Ignorance is not an excuse to continue breaking rules that you have been made aware of. Making a thread for your 'issue' is your responsibility, not mine, as you are the one that has this issue, not me.
This thread no longer serves a purpose, as what you want is support, and support is to be gained in the Assembly Hall. This forum category is for discussing ideas, feature requests or issues that players feel need to have something done about them; asking for support is not discussing an issue. This thread has already served its discussion-oriented purpose(s).
ignorance you say? well, i am learning from the masters (cccp) they are the true masters of ignorance and they have proved that many times.
breaking the rules you say? remember ghost training issue? how one day a game feature became 'a bug' and got removed even from eve manual? and how cccp lied to our faces about it? so who is breaking the rules here?
mate, you obviously know 'zip about nothing'. so i suggest you to skip this thread. after all, it's not your problem, is it?

For myself, I went through and manually locked the cache folder so EVE can't save the thumbnails.
You can do it pretty easily in vista/7, but I'm on XP so had to figure out how to do it.
First, control panel -> folder options -> view -> uncheck simple file sharing Second, \documents and settings\(user)\local settings\Application Data\ccp\eve\(folder eve's installed in)\cache\pictures\characters\chat\ -> delete everything in this folder third, view -> customize -> security -> set all user groups write permission to deny. fourth, be amazed at how much better the client performs
There are a few other places where client performance has dropped with incursions demonstrating that "corification" is **** for performance. For me, most notably in the keyboard shortcuts and the tactical overlay, except in those cases, I can't manually break the client to fix them.
*edit - and I really really hope my manually locking the folder is returning piles and piles of error messages to the CCP servers. We just need to get FC's and alliance leaders to start pushing my workaround and maybe CCP will pay attention.
this tip is AWESOME, mate. pretty neat way to walk around that issue.
i have send you 100M for this post. not much but definitely worth a reward.
Universe bless you, man.

I doubt the portraits are being loaded from the node. As such they are not likely a significant contributing factor to fleet lag. CCP could confirm this however.
Not sure why your hating on the new avatar creation system, its a seperate topic. Personally, I quite like it, its a big improvement over the old one which was becoming a bit dated.
As for re-adding the option to manually load portraits. The primary solution is to get rid of automatic display of people in local at all.

It contributes to general client-side lag. Even if it's not in a major game-breaking way for everyone, it is still noticeable. Dominion increased server-side lag, incursions increased client-side lag. There's no excuse. It's another example of developer resume padding, instead of meeting customer needs and expectations.
If you don't believe the effect it has on client-side lag, try doing the read-only changes I have posted and watch your client-side performance noticeably improve.

I completely believe that it improves client side performance. I'm just stating that regarding fleet fights it's likely fairly irrelevent server side.
Getting rid of local would resolve both issues. However if they are not yet willing to do that I would propose a global switch in the graphics options for turning portraits on/off. This way people can turn them off to resolve individual performance issues while being unable to use it to enhance local intel.

yes, to get back to old, working all nice and clear, option : load image WHEN clicked on it.
cccp, are you doing this on purpose? to prove us that you are in charge here, not paying customers?
is it possible for you, cccp, to care even less about what clients want? what's good and useful for us?
cccp, you got monopol NOW... today... universe knows what tomorrow will bring us. personaly i think that all you need is some good competition, to put you in the right place.

before those changes i was trying to scroll local in jita. that was fun :] those avatar changes gave word CLIENT-LAG a whole new meaning.

nerfing? it was not a nerf :] cccp simply forgot about it OR they did it on purpose to p1ss ppl off. auto-loading of avatars should not be consider as nerf. it's just making performance of this sh11tty game even sh11ttier :]

The more idiocy I see coming out of these forums, the more I worry about this game. It's idiot people like you mate that are trying to ruin eve and are incapable of accepting change. The new avatars are the most realistic and graphically realistic avatars out bar none. Loading pics is not harming your game at all, or your gameplay and is in no way affecting download speeds and reactiosn times in combat. Please just shut the hell up and go away.

Quoting someone who hasn't tried turning them off and seen the performance improvements. Snap judgements without thought or testing kinda makes the "idiocy I see" comment particularly ironic.
Change is fine as long as it's change for the better. The thing is nobody ASKED for new portraits. Nobody ASKED for them to be forced to load. Nobody ASKED for a slowed client with absolutely zero improvement to gameplay to justify it. Sure, I'll take the new portraits. Sure I'd enjoy them IF each and every one didn't represent a worse game experience.
All we're asking for here is an option to play the game the way we like. Removing an old feature with no patchnote, no justification, and no reason to do it other than give the devs something to fap to on their resumes is an insult. And it's awful that the only way we can restore an old feature is by intentionally breaking the client.

"Please just shut the hell up and go away" are you, by any chance an US citizen? that kind of attitude is pretty much us one.
anyway, kiddo, if i were wrong or was talking bull!@#$ then sure, i would shut the hell up like you requested... but i cant. you know why? cause i am right.
i cant afford to buy a few parts to upgrade my old 'puter' so yeah, blocking avatars from loading pretty much increases it's performance and works in my favour
and i bet you didnt even try to block those avatars, to see performance to increase so i say it's YOU who should shut the hell up and go post your nonsense somewhere else.
ps. i would say a word if with every patch this game would be changing into something better. unfortunately it's not. it's one of many reasons why i am out of any players corp/alliance for over 2 years, buddy.

Oh please, you dont know what cccp was? this is cccp, mate. they rule and we cant do !@#$ (even thou we are customers)
and why do i post in this thread? to let poor customers know that there is a way to fight this money greedy corporation. cccp these days is nothing to compared to cccp from, lets say 2004. now they are COMPLETELY money oriented. they dont give a damn what players want or need...
hence CCCP!
get lost.
