gonna go spend a couple hundred dollars on something to play it for now ( like you all said, I can buy and old machine for cheap) and just how long is that gonna last ? Untill the next patch in a few months? And let's face it if your into gaming your not just gonna go buy a hunk of **** just to continue playing games, your gonna go buy the latest and greatest machine that blows everyone else out of the water so that you don't have to upgrade for some time. In short **** EVE!!! I've got plenty of games that run fine after I buy them and dont cost to play after the fact.I will NEVER again pay to play games after I have purchased them . PERIOD!!! **** EVE And **** WOW!

Edited by: Lork Niffle on 19/01/2011 22:01:08 It has taken 8-10 years for SSE2 to become a minimum requirement.
For my system that supports SSE4 it should be by that projection 2017 until I have to change my system.
Frankly I will probably be upgrading my system soon with the release of AMD's bulldozer CPUs which should have SSE5 support.
But I don't care about support, it's a cheap regular improvement I can make to my system to do what I want to do. You have to accept that an old system cannot run everything forever and eventually it will have to be scrapped whether by the simply cycle of improvements or eventual hardware failure (systems usually by statistics fail after 10 years). ------------------------------------- The system issues man. |

Maybe you need to look for a better job? loads around ive been told. This was bound to happen at some point, and TBH Eve users have been lucky, as CCP could have done this years ago like other games Req better CPU's and Higher GFX cards, EVE have been a game that has been around for 7 years, and untill recently would have run on a hamster powered calulator, its been running on low end systems for years. maybe with the subscription your going to save from not being able to play you could put it towords your family or a second hand post 2003 PC?

FYI I already upgraded my card to cover shaders 3.0, that was easy enough to do but a cpu isnt plug and play like a gpu...hell...its not even in the same price range...dont forget that a lot of the ppl replying in here are obviosly of U.S. in origin as they keep refering to $US....well guess what...systems are naturally cheaper in your country as a lot of the items you say cost $500 or less are made in your country. The numbers are roughly the same in Europe but when you consider the exchange rate it is then that you see the difference in cost ie what costs you $500 costs us around Sterling ú500+. Now convert using a ratio of 1-1.6......OH!! lets see....for a low range pc that mp wont last more than a year its gonna cost me USD$750+ just to play till the next ******* comes along with a great idea of not allowing SSE* support....get off your fat arses and realise that we are not all as priveled as the rest of you....if it wasnt for our meager support you wouldnt have a game to play either.

Actualy getting back to the "you can buy a CPU on ebay for $10" bit thats asuming he has a socket 478 board (granted u could have a Celron here)? weill he'd be running a P4 anyway, or maybe a Socket A board? well all AMD XP chips including the barnton use SSE1. So that leaves LGA775 the P4, Celron, dual core etc... all run SSE2 most have 3 and 4.
So that would leave him with a board that can't be upgraded to a chip that supports SSE2

Edited by: Owledge on 19/01/2011 23:45:58 I'm trying to imagine CCP announcing that the latest patch won't run on the latest graphics hardware, claiming that it's still "too new". Sounds perfectly reasonable, no? Takes time to develop for brand new things. Then the people with a lot of money (but also those who saved a long time for it) would complain without end and others could say: Why are you whining? If you have the money to spend $2000 on a computer, you also have the $400 for another, less new graphics card.
But still I have to remember that the main point is the lack of advance information. Even if CCP didn't know what they were buying there... should it be like that in game development? You buy a product, get an update and no info that backwards-compatibility is reduced? Regardless of where you want to see the 'guilt' for what happened, the complaints are justified. And apparently CCP at least acknowledges this, since they offer refund for subscription time you can't spend playing. So the people here dissing the complainers might after all defend a standpoint other than CCP's.

But when humans want to take Darwinist mechanics into their own hands, it becomes social darwinism. And that usually results in a form of free market capitalism that quickly turns into deep socialism as soon as the 'freedom-lovers' mess things up. (I hope I didn't digress too much.)

To say you cant afford to upgrade your PC also means you cant afford the 11-13$ subscription fee. If you PLEX that's different but for a majority of players, they had to sub for a while. The money you spent on the sub you could have saved up or you can SUSPEND your account (if its running on a sub right now) for a while and save up for a new PC... EVE isn't going anywhere, not like it'll just disappear.
$200-300 for a new PC, $100-200 for a used PC... these cheap machines can play EVE just fine.
All these people that don't have SSE2 CPUs are all getting angry when CCP is improving the game but you guys don't to upgrade. Like previous posters said its an 8+ year old technology, you've had plenty of time to upgrade.

And again and again and again... Amazing lack of math skills. Of course, you can stop playing EVE for a YEAR and save for a somewhat faster PC, which will have become obsolete after a year. Is it really so difficult to see the significant difference in 'budget load' between a monthly expense of $15 and a monthly expense of $15 plus a one-time load of 10-40 times that sum? My question goes to every one of you: What is your problem? You know, you should really brace for impact. An even more serious emotional crisis than your current one will come when CCP fixes the issue in a few days so that all the worthless bums can smudge the clear skies of New Eden again.

It would be too risky for CCP to run the PLEX system if that were the case. Remember that someone has to buy the PLEXes with real money. ;) A player becoming ingame-rich and thus not having to pay account fees anymore means no income loss for CCP, because someone pays for that player's PLEXes.

ú500 really, I just found a PC for ú250 (400$, so like $100 more than what I quoted thank VAT which we dont have at most sales tax which varies) in the UK... BTW since you didn't get what I meant about the PLEX I mean there are those out there that do that, not every one does had you read it correctly. Im not trying to be rude but your logic of 'I cant afford a new PC' just doesn't follow through if you can afford a 11-15$ a month game. Also to the guy that stated a PC is obsolete after a year, no because if that was true then those who have 8+ year old PCs wouldn't been able to play EVE until now. A cheap PC works for EVE, media, office, not enthusiast/extreme gaming.
Again Im not trying to be rude or put anyone down its just what I stated above. Sorry if you get offended but it wasn't intentional...

This shows that you apparently don't have to live on a very tight budget. The kind of budget where saving any money is unaffordable luxury. It would help if you actively read up about cases like that, but maybe a somewhat unelegant analogy helps understanding: You're like someone saying to a bum that if only he would stop spending money on alcohol, he could drag himself out of the misery with the money saved. Would you say that to a bum? If yes, than 'cold society' has had a profound influence on your thinking and kept your thoughts away from all things deeply social. If you're not willing to gain more insight on this, then just believe me that there are so many very different social conditions and individual life situations that we can be very surprised when we learn about them. So when someone can just spare the $15 a month for some recreational time, every month the budget will end with nearly zero. So where would a new computer fit in there, hm? And what else could you do if you saved the $15? Maybe buy slightly higher quality food, that's all.

You didn't consider that we're talking about age of technology, so 8 years ago an SSE2 computer was top notch, high end, the 'new stuff'. So you can buy another computer for the fancifully advertised low prices here, which will represent only a small technology leap. That one might be obsolete after a year when the next kind of hardware requirement is updated. So even if you take the budgetary hardship (if you can) of buying another computer, you will always lag behind the 'technology game'. So to have a computer that will work with EVE in a year or two, you would go for the Core2Duo category and whatever graphics hardware is currently considered second-newest. Because, you know, Core2Duo, too, has become quite old already. Has been around for some years. Could soon be 8.

Owledge....Ty for actually catalising the point I was so miserably trying to get across...Not all of us pay or play in the same fashion so it is impossible for sweeping generalisations to be made and think that there is only one rule of financing ones lifestyle choices. In essence it is childlike to beleive that there is a "One size fits all" approach in here when there is so obviously not

As ive said in another post on this very subject. you pay 2 things that you could cut down on, Your ISP rate to connect to the web in the first place, and your eve online subscription. stop complaining about a company upgrading its software to meet today's requirements.
As also stated in a previous post. its like complaining to Microsoft that your xbox can not play xbox 360 games.
This is the pc gaming world, its constantly evolving, when in 8 years time you need to upgrade again, the hardware you will be buying will be worth the same as what the current 8 year old hardware is worth.
And if you stop playing eve to save and just buy higher quality foods with it, who's problem is that?
and the analogy of saying to a alcoholic on the street to stop drinking, is completely out of context, eve is not addictive and damaging to your health like alcohol is. also you already enjoy one thing that the bum does not, a house. get over your "im hard up attitude, put that to good use in the "im going to save and upgrade category"
And before you start, last time eve was upgraded i did exactly what I'm telling you to do here. stop paying for eve, put some will power in, and save for a upgrade. i did and i was in the same boat as you were back then. you have no excuse just like i didn't then, eve is a luxury not a right.
PC gaming has always and will always be about upgrading to keep up with gaming advances. i do not expect a company to stay in the stone age, and stay faithful to older hardware, its always been like this with pc gaming and if you believe im wrong. then you are very much mistaken.

Comet dont sell hardware mate, they sell peripherals and overpriced internet browsing laptops as well as **** TV's and washing machines.
You can HONESTLY get a e3300 and p5ql mobo for under ú100....
Well around 120-130 with a p5ql but this here
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/INTEL-E3300-2GB-DDR3-ASROCK-G31M-S-MOTHERBOARD-BUNDLE-/400188859676?pt=UK_Motherboards_CPUs&hash=item5d2d1d651c
Is enough to run eve, just dont overclock with that motherboard and your house wont burn down.
For the record my wife doesent work lol, women working? can you imagine it.
I currently own 2 PC's, my expensive one and my cheap one.
My cheap one is e3300, p5ql mobo, 9600GT 4gig of RAMbo DDR2 (lol 13ú a stick) a ú35 psu 650w.
All running in a nice big spactious case all for under ú250, this is the one my family uses. Its fast enough to run eve, well fast enough and loads of other games as well. But all YOU need is a mobo and cpu upgrade, reason for the mobo upgrade is if you have money in the future you can upgrade the CPU further without having to replace the mobo again.
My expensive one I wont even get into.
put ú20 away a week, do overtime and in 3-4 weeks time you have a PC in par with todays average standards.

Intereseting concept ... what's paid overtime.. haven't heard that since .. um the early 80's.
Anyway, hardware is just one issue, so you can put together a cheap Athlon64 or pentium4 PC for about UKP180.. now about that OS... yep the old one .. no you really need Windows7 or at least one with 64bit support...this is the one CCP didn't know about.. which is why the Eve client no longer runs AT ALL on my Win2K machine... and once you replaced the OS (shall we say UKP80 minimum) you'll have to replace all the rest of your software that no longer runs....

You have no idea mate, please stop talking.
Eve does not need the 64bit version of windows to run. 64bit isn't used that much as the moment anyway. all it is - is extra instructions to utilise your ram better, hence why eve installs into programfiles(x86) folder on windows 7 x64 ultimate and windows vista x64.
Just get windows xp, its based on windows 2k and you will still be able to use everything your using now.
god the lack of knowledge from people who have GOOGLE at their finger tips is frightening.
Also, a pc that will quite happily run eve can be had second hand for ú70 to ú100, for a full system including monitor / keyboard and mouse, dvd drive and a half decent video card, hell you can pick up a decent pci-e video card now for under ú40 and that's brand spanking new.
meh fecking kids nowwa days, haven't got a clue about shopping around, haven't got a clue about using google, haven't got a clue in general.
As for over time, im sure if you asked your boss for it, he would quite happily let you work longer hours for a few extra penny's.
Would you ask Microsoft to stop developing the next xbox because your current one wont be able to play the games? how about complaining to the tv manufacturers who are now making 3dtv because your current one cant handle 3dtv? seriously if you cant upgrade stop playing PC games.

Whilst there have been many positive and negative responses to this situation I do still get the over-riding feeling that this was an unaceptable situation made worse by the fact that CCP had shed loads of time to say something and failed to do so Why? Who knows The fact still remains that this has happened and its not for lack of employment that some of us do not have access to the required amount of rl money...the fact that we don't should not be used as a callous way of excluding older but still perfectly viable and operational systems Can anyone honestly say that compiling a *.lib file differently has made the lag any better or worse or the general gameplay any better or worse because from what I have seen in here from the general "I've got a problem with *.*" entries it would appear that its a lot worse So you tell me, if what has replaced the functioning set-up that preceeded this abortion of an up-date what was the point? We are all in here to have some fun in our off-time and I truly feel sad for those that say things like "It's only USD$2-300 for a mobo and stuff...it maybe that much in the land of the free but everywhere else in the world has to pay real money...so whatever it is you guys pay, the numbers stay the same but the currency changes and when it does, USD$2-300 becomes Sterlingú320-ú500...and thats for a bog standard machine that most probably wont survive the next genius' idea of not hitting the right button when ordering the next *.lib file to be compiled When replying try to have some comprehension beyond the bounds of your own selfish wasnts and needs for those that are less fortunate FFS

Edited by: Lork Niffle on 21/01/2011 16:35:08 As a poster showed, you can get a low end system for $170, that equates to about ú170-ú200. I know I can build a system for ú300 that will run most games on med-high at 1680x1050 which is overkill for EVE. ú500 is an overestimate for a bare-bones system, especially in comparison to what you had before.
CPUs being outmoded are very rare in the life cycle of software and in this day the P3 and Athlon XPs are the current outmodes for most modern software (even more-so when you consider how terrible they are). EVE was created in 2000-2002 way before most other modern software so has the problem of being in development in between a big shift in hardware. ------------------------------------- The system issues man. |

No, it was becasue there were so few people using an outmoded system that it was deemed unnecessary to attempt to fix what would eventually become an inevitability anyway
Quote: Can anyone honestly say that compiling a *.lib file differently has made the lag any better or worse or the general gameplay any better or worse because from what I have seen in here from the general "I've got a problem with *.*" entries it would appear that its a lot worse
An instruction set change doesn't 'fix' 'lag'. Graphical and Network lag is never fixed with this (they are 2 completely seperate problems) Often instructions set improvements help you accomplish things more efficiently/accurately or increase the ability of the processor or make it easier to program on them. These differences are rarely seen in modern software as they have more critical bottlenecks than processor efficiency.
Quote: "It's only USD$2-300 for a mobo and stuff...it maybe that much in the land of the free but everywhere else in the world has to pay real money...so whatever it is you guys pay, the numbers stay the same but the currency changes and when it does, USD$2-300 becomes Sterlingú320-ú500
Britain operates still under ú1 = $1 in hardware.

And whats to stop other, non-game, software developers from stopping support on inefficient hardware because it slows their development up having to test under such insignificant systems? Rather than worrying about EVE stopping support worrying about everyone else turning around and stopping support for it. Eventually it will happen. ------------------------------------- The system issues man. |

put ú20 away a week, do overtime and in 3-4 weeks time you have a PC in par with todays average standards.
Shut the hell up honestly, I run eve on a Windows vista 32bit, always have and always will for this particular PC.
Why the **** would you spend 150-180 on an athlon64 or Pentium4 Pc when you can get a Pc with the new Celeron cores (completely new architecture from the old ones, they are actually a decent CPU for people with very little money) for the same price if not less.
Also I do not see why CCP had to warn you that a game patch, in 2011 is going to be "upgraded" (lol) to SSE2....technology thats been around for nearly 8 years.....
I have an old AMD 5400+ and Nforce 4ma mobo I can sell you for like ú40....i can easily setup a private ebay listing and also helps me get rid of the stupid thing.

Obviously you are talking to me. I am British and the ú1=$1 means the rate for Electronics (not the actual currency rate), meaning that what the americans pay for hardware we pay the same number just with a different symbol.
And our currency is really weak at the moment, due to the fact the exchange is 1.6 rather than 1.8+. The Chinese buy exclusively in dollars and the Americans did not steal the war, the Russians won. ------------------------------------- The system issues man. |

Wake up man... NO ONE CARES. You don't like? Go quit. Go cry. Whatever. Don't forget to shut the door on your way out. No one will miss ya. CCP doesn't care, and most people don't care either. See that is why eve is so "good". (not sure if good is the right word in this case) It teaches you REAL LIFE lessons, because a lot of what is happening in EVE happens in real life. It is just as tough and merciless, and good at pointing out your weak sides.
EVE sometimes makes me almost want to cry...
Eve managed to:
1)Point out that I have unstable nerves. How I stress over petty things. 2)Showed me that I am an uneducated man, and what is more important, it showed me how important it is to be educated in today's world. 3)Showed me that I suck at BASIC math. And how much it sucks to suck at math. 4)Allowed me to see how much of a mistake it was not to learn programming when I was younger. How many years I wasted for nothing. 5)Showed me how I cant manage my time. Showed me how antisocial I am.
EVE (in some ways) contributed to me:
1)Coming back to college, getting a job. 2)Starting to work on myself and many aspects of my life. 3)Pay attention to things happening outside of my little comfort zone/bubble I have been living in all my life. 4)Perceiving myself and other people differently....
And I only told you a little... I can keep going and going...
EDIT: Oh ****.. As I was writing this, people already came in and said exactly what I told you they would say. Those damned pricks...

I took no offense. I just laughedàagainàat how stupid you're being. managing your money better is neither offensive nor jailworthy however.
as to your financial state, you gave us enough information (i.e. im too poor to play eve and upgrade hardware) to allow everyone with a eve login to make judgments on it. if you dont want people giving you advice on financial information, dont ***** how you cant afford ****.

And that would actually be a kind of clear TOS violation that would go unpunished. Because EVE is so close to the real world where apparently only fools stick to the rules.

Wow, so many angry little people in here. Eulysees you really need to take a long hard look at your attitude my friend because it stinks and all its doing is making people think you are an idiot. I want to start with a quote
Originally by: Eulysees Chelt exclude a large proportion of your devoted PAYING clients by making the update useless to us
Where did you pull this number from and did you get assistance from David Blaine in producing it? I don't know anyone who still uses hardware as old as this for anything other than the most simple of tasks. I mean come on, SSE2 chips were released what? 7 years ago? maybe even 8. That is one hell of a long time in the PC hardware market, when updates and upgrades are popping up almost every 6 months, and to expect a company to hold back its development to maintain support for ever increasingly out-dated hardware is short sighted in the extreme.
A good example here would be Microsoft and its support for XP, after god knows how many years it has finally stopped supporting it officialy. This isnt just because it wants to push its newer programs (although that is a major part of it) but because there are limitations to that software that would take either a major re-write to solve or would require every other software and hardware manufacturer to stop making new tech. And as anyone with an ounce of sense knows stagnation means death, for industries as well as for life.
I have read through this entire sorry litte thread and been stunned by some of the answers, excuses and reasons why people cannot cope with this inevitable change. Some have said they cannot afford an upgrade due to low wages, I say thats rubbish. Saving $5/ú5 a week or fortnight is not that hard, even on a low wage. Make sacrifices elsewhere, live on beans and toast for 2 days a week, quit smoking, quit drinking if you do any of those things.
Some claim that they would need to spend hundreds of ú/$'s upgrading their hardware, also rubbish. After searching for 30 seconds for "SSE2 compatible CPU's" I found a list of matching items, I then ran that list through google and found hardware bundles for cpu and mobo. Within 10 minutes I found dozens of bundles, all for under ú50 and then found the same for the USA, Australia, and most of the rest of Europe. And before anyone else trys to use the old "things are cheaper in Europe because of the exchange rate, I ran my searches to only find products within specific countries. So for English parts I searched only for products IN England, same for the USA etc, etc. This eliminates any exchange rate cobblers as the buyers would be buying with their own currency from someone selling in their own currency.
The way I see it there are only two valid reasons for complaint. First that some people are not as adept at hardware configuration as others and may incur extra costs to get the new hardware set up, though even this can be rectified with a few internet searches regarding self builds and upgrading. Learn something new maybe? Secondly, and most understandably, the fact that people were given 36 hours notice about what does, for a very small percentage of users overall, constitute a game breaking change. This was very poorly handled by CCP no matter which way you look at it, and I am saddened that such a small amount of effort was made to reduce the impact of this problem.
For the TL;DR crowd.
Hardware is cheap, saving is not hard though it may take time and you do have my honest heartfelt sympathies. This DOES NOT affect a large portion of the playerbase, please don't exagerate. Those affected did deserve more notice than they got and this needs addressing.
Also, people need to chill the heck out.

The first SSE2 supported cpu was the Willamette Pentium 4 released in November 2000 for a retail price of $125, which btw if quite cheap for even a 'new' processor.
If you are SERIOUSLY trying to say that CCP shouldn't update their game libraries because you haven't got around to upgrading to a PC that is less than 10 years old you are CRAZY.
If you honestly think that CCP are in the wrong here then you should sell whatever PC you have and go do something else because playing games is obviously not for you. Not even with a console.
And as for why you only got 2 days notice of this.. The probable reason is that CCP don't even HAVE a PC that old to test with because anyone that actually wants to play a game would not in their right mind be trying to do it on something so incredibly outdated. God.. if anyone actually even tried to give me a PC that old they would have to PAY me for the inconvenience.
So here you are.. playing one of the most genre defining sandbox games you can get run by a company that has even made a parady music video called 'Harden the **** up' and your calling them out because your hardware is over 10 years old...
Deal with it. |

Why don't CCP just give you a one off choice.
1 - You can redo your character which means you can bimble around in stations to your hearts content when they release it (and have spent another few weeks after that fixing the update).
2 - Get your old portrait back but you'll never be ablt to walk about in stations.
I'd choose 2.

IMHO posts like this are uncalled for, have you ever had to live on a tight budget??? Have you ever had to worry where the next buck was coming from? Did you ever have a parent or a child become terminally ill and you had no benifits and all medical costs were out of pocket?
Last but not least, would you use a piece of junk knowing that it would be rendered useless in another couple patches?
Man I got to say there sure are some mentally challanged peeps here. Come on get real, there are so many variants here, you don't know crap about peoples real lives or thier financial situations. You should be so lucky not to be in that type of situation.
What I'd like to know is what gives you the right to say crap like this??? Did you even bother to read what you typed before posting?

Of course that's a valid point, but who decides what is appropriate and what not? Who knows how many EVE players playing a pirate/criminal would run amok with a gun if they didn't have the game as an escape strategy. If happily married, what was the price of the gift you bought your wife for her birthday?
Do your kids wear decent clothes to school?
If not married and/or no kids, can you afford hot water and trash pick-up at your home?
It would seem to me that if you have not updated your computer in 8 years due to lack of currency, then you are spending money on EVE that you should be devoting to making your married life better, or your kids life better, or if you are single, your life better. Cancel your EVE subscription immediately and channel your income into better priorities.
Now for the rest of us, we appreciate CCP using modern technology, and requiring we have modern systems, because that is the way we get the refinements we want in the game.

The ironic thing in my case is that Eve was kind of a last resort in good games that I could still play without updating my ancient wreck. When I do save up about $200 for the upgrades I want I will be able to play the games I left before Eve - my "first loves". So upgrade or not I will probably not be back but it was fun while it lasted. Fly safe pilots and have the best of luck in your adventures.

I feel really sorry for those who cannot upgrade their CPU as required.
I am also not able to play EVE until i get my new comp!!!
Muhahahhaa
Triple core CPU, 3 Ghz processor, 3 Gig Ram, 9800 GT 1 gig Graphics, got trade in on my old machine too, it isnt top spec, its a cheaper option but compared tom old system its awesome (1.5 Gig ram, 4570 graphics card (guessing now), 1.7 Ghz processor running mmx!!) Still got Windows XP on it too, until they change that then I will upgrade to windows 7.
Seriously there are options out there, take your comp down to your local computer shop ask real nicely, they might have a trade in that would suit you (or parts of) and cost you very little!!
If you cant afford it get a job, wait til birthday, sell some DVD's or CD's on them trade in web sites, old mobile phones, car boot sale, wash cars in your street, there are a tonne of options to make money.
