Scenario: During a HS mining op, we had an individual flip one of our cans then dock up at a station to let the aggression timer run out. So we position a stealth bomber in the belt and a few battleships about 500km off the belt to see if he would return. While he was gone we had one of our members flip the can back to draw him out. When the individual came back he engaged our corp member that we had reflip the can. Now here is the issue... I was under the impression that the corp would have kill rights on the can flipper, except he was neutral to the rest of us. So we helplessly watched him kill our corp mate. We did find the situation extremely funny since our plan went so horribly wrong. Also after he killed our corp mate he went and reflipped the can and still remained neutral to the rest of us.
Am I missing a key piece of information about kill rights or was something horribly bugged?

When the can flipper flipped the can your corporation got rights to kill the flipper during a 15 min window. During this window, the can flipper's corporation cannot directly help him (except with repping). When the flipper docked up he waited for that window of time to be over, so when he came back out your corporation no longer had rights to kill him. However, your friend by flipping the can back started his own 15 min timer. this timer allowed not just the flipper but also his whole corporation to kill your friend while it was active, without the rest of your corporation intervening. As for what happened after your friend was dead and the can got flipped back again -- that part strikes me as if you have your facts wrong. Maybe your friend is actually in a different but related corp to yours, or maybe your friend only stole from the can and didnt actually flip it. Those are the only ways I know of that you wouldnt have gotten new kill rights on the flipper.

That's a very good possibility, I wasn't watching too closely at that exact moment. We also figured that our corp mate may have flipped back the wrong can. That thought had crossed our mind. Mainly because the whole thing made absolutely no sense to us.

Stealing from the can gives the stealer 15 mins in which he can be shot by the corp of the person who owns the can. Stealing the ore back gave the guy who now owns the can's corp the right to shoot at the new thief. Since the original 15 min timer had already run down only the new thief (your friend) was killable by anyone else.
Suggestions:
1. Never use a bomber anyway. Bombers are fail. In high sec they are even failer than other places in eve. Bombers are not a pvp ship. They are a no tank little death box waiting to die to a real ship.
2. A recon of some sort might have been useful for tackling the other player depending on what the original theif was flying.
3. Should have had someone steal the can in something mildly weaker looking than the original thief and then have corp members with logistics ships come and rep him.. This would have resulted in the original thief losing a ship to something smaller than him which would have obtained epic lols from his own corp of probably griefers.

This is old evil - but it should still work.
If you have a 15 minute aggression timer going and there is a possession of the target near by, shoot it 1 time. A wreck, a can... whatever. That will refresh your 15 minute timer but his will expire showing he has is clear after the initial 15 minutes -- he's not clear, you still have rights to shoot him.
You now have the advantage when he comes out. YOU can tackle/shoot him without concord becoming involved prior to his engaging your bait and you won't show as a "red" target on his overview.
By using this method, it is possible to keep extending that timer indefinitely - especially if it's near a secured container. 1 shot, every 14 minutes, will keep the timer going as long as you want, yet the "owners" timer will clear.

Umm, there is not difference between stealing from a jet can and putting it in your cargo hold (stealing) or stealing from a can and putting it in your own jet can (flipping).

Yes there is in the context of the OP's question. The op said that after his friend "flipped" can and was killed, the can was flipped again but they didnt get aggro. That can only happen if (1) the can was not really flipped by their friend (he merely stole some ore; or (2) the fdriend was in a different corp.

But you're missing the point Vol.
If, for example, I steal ore from your can, you can legally shoot at me without CONCORD intervention. Whether I put what I stole in my cargo hold or in a jet can that I created makes no difference whatsoever. It is the fact that I stole, not that I flipped your can that gives you the right to aggress me.
As for why the original agressor was not flagged when he re-flipped the can, I have no idea. My gues is that the OP does not have his facts straight, or he does not have all of them.

Well, whilst I thought as mostly ppl here explained today I can confirm that some strange thing is happening with the can flipping and associated killing rights.
I was playing with 2 alts, one as miner, one as combat pilot, both in same corp and fleet.
Miner ejected cans and twice the can was flipped, whilst the alt was waiting in a Safe Spot near by, the combat pilot warped to the miner just to find the flipper was not red on overview. Targetted the flipper and clicked on guns did issue the warning about to be concorded if action was continued.
Just one time, being both alts in the same belt, so same grid, the can was flipped, then with a slight delay the flipped became red for both of my alts.
So that seems to be a bug or a new way applying the killing rights, not being enough to be in same corp but too must be in the same grid.
