I've no problems with CCP developing an EVE related shooter. What does concern me is how long Dust 514 will last as that will be determined by the lifespan of the console and as far as I'm concerned, the 360 is in it's final stages. PS3 might last a while longer though.
I just think CCP are leaving it a little late.

Is it even remotely reasonable to think that ccp could make a successful fps? An unexperienced developer of fps's competing with cod? Of course not, it's completely delusional.
It's an interesting question why ccp thinks it can do this, and, even more interesting, why the community accepts this idiocity as something that may work.
I just call bull****. CCP you're losing it. You're losing your sanity and your player base. I shouldn't care that much but apparently I do.
CCP get of your rock. Go hike a few months in Australia and then rethink what you're doing.
That is funny.
Do you stop buying a car just because the manufacturer invests the money he earns from to design some new car instead of improving the one you have?
Do you stop buying clothes because the manufacturer pockets in all the money he earns from you and doesn't give you goodies on the clothes you bought?
Do you stop buying games from other companies because they invest the money from you into different products?
Yeah ... thought so.
But you want to dictate CCP how they have to use their money? That is really too funny. |

Whats so great about cod, its just one game with seven sets of new graphics that people buy. It's release each year is like a circus event at a new town.

OP, you hit the nail on the head! Personally, I am horrified by the thought that some of the hard-earned money I spent on Warcraft 1 and 2 might actually have been used to fund some part of the development of WoW.
Eve won't last forever, and CCP needs to develop to be able to stay alive.

For one thing COD is a substandard form of gaming only appealing to brainless teenagers (or sometimes adults) with no standards at all. It lost it's charm after COD4. The only reason why recent COD games have done so well is because of Marketing. The game doesn't have to be good (which it isn't - Black Ops or Mw2) as long as its got a big budget set on marketing the actual product, it will sell! I've seen people sell Cable packages to Old people that don't even own televisions! You put enough effort into marketing and selling, the product could be anything - it will do well. I hope you know that the marketing budget of Modern Warfare 2 was more than the budget spent on the actual development of the game itself!
So please, don't compare CCP's fps game (which hasn't even come out yet) to COD (which isn't even worth the time for people that have intellect!)

OP is so right. After all, Ford Motor Company would be much bigger and more successful today if they had just abandoned all other models in 1958 and stuck to building Edsels. ________________________________________ Always choose the lesser of two weevils! |

Quote: ccp is losing it.
I'm completely new to EVE and CCP, I speak as an EVE noob but also as a long time and experienced gamer.
I upgraded my trial account to subscription a few days ago but that doesn't matter, it's easy to see even after this short time that CCP are doing a great job.
This is what I think of EVE and CCP so far.
1) Very solid platform. I've have had no problems running it on my moderate spec PC.
2) Solid network connectivity. Only problems I have had so far have been due to my connection dropping. Even then the game recovers without issue and even takes "emergency action" to make sure you stay safe in game.
3) Regular updates. I'm one of those weirdoes that actually reads the update change log, it's good to see the devs are tweaking and fixing even the smallest of bugs in order to make the platform the best it can be.
4) Excellent customer service. Just recently CCP decided to let everyone have another go at doing their new character portrait, because people (myself included) didn't realise that the changes made would be permanent. They didn't have to do this, in fact they are planning to release a feature in the near future (I read somewhere) where you can pay cash to re-do your portrait. The fact that they allowed everyone to do so without asking for any money speaks mountains about their ethics and stance towards being fair. I know of no other company that would have done this.
5) There is nothing else like this game on the market. Nothing comes even close.
6) Big plans for the future. BIG PLANS. Walkaround stations, cross platform planetside battles. CCP's vision is nothing short of epic.
CCP are not losing it, they are the ones to back all the way.

WTF man do you know how big CCP is as a company? I don't even run a company and can understand a company working on different projects. CCP knows exactly what their doing. Bacon..

Originally by: Calathea Sata I too sense that EVE is approaching the end of its product cycle. With what CCP is doing now it can only end up with a company trying to cover its losses and EVE will become a spaceship "retro mmo" that will be replaced by something else that is hopefully going to be less EVE than EVE.
IMO they're kind of bummed because they know EVE is a niche game and will never have the revenue of half the cash cows out there unless they invest in different markets.
I don't care one bit about Dust; WoD might be OK if it ever actually gets made but they're taking their sweet time about that
I do think CCP are making a big mistake in making Dust console exclusive, but I wouldn't play it anyways.
love your new portrait btw :)

For you idiots to understnad what I'm saying one has to understand what is going on atm in ccp. I need to make this explicit since you all are too dumb to see this. You see, ccp is losing it (see topic). They are not the group of kids that started eve. They are people who are funded by people who have opinions based on financial gains. It's that simple. There is no room for passion in eve anymore. And when passion is gone and greed takes over, idiotic things happen, like a indie sincere dev trying to create his vision transforming into something perverse that tries to make a fps

Who thinks CCP is trying to build a game that competes with Call or Duty or Battlefield? Try expanding your view of a FPS. Maybe you'll get close. I doubt it.
Of course this is why FPSes are rather dry and predictable. Let's hope that narrow thinking doesn't consume dust. Dust? Dune? 514? Whatever it's going to be called.
EDIT: Is Enriana just a bitter vet or ex-CCP dev?

What if their idea of a FPS goes beyond a 32 person, repetitive fixed environment? There is supposed to be some kind of link between Eve and Dust. That sounds kind of cool...and DIFFERENT. What great potential! I hope they pull it off. The world doesn't need another CoD, and you're right...they should not try to make a CoD. That would be folly.

Enriana,
Your post saddens me. You criticize CCP for trying something "new" and venturing into unfamiliar territory. Perhaps you are overlooking that Eve was a venture into new territory and a success were many others failed.
Your suggestions are unrealistic from both a consumer standpoint and a business one. I am certain many thought Halo would remain the most popular console fps until Modern Warfare arrived. Who are we to say Dust will fail?
Where would we be if companies didn't take chances to do things new and different. Hey Valve don't make Half-life its too different (crouch jumping to get to new areas.... blasphemy). Infinity Ward don't try Modern Warfare stick to WW2 you will fail.
To each their own OP.
Imagine if no one tried anything new... scary thought. *Cheers* CCP keep on dreaming big.

Edited by: Steve Thomas on 05/02/2011 06:17:29 Theres a problem with Diversifying, all too often it does not work. in fact the reality is that apart from just owning a "basket" of stocks Diversifying has proven to be a general failure for most companies.
Sony "Diversified" into sutch ventures as Movies Music Comertial Aircraft Construction, shipbuilding, Vidio games (especialy SOE who has brought us the games that turned into also rans and never realy were sutch as EQ, EQ2, SWG and its glorious NGE, and finaly DC online(that only goes to show that with pure bull headed stuborness, mooching off of otehrs successes, and the right licence you can eventualy make it!)
SOE has been running as a tax writeoff for them for the past 3 years. there Aircraft divsison was bascialy given to another company at a net loss of 750 million USD. Sony Payed 1.105 Billion USD to buy and build a "modern" shipbuilding facility, only to more or less sell it to Toyota, who payed Sony 10 Million Yen for it. yes YEN, then tore out most of it to make space for a parking lot and Facility for its RoRo Car carrier ships.
Microsoft has invested in so many failed startups that you soon realise that they could have saved themselves a fortune in researching/investigating thoes companies if they had just flown around chucking money out of the back of an airplane or hireing people to sit in an office pretending to do serious work. . . . oh, right, I have Windows Vista, they already did that.
As for CCP there making vidio games, and while I agree its sometimes frustrating to pay money to a company thats spending it to aparently do anything but work on what you just payed them to work on. . . its kind of understandable. .end of line.

Who cares of what they do in their different dep's? - I don't! It's their problem to manage their projects.
All I ask in this game is that my hybrids and ships using them, to get rid of all drawbacks cumulated by the buff of other races and nerf of vital items for gallente ships. All i ask is that they take a serious look in to, for all the rest I don't care!! It's not my problem neither yours but theirs, because if tomorrow I, you or whoever don't like anymore what Eve becomes just goes give their money to someone else.
