Had Jumpgate evolution not squandered their resources, this is exactly what they were promising lol Too bad they waited so long theur publishing company is sueing the development company for the money they used lol

Bridge commander with a whole giga-****-tonne of mods was extremely fun.
I remember punching holes through enemy ships watching their warp core go critical or putting all of your life support into your Dorsal shield array so you could get one more salvo of Quantum torpedoes away.
A great game, but not suited to the eve universe, which is, by nature, stuck the way it is.
Changing it now would upset an already delicate balance.

Originally by: Mel Lifera It's actually a very accurate naval warfare simulation. Ship commanders give orders (like clicking buttons) and then ship crews carry those orders out. Ship captains don't man guns or 'take the wheel' as it were. I may be wrong, but I was led to believe that ships in EVE were supposed to be (progressively larger but in any case) crewed vessels that capsuleers 'command'. In that respect, "space fighter cockpit view"-style combat would not make sense.
To my knowledge, there are "space fighter cockpit view"-style games available if that's the experience you seek.
That is the way i look at the game also. Kind of fun really. When my blasters miss, i just blame it on the crew, they tend to have bad aim

Dice roll? Bullsh!t man, I once played a good old game of risk (u remember board games right?) and in this game I invaded southern europe from northern eruope with a monsterous 10 troops vs their 2...an obvious win. I LOST BECAUSE THE BAST@Rd KEPT ROLLING 6'S.
Name any 2 ships in eve that can stand againts 10 of the same ship here. Dice roll my ass

combat in eve is not supposed to be fun and never has.
it's a spreadsheet game, on the other hand if you enjoy chess then you will enjoy eve combat, otherwise just stick to the pretty graphics and farming cash while your g15 mines on your alt...
eve combat sucks, but the graphics make up for it :P

4 years and you still haven't worked out manual piloting in pvp? it's not just click shoot. look at the top killers in BC, you think they got there by having more skills than literally everyone else? They got there with combat smarts. Now gtfo and play star trek, you're polluting my server I don't want to be human! I want to see gamma rays! I want to hear X-rays! I want to smell dark matter! Do you see the absurdity of what I am? I'm a machine! And I can know much more. |

I think what EVE needs is automated tournaments. The most annoying part about combat is that you are always outnumbered. The game is all about outnumbering and outganking the opponent. It's unsportsmanlike which is gross.

CCP need only make a few improvements that they should have made long ago to make it more tactical.
1. Line of sight fire 2. cant shoot through objects and ships
note that missiles can fly around.
major changes
Remove Click move. introduce something ells that is more unique to make space combat more flexible.
make people manually target and shot to make personal skill count. make people able to dodge incoming attacks.
next step Redoing the combat into a space sim.

Sooo... You're like the 50,000th guy asking the same since Day 1, and still now its impossible to achieve that with real world internet. Get over it. You can't have LOS combat and such with 60,000 people onboard and pings above 100 ms. People has pings of 200, 300, 400 ms, and either you kick everyone slower out or won't be able to synchronize them fast enough.

Your first suggestions require 'bullet tracking' (not sure what its technical name is) whereby the servers track the path of the projectile and detects what if anything it hits along its path. This requires a lot of server resources which is why most games like this are limited to less than 100 players and it's the rare one that has more. On an MMO scale, most games/servers are physically incapable of crunching that many numbers so unless you're willing to loan a spare supercomputer, its not going to happen in EVE any time soon. The best most games can do with current technology is treat the shot as an equation with a bit of randomisation thrown in. The 'bullet' is only shown client-side. The server doesn't know it exists, only that the gun has been fired.
As to the WASD one, again the current system is one of the only ways of doing it on this scale but this time due to the frequency of server responses. An MMO server invariably responds slower than a small-scale multiplayer server so there will be a noticable delay between what you tell it to do and what actually happens. Imagine playing BF or CoD with a ping of a few thousand (or OVER 9000! for those who like internet memes) rather than a few dozen. I've played on an MMO which tried this system (legally not allowed to say which one) and while it is somewhat more involved in combat than eve, it does essentially feel the same due to the fact your ship takes a second to actually respond so edge of seat flying it ain't. It would be literally impossible to even hit a target unless your guns autofired like in the aforementioned mystery MMO or EVE as otherwise the target will have moved in the space between you pulling the trigger and the game responding.
I don't know how Jumpgate Evolution managed it. In fact, until it becomes active I'm fairly certain they haven't!
For the foreseeable future anyway, there WILL be a distinct line between an MMO and a space-combat sim.
P.S. I know this is a fairly long winded response to what is probably a troll but I derive the same pleasure from feeding them as some do feeding their goldfish.

Originally by: Zarwun soo when is CCP aiming to make a more action oriented Ship combat ?
at the moment its click shot lame.
its easy to do a fun combat just copy paste Star Trek Bridge Commander, Freelancer etc.
Personal Skill Above Level is the way to go. Levels are just bonuses.
Why, oh why? Can't they see it? Nobody ever asked to have it? Oh, wait a minute: what do you do when you got 60,000 people in a server?
They already told it. The server (ONE server for 60,000 people) generates a "frame" each second i.e. it updates every clients' situation every second. That's how it works, ticking at one frame per second, and there's no way to make it better without putting all that 60.00 people in the same room.
Anyone who can do what you ask in the real world, with real internet connections, should do it right now and quick EVE out of the market. Any volunteers? You? It's easy, just synchronize 60,000 people every second 23 1/2 hours a day... and do so fast enough that one tenth of a second means the difference between victory or defeat. Just notice, one tenth of a second, 100 ms, is an excellent ping. And many of your users will need three or four times longer just to tell you they are there...
Good luck, hero. Go succeed. Show CCP how this things are done.
You sir, are a hero to programmers.

We don't need space combat simulator physics instead we need a simple LOS check to determine if firing is possible. Obviously this would be no small task as the game's balance would have to be changed drastically.

Personal skill does already count. Manual piloting properly takes skill, keeping your transversal up. Getting rid of drones fast when in smaller frigates takes skill. Knowing when to overheat, which modules are necessary for particular targets I.e. not using a tracking disruptor on a missile ship. Knowing your ships limits and being able to judge your opponents properly takes skill. Dodging opponents fire is possible, its called keeping your transversal up so that the opponent cant track you.
Unfortunately none of these are necessary in the blob warfare of large alliances.
Also 2 pods in 2 years is not regular combat.
