It's called diversifying. It's something software companies do unless they want to die a horrible early death. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

op hit on a very good point, no matter how poorly articulated.
A console game needs to have a significant player base to make money. Remember, it is $50-$60 and then play for free. How much do you think the design team has cost CCP? Then marketing, launch and ongoing maintenance? It must be in the millions, easily.
For every $1M spent, they must sell 20,000 $50 copies. Lets say they spent $20M. They need to sell 400,000 copies.
I highly doubt a first time console game from a little unknown game producer - that has a history of putting out buggy product, btw - is going to sell 400,000 copies.
It is REALLY hard to make a hit game. REALLY hard. Most fail.
And remember, game sales peak within the first month or two, then drop off. It isn't like Eve where you can build a player base. I predict 50,000 - 100,000 active Dust players, tops. Figure 200,000 in sales. That is $10M in revenue. Think that is all they are spending?
So I am not so worried about them neglecting eve - I am more worried that this will be a huge financial flop and they'll need to sell the rights to EVE to a new owner to pay off whatever debt they took out to fund Dust.
Welcome microtransactions.

Is it even remotely reasonable to think that ccp could make a successful fps? An unexperienced developer of fps's competing with cod? Of course not, it's completely delusional.
It's an interesting question why ccp thinks it can do this, and, even more interesting, why the community accepts this idiocity as something that may work.
I just call bull****. CCP you're losing it. You're losing your sanity and your player base. I shouldn't care that much but apparently I do.
CCP get of your rock. Go hike a few months in Australia and then rethink what you're doing.
I'll bite the troll cause your logic is so flawed that someone actually can learn something from it.
God forbid a company ever diversify and God forbid that anyone ever tries out something new.
By your logic noone should ever go into new markets or compete with existing market leaders. It's a good thing most companies aren't lead by people likeminded you.

By your logic no one should enter the console field as they will be competing with already established companies.

At this point, I just wish CCP releases the Incarna crap at the next expansion cycle so we can finally go back to spaceship stuff.
On the other hand, "be careful for what you wish for" phrase surely applies to this, as we might get drowned in microtransaction hell and get nothing but clothing/emote updates.
Getting a weekend deal for 66% off of that leather jacket and hat set is not a moment I'm looking forward to.
This thread is now about microtransactions and how they will kill EVE.

COD? HAHAHAH. Isn't Cod a fish? Anyway. I would pay for all of my 3 accounts even if monthly fee was 20Ç. I love Eve and Eve loves me. I also love Eve-online. Dust is a bit different than adhd call of duty. First. theres a link to eve-online. Eve players / corps fund dust players to fight on planets. That alone takes Dust to whole new level from Cod of the more mindless bunnyhoproflmao counterstrike.
Second. Is it soooo bad if eve universe expands? Even that Blizzard makes bazillions everymonth with world of whatevercraft, they can't make a good game from it. (Yes, some simple minded people like it) Third. You get free expansions in eve. If you look back what eve was on it's first year and what it is today, would you say ccp has not been investing enough to it? Haven't done enough with it?
Oh and unexperienced developers have done hit games before!!! Blizzard did WoW(even it sucks but millions of players still) Valve did Half-Life and there are many other examples.
To be honest, it's not just programming that makes good games. it's the content desing. Any trained monkey these days can codeup a fps engine. making a good game from it need something else, creativity. Eve developers have more imagination and ballz than any call of duty/cs developer. Dust will rock, im sure of it! I think im gonna buy a xbox360 or PS3 just for it when it is released.

Yeah, no other game company out there makes more than one game at the same time and no company can break into an industry where there are already other companies. It must be impossible. They should give up now. If they don't the apocalypse will happen and the earth will implode into the fires of damnation. Lucky for me that will create lots of corpses for me to eat.

Edited by: Moore cyno on 04/02/2011 09:09:56 Edited by: Moore cyno on 04/02/2011 09:06:03 This topic always makes me laugh. CCP is a company, and as a company they must evolve or shut down. Having all their eggs in one basket (Eve online) is a huge liability and can eventually only lead to the end for CCP. Of course they are diversifying when they have the economic option to do so from revenue from Eve.
The issue about this topic that makes me laugh is that the op seems to believe that because he pays his monthly subscription fee, he should somehow be guaranteed that all the subscription fees should be put back into the game.
That is simply not true. Its like saying to Microsoft, I bought Windows 7, put all your revenues into patches or else!. Or for that matter to Blizzard, who has a real cash cow (i wont mention the name in an Eve thread, its kinda blasphemous), to stop developing Star craft or Diablo.
I have no interest in either Dust or World of Darkness. Still, im quite happy that CCP evolves even when the funding for that is coming from eve subscriptions. Do not elude yourself into believing that those funds would be put back into eve even if CCP didnt develop Dust and WOD, they would more likely be paid out in dividend.
And in terms of the development and funds put into Eve, id say CCP is second to none. It aint cheap running and upgrading the servers (not in any way comparable to sharded MMO's). Lots of patches and expansions are released, whether the recent ones have been successfull or not is another discussion but they are out there.
My only complaint is WIS, which i believe is progressing too slowly. Its been in the air for what 5 years, and noting resembling a release date yet. Well, i have my hopes for fan fest, i kinda suspect WIS is the reason for postponing fan fest, not the lame excuse of cheaper travel, well see :-).

I wasn't aware that spaceships would go away. Or are you just whining about hypothetical features that would have or not have been implemented otherwise?

Let's simplify this:
CCP has the right to develop any kind of product they want.

It's an opinion, and sure, I have hissyfits and quit from time to time but egh.
****ty as the game is I stay for the peoples.
Can I have you stuff? etc.
Oh and what does it matter, all FPS's are so genericly bland these days anyhow. No single player game, must focus on the multiplayer. Single player is just custscene - 5min walk - cutscene - repeat. Multiplayer is the same guns, the same grey\brown landscape. Sounds dull to me.
You know, no one wants to take a risk and make something that's actually different. Maybe CCP will luck in and set the prescedent for the next 5 years... it's unlikely but maybe.... --

I hope you realize ever since the Walking in stations, ambulation, incarna got in full speed development, amount of spaceship stuff we got has been considerably reduced. When compared to expansions like Red Moon Rising, Incursion is a joke.
It will only get worse as currently CCP's official standing about Incarna is releasing it BAREBONE, and adding features in future expansions. Which literally means they have to develop for 2 different games simultaneously. Which literally means less stuff for spaceships.
Wake up.

CCP with just Eve is a high risk for any investor, because its a volatile market, and a shift can mean that CCP will start to lose revenue. CCP with a more diversified product range is more attractive because of this. Think "single point of failure" that people have used with regard to various issues. CCP with more investment is good, as it will mean they can do more & better stuff.
"Competing with" is not the same as "selling more than". They may be aiming to beat games like COD, but they don't have to, and CCP are probably being realistic and not expecting it to. Is Eve competing with WOW? Yes, and it is successful, even though the subscriber base is smaller. As long as DUST covers it's development costs with a bit on top, CCP will probably consider it a success. WOD is an unknown at the moment, as we haven't heard any detail it whatsoever. All we can say is that CCP are splitting the development costs by using Carbon.

Agree.
I've been playing since 2004, and been very successful (still am according to current killboards). This has nothing to do with 'success,' and everything to do with what comes after one realizes that success is easy in this game.

I see it like this...
Two things can happen with eve and dust.
1. CCP is going to break into the Market like doomsday, and show the biggest epeen out there, with 2 games connected to each other, a First person shooter MMO if you want. It will give First person shooters finally something worth for shooting, and not just new skins and models at every expension like COD does.
2. CCP is going to break into the Market and pop... becouse noone is gonna be interrested in it, becouse it is too complicated, too much not known...
I hope for #1, this will fund EVE too and we wi'll command PPL on planets around
IF #2 happens.... i do not think EVE is going to suffer, CCP isn't that stupid to set such an successfull Project like EVE at risk for something new.
Short caluclation: 15 Ç / Month x 300.000 Accounts = 4,5 Mil Ç / Month income 4,5 Ç : 10 = 450.000 Ç / Month left to more or less spend on something like devloping DUST
PLEX buyage not taken into calculation.

Some people don't get what makes smart business sense, and probably never will. Others try to manipulate fellow players through fear and ignorance to try to get their way.
Always interesting to see both of those working together.

In a perfect world, where the sun was shining and the vampires were non-sparkly, CCP would divert resources to save the Fallout franchise from certain implosion as they develop their mmo. But alas, no... :(

Originally by: Professor Tarantula In a couple more years highschool kids will be making FPS games as part of their computer lab class. COD is hardly the pinnacle of difficult game development.
I do however question why they'd make it a console game and not a PC one. In particular, making it an x-box exclusive would be a grave error.

You are so right! Without any previous market experience they are sure to fail, no doubt about it!
As a prime example: I remember a couple of losers that founded a company back in 1997 because they wanted to create an MMO of their own named "Cosmos". They had no experience doing it, didn't have everything sorted, hardly had any money and had no idea just what they were getting into, but they started anyway. Can you imagine such a thing? An unexperienced developer competing with other game companies? What idiocity! It's totally delusional!
