Okay here we go. As the title already states I need a new CPU and of course a fitting board. I initially intended to go for a sandy bridge. i5-2500K to be exact. Anyhow, since the P67 Chips have a faulty SATA2 controller it's getting a pretty hard pain in the ass to get a board. Unfortunately I need that new computer fast since the old one pretty much had it. So waiting a few months for new P67 boards is not an option. But I can't really decide too chose any CPU/Board combo. Guess that's what happens when you have to settle for some ôsub-optimalö setup. The price should not go above what the sandy bridge and the P8P67 Pro would cost (about 350 EUR -/+ 10). I got a few ideas and need some opinions so here we go:
Option A: Settle for a nice AMD rig with a Phenom II X6 1090T BE at it's core
Option B: Go for an ôoldö i5-760.
Now the question is: what is the better way to go and any recommendations for what board to chose (should include SATA3, USB3 would be nice but isn't absolutely necessary)?
The new rig will be used primarily for gaming and media center usage. What I got so far lying here:
8 GB of DDR-1333 RAM's
GeForce GTX 560 (yeah I know AMD cards have better performance per buck ratios but I don't like them for various reasons)
more than suitable power supply, hard drives and all the other stuff that's not really important in this discussion. ----------------------------- OMG THE SKY IS FALLING! Contract me all your stuff so I can save it! |

Well the 'old' i5-760\750 can be overclocked to 4ghz with a beefy heatsinkfan.

This Works wonders with a GTX 560 and comes pre oc'd.
But its a uk company and you haven't specified your location.

All "6 - Series" chipsets have been recalled due to an issue with the SATA2 controller. It includes basically any sandy bridge chipset and the C200 of whatever it is called made for server side use in conjunction with the new Xeons.

Location is Germany but as long as the company sells from within the EU it shouldn't be a problem to get stuff here without too much hastle / extra costs. At least compared to US imports.
Although that's a nice set it's a bit out of my target range price wise. Plus if it's already overclocked they take all the fun out of it :P ----------------------------- OMG THE SKY IS FALLING! Contract me all your stuff so I can save it! |

I've just recently bought myself a Phenom 965. Does everything I want it to and I can see it lasting me years. (Well, as long as the specs for EVE don't change dramatically)
I'm sticking with AMD for my processors, more bang per buck for my price range. Video card wise, currently got a 5750 but I'm thinking of going nvidia once Incarna hits.

for games... intel, faster clock for clock than amd... for rendering off your choices amd would score close to the i5...
Intel beats amd clock for clock, and if you can wait for sandy bridge that just blows away everything...
Also amd vid cards... kinda fail in the driver area so keep that in mind, they like to downclock to 2d clocks while 3d apps are open (read game).
