Hi all,
question from a relative noobie.
What shield skills should I be looking at prioritising first, seems so many?
Mainly pve at the moment in a rifter but will be moving into mini cruisers in a while.
Thanks for your time.

Well depending on the slot layout of the cruiser you choose
Tactical shield manipulation I (allows use of V-M15 Braced Multispectral shield Matrix) Plus enemy specific hardeners for certain missions Shield operation III (allows use of medium tech 2 shield booster) Shield upgrades I (allows you to use medium shield extenders)
These should work well on your starting Cruiser upgrade to tech 2 or best named version when you can squeeze in the training. Most level 2's you should be able to Buffer tank. which is when you absorb the damage and once the mission is complete your shield recharges when you dock.
Use hardeners and extenders to buffer, same can be done with armor, but armor costs you isk if you don't rep it yourself.

Another suggestion is not to linger in the cruiser class for too long, get yourself into a battlecruiser to breeze through level 2's and jump into level 3's.

Edited by: Skygni on 03/02/2011 17:25:09 Thanks. I'll start working on those straight away.
Nice to know roughly what to aim for.

An end goal is always a good idea as well because if you train all shield skills and then jump into an armor tanking Battleship to run level 4 missions you'll be handicaping your ability to make isk early on.
Have a look at the Maelstrom as you level 4 mission runner if Projectiles are your primary weaponry it also has a shield tanking bonus.
If your main focus of this character is running missions than you'll likely want to end up in a Marauder and cherry pick loot as you run the mission, you should spend lots of time reading the on going debates in the mission & complex forum as well as the ships & modules forum lots of useful information in there.

Yes jump into a Hurricane if you can't afford a (fun!) Fleet Stabber!
Short answer: train them all to IV as they're mandatory for T2 shield modules, which you definitely want.

I would train the following to 4 Shield Compensation (less capacitor need for shield boosters) Shield Upgrades (required for tech 2 shield goodies) Tactical Shield Manipulation (tech 2 invulnerability fields + tech 2 damage-specific hardeners)
and then these to 5: Shield Operation (faster shield recharge rate, in a way it gives more buffer) Shield Management (more shield buffer)
in those orders
For active-tanking PVE, you can ignore the * Shield Compensation skills for now.
Don't forget your capacitor skills (Energy Management, Energy Systems Operation) which are a must-have if you plan on undocking! --- Join Lowball Heavy Industries. Small, focused fleets - lots of high intensity action, the EVE way. |
