As a Carrier Pilot, would this be worth my time to train for? I'm brand new to being a carrier pilot and haven't got the slightest clue as what I'm supposed to be doing.
Right now, I'm just drooling over my ship. Lol

If you don't know how you should be fitting a Carrier (and yes, this includes drones) then you have no business flying one, frankly.
Not particularly helpful, I know, but it's true.

I have one, not fitted. I just haven't found a corp yet. I want to learn though. I was going to apply to a corp in the IT Alliance, but i'm not sure I'd get in..

Edited by: Paikis on 19/01/2011 23:01:43 I just have to LOL at all these people who say stupid things like, "If you don't know <whatever about a carrier> then you shouldn't be flying a carrier!"
Apply that logic to driving a car. If you don't know how to reverse paralel park you have no business driving a car! No one would ever get a license, because they wouldn't be able to get into a car to learn it. The only way to learn this stuff is to have someone teach you and/or to actually go do it. Expecting people to know how to do something before they've done it is stupid.
How did the first carrier pilot do it? I bet he just jumped in and played with it. Tried different things and found out what worked by probably losing a few of them.

To help a bit: yes they are definitely useful. But in all sincerity I can not recommend you suing a carrier until you have not done thorough research. I myself have not even started into capital piloting but already know what I need.

Same.
I'm currently training Advanced Spaceship Command 5. Until it is useful to me, at least it will help my Charon, which I use a lot, get to warp faster. Basically, I plan to get all drones skills to 5 except racials, and all capital module skills to 4. I already have Logistics 5. I should be ready in another year or so, if I don't wander from the plan too much (currently 37.5m SP)
Repair drones are handy for say repairing sentry guns while you focus your efforts on repping the tower's shield. Or for repping sub-caps when your main attention is on repping capitals.
Repair drones are not essential, but they are certainly useful to a carrier pilot.

It's not the fact that they ask questions that is the problem, it's the fact that they ask questions on a forum about something that either they should know the answer to already (because you had a use for the ship in mind other than hanger decoration right?) or they should be getting someone in game to teach them - you don't ask on a forum how to drive a car, you read the highway code and go find an instructor.
Capital ships are not really meant to be solo ships, they are corporate assets - the only place they are really usefull (0.0) requires you to be part of a corp/alliance - where there will almost certainly be someone you can learn the ropes from and actually have the space to use one.
To use your analogy, you can't learn to parallel park if you have no road to drive on.
Too many people just see carriers as the next step up from a BS, or just want one for the epeen and train for one & buy one only to realise they have no good reason to have one and just end up parking it in a lowsec station. They are a teamwork focused logistics asset, you really shouldn't be flying one unless you have a good reason to, and if you have a good reason to then the forum is the last place you would need to go to find instruction on how to fly one...

The forum is as good a place as any to ask for cap ship training tips. Every thread that has anything to do with carrier skills produces a string of equivalent responses: "If you have to ask, I'm not gonna tell you." It's not really necessary to repeat this response incessantly.
Just pretend the OP is saying something like "I'm a 133tz0r 0.0 supercap pilot with a billion killz, and I like to keep a rack of repair drones in my bay. Anyone else do this? Why or why not?" Then you can respond by saying things like "That's a waste of drone space for reasons 1, 2, 3." or "Yeah, repair drones really come in handy from time to time. Like this one time we were fighting a losing battle and etc. etc. etc." You'll actually be contributing to the wealth of information on these forums rather than repeating a response everyone has heard fifty times already. What a concept!

A Carrier is worth it for the logistical benefits alone, just saying.
On topic: You might want to start out with Repair Drone Operation IV and start out with T1 drones. Then see how often YOU use them.

As someone who actually trained up T2 repair drones in my carrier, I have used them a few times. The times I have needed to use them, they were worth it.
However, T2 repair drones is a medium range skill, 20 days or so iirc. Like was stated above, get T1 to level IV. The ability to use/carry any drone in your bay is a good idea, you will never know when you will need them. Instead of saying, oh crap if I had this, then watching your buddie's ship go pop, it would be nice to be ready for everything. This is also extremely difficult to transport and buy as well so you must also look at that side of it as well.
As a side note it's quite expensive for some people to carry 582 T2 drones around with them. ============================================= "Only the dead have seen the end of war" - Plato

- I'd tell you why but then I'll have to kill you. And to kill you I'd have to log in. And to log in I'd have to stop browsing these forums. Both you and me knows that'll never happen. |
