Having done a few 5 hour cycles with the new PI system, I have a question.
When ever I restart a cycle program I need to change the extractor head units around a bit to get higher extraction.
I place my extractor heads around looking at the program time line to get the best extraction amount.
But the locations where I place my extractor heads are not the better spots on the planet according to scan results.
I am wondering if I have wasted training time training Planetology & Advanced Planetology to lvl 5?
It no longer matters what you see on scan results, it matters what the program time line of the extractor control unit shows.

I found that there's only a small difference between the better spots and intermediate spots, so its no big deal I think.

I have to somewhat agree with you.
Advanced Planetology, does seem a little redundent in its current form now with the new PI. Glad i only trained Advanced Planetology to lvl 4 and not lvl 5.
Perhaps a change from better scan resolution to, x% yield bonus per lvl for Advanced Planetology skill. Would be a better use of the Advanced Planetology skill.

Then why have the Advanced Planetology skill on the databse at all, if it doesn't present a real advantage?

Edited by: Darod Zyree on 20/01/2011 14:37:24 I'm wondering if there is some sort of bug going one in relation to that skill.
A better spot, according to the planet scan, should result in higher yield right?
edit:
also what use is there now to train these 2 skills high up when you can just hover the heads around and that way get the "best" spot.
Its not required to see the good spots on planet scan, the extractor control unit program time line will show you where to place which extractor head.
Could a CCP dev confirm/deny this being an issue?

The spots you initially scanned as being the best spots (before you started extracting anything) are refreshing at a higher rate than the other spots.
In the short term, your new scan results are in fact accurate. If you extract for a short period of time on the new hot spots you will get a higher yield. However, if you extract for several hours (long enough for the refresh cycle to kick in), the actual hot spots from the original survey will be the best spots.
Take home message - do the survey and lay down the extractors once. Your long term results will be slightly lower than your first day's results, but the best spot will always be the best spot. You establish an equilibrium fairly quickly.

Thank you for your explanation.
Do we know what the refresh cycle is ?
