I have to agree. There's something going on with the macros. High min and ice prices indicate something has changed.

heh the massive spike in volume a couple days ago on the graph might have more to do with it than any conspiracy theory ;)
By speculate, did you mean "speculate as to what it is happening" or speculate as in "buy it up to wait for profit" ? Because the second kind of speculate only works if people buy BEFORE it hits the 3.2 or whatever price it will be :D

I mean "speculate as to why". Just trying to generate some conversation in here. MD has been pretty slow lately and I'm bored at work.

lol ok. Yeah it has been a bit .. Price dropped down again pretty quick, so was basically just someone buying a big chunk and then a quick shortage in supply I guess? Trit will go up in time, one of those yearly cycle things I think. I've not watched mineral market too heavily over the years though so I can't be 100%

Found the cause. It's the Chinese New Year. The actual day is February 3, but according to this site, the official holiday period is February 2-8.

Someone didn't realize that if they put up an order for a zillion trit @ 2.8, it would fill almost as fast as cleaning out sell orders?

I just want to point out the multiple - three confirmed, possibly two more - orders that are or were originally 2147483648 units in size (that's 2^31 or the maximum size an order can possibly be) that have been moving around. When trit was on an upswing, they moved up, now that it is (at the time of this post) on more of a downswing, they moved down.
Scrolling through the prices reveals at least one, possibly three similar orders sell side and at least two, possibly three more buy side.
In other words, I kinda suspect someone is swinging their **** around.

Trit prices spiking? No, I dont understand trends and I havent followed the trit prices the last month...
I sold out for 2.90+ yesterday. Was planning to wait for the 3.0+ but no reason to be greedy.

Several reasons:
1. CCPs stance against mining botters 2. Incursions kill a lot of ships. 3. Supercap production is going completely through the roof soaking up a lot of minerals. 4. New PVE content distracts people and makes miner try other things as well. 5. Inflation tendencies, QEN showed that there is a lot more isk injected into system than removed.
Get your trit now. It might go as high as 4.0 over the course of the next weeks.

Anyone want to place bets? I predict that trit drops over the next week (2.2 is my target) rather than rises.

Where there is profit there will be exploitation.
Botting isn't fun, it's profitable for the *explicit*... so yes.

Ok, I was wrong. Big manipulation up to 3.2 (bid price) so far. I think it will crash hard after Hulkageddon ends though. The fundamentals haven't changed, demand probably has slowed some and supply should start to recover in late February, assuming it hasn't already.
Now why do I think it's a manipulation? Way too many max buy orders from a single buyer for trit in Jita and the price jumps by several tenths at a time. I see no similar jumping pattern for pye or mex.

It is not only trit which is getting expensive.
Also Pyerite jumped up quite a lot. What will be next?

Honestly, I don't think so. Looking at the Uemon battle, that's somewhere around 70 billion trit (apparently, 14 titans and 5 SC). The surge in trit price precedes the Uemon mess plus the trading so far would probably be enough to cover losses. Further, supercaps aren't spur of the moment purchases. Titans take more than a month to build, supercarriers half the time. Moving that much trit and pye from high sec to a distant location in 0.0 is going to be pretty hard even with titan logistics to help. You also need to consider that 0.0 alliances have their own access to local minerals.

Edited by: Ave Volta on 16/02/2011 00:32:29 Yeah I would have to agree that mineral purchases for titans are probably typically not initiated by losses. Rather they are probably pipelined as capital and logistics for the build effort become available.
That's speculation on my part but I have a hard time seeing an alliance, that as it watches it's titan burn, goes: 'OMG Buy Trit now!'
Although alliances looking to replace titans will help keep prices up over the longer term.
